Beautiful hotel, we slept on 7th floor lake view room, very nice view, comfortable bed next to the street, the sound of the horn, the car was so loud, the water was not warm, the air was not cold at all. Breakfast is good. I like to walk across the street, not to 50 meters, it is a garden. A lot of food Walk to see the view.

I am very satisfied. The check-in process is fast, the hotel clerk is very friendly, responsive to help starting from internet access, helping with presentation equipment, to helping finding a taxi. In the clean room there are also Qibla directions. There is a vegetarian menu as a halal food option besides seafood. The location is also easily accessible, the location is in front of the city park & jogging track. Recommended.

More about hotels in Yangon

About Yangon accommodation

Thinking about a Yangon getaway? Myanmar's biggest city and former capital packs in golden pagodas, buzzing night markets and some seriously good value accommodation, no worries about blowing the budget here. Whether you're after colonial architecture downtown or a quiet leafy street near Inya Lake, Yangon accommodation covers everything from backpacker guesthouses to five-star towers.

Traveloka makes it easy to compare Yangon hotels by neighbourhood, price and traveller rating, so you can lock in your stay before you've even packed your bags. Here's the lowdown on where to stay, what things cost and what makes this city tick.

Where to stay in Yangon

  • Downtown Yangon: Colonial-era streets and the Sule Pagoda roundabout, with easy access to Chinatown's night market and everything from budget stays to smart hotels.
  • Bahan & Golden Valley: Leafy, upmarket streets close to Shwedagon Pagoda, popular with families and travellers after a quieter base.
  • Sanchaung: A walkable, cafe-loving pocket between downtown and Inya Lake, good for travellers keen on local character without the hustle.
  • Inya Lake area: Lakeside hotels with resort-style grounds, a peaceful alternative to the CBD with an easy taxi or Grab ride into the centre.

How much is Yangon accommodation?

  • Budget: AU$30-55, simple guesthouses and hostels with fan or basic air-con rooms, often around downtown or Chinatown.
  • Mid-range: AU$70-120, comfortable three to four-star hotels with pools, breakfast included and central locations.
  • Luxury: AU$150-260, five-star towers and colonial icons with full-service spas, lake or city views and top-notch dining.

What Yangon is known for

  • Shwedagon Pagoda: A 99-metre golden stupa set on a hilltop platform, especially striking at sunset when the gold catches the last light and the lanterns come on around it.
  • Yangon Circular Train: A slow three-hour loop around the city on a train that's barely changed since the 1950s, a cheap and easy way to see everyday neighbourhood life roll past.
  • Colonial-era downtown architecture: Grand old government buildings and the Sule Pagoda roundabout make for an easy self-guided wander through the CBD's British-era streetscape.
  • Mohinga and tea shop culture: Try Myanmar's national noodle soup for breakfast, then settle into a downtown tea shop the way the locals do, milky tea and slow people-watching included.

Top-rated hotels in Yangon

  • The Strand Yangon: A heritage hotel dating back to 1901, all colonial charm and old-world service right in downtown.
  • Pan Pacific Yangon: A slick high-rise with sweeping city views, several restaurants and one of downtown's better pools.
  • Sedona Hotel Yangon: A long-running favourite with spacious rooms, gardens and an easy walk to Kandawgyi Lake.
  • PARKROYAL Yangon: Central, reliable and well set up for both business and leisure stays.
  • Melia Yangon: Overlooking Inya Lake, with a quieter, leafier setting than downtown but still a short trip into the centre.

Travel tips for Yangon

  • Bring cash. Myanmar Kyat (MMK) is the main currency and cards aren't widely accepted outside hotels.
  • Dress modestly and take your shoes off before stepping onto pagoda platforms like Shwedagon.
  • Grab is the easiest way to get around Yangon's traffic without haggling over taxi fares.
  • Visit between November and February for cooler, drier weather, the most comfortable time to explore on foot.
  • Download an offline map before you head out, since data coverage can be patchy outside downtown.

Frequently Asked Questions about Accommodation in Yangon

Is it safe to travel to Myanmar right now?

This one's worth checking properly before you book. Head to Smartraveller, the Australian Government's official travel advice site, for the current advisory on Myanmar, and check again a few days before you fly since conditions can change quickly. Don't rely on general chat or old blog posts, go straight to the official source for the latest call.

Do Australians need a visa to visit Myanmar?

Yes, Australians need a visa. Myanmar doesn't offer visa-on-arrival for Aussie passport holders, but you can apply for an e-visa online before you go, it's around US$50 and typically allows a stay of up to 28 days. Visa rules can shift, so double-check the official Myanmar e-visa site closer to your trip.

How do I get to Yangon from Australia?

There's no direct flight from Australia to Yangon, so you'll be connecting through a hub like Singapore, Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur. A few major airlines run solid onward connections into Yangon International Airport from there. All up you're looking at somewhere between 12 and 18 hours travel time door to door, depending on your layover.

What's the best time of year to visit Yangon?

Yangon really has three seasons: cool and dry from November to February, hot and humid from March to May, and monsoon rains from June through October. If you want to dodge downpours and sightsee in comfort, the cooler months are your best bet, just expect bigger crowds and pricier rooms during that stretch too.

Is Yangon easy to get around, or do I need a car?

You don't need to hire a car. Outside the walkable downtown grid, Yangon's a spread-out city with heavy peak-hour traffic, and there's no metro system to lean on. Ride-hailing apps are the easiest way to cover ground without worrying about fares or directions, so between those and the Circular Train for a scenic loop, you're well covered.

Is Yangon good for families?

Yangon can work well for families, especially if your kids are into trains, temples and street food adventures. Footpaths can be uneven and pram-unfriendly in spots, and the heat and traffic take some managing, so a slower pace with air-con breaks works best. Look at family rooms around Bahan or Inya Lake for extra space and some green surrounds nearby.

Is English widely spoken in Yangon?

English is spoken at hotels, in tourist areas and by most guides, so getting around as a visitor is generally easy. It's less common once you're away from the main sights or dealing with everyday local shops, so a translation app or a few basic Burmese phrases go a long way for things like markets or taxi directions.

What currency is used in Yangon?

The local currency is the Myanmar Kyat, shown as MMK. You'll want small denomination notes for everyday spends like street food, taxis and market stalls, since getting change for larger bills isn't always easy. Currency exchange counters at the airport and around downtown Yangon are straightforward, just check the rate on offer before you commit.

Is Yangon touristy, or does it get relatively few Western tourists these days?

Compared to neighbours like Thailand or Vietnam, Yangon sees far fewer Western tourists these days, and overall international visitor numbers have dropped in recent years. That means quieter sights and a more low-key, less-touristy feel if you do visit, though it's worth factoring into planning around tour availability and the general travel experience on the ground.

Impressed with the hotel. Although it's not a 5 star hotel but feels good about everything. Beginning with the staff bringing Welcome Drink to a spacious room. Overlooking the Shwedagon pagoda The breakfast started. Happy parents.
