Location: Perfect. Because it's near Burnham Park, Good Taste restaurant, Foam Coffee, Harrison Street, Baguio Night Market, Session Road, Vizco's, Baguio Cathedral, sm baguio. Also, beside it, is a grocery store.💯. Food: Perfect. Because you can get as much as what you can consume. They served garlic rice, steamed rice, scrambled eggs, dried fish, hotdogs, pork steak, breads and jams, coffee, juice, salad and fruits.💯. Room: Good. Because I'm not sure if other parts of the room is clean. But definitely the bathroom needs to be scrubbed. The AC unit was loud from time to time. And, there's no room slippers provided. Also, they need to change their old towels, and their busted lights as well. Good thing their bed linens and comforters are clean. Staffs: Perfect. (Even if my request was not followed.) Front desk ladies were kind and accommodating. Every staff we see greets us politely.💯. Thank you, Hotel Veniz Burnham!

What to Eat and Where to Find It in Benguet

Benguet's culinary landscape is a delightful fusion of indigenous Cordilleran traditions and influences from its history as a popular retreat. A must-try is the "Pinikpikan," a traditional Ibaloi dish prepared by beating the chicken before cooking, resulting in a distinct flavour and tender texture. Another local specialty is "Strawberry Taho," a sweet, silken tofu dessert infused with strawberry syrup, a popular treat especially in Baguio City. For those seeking hearty meals, "Sinigang" (sour soup) and "Adobo" (stewed meat in soy sauce and vinegar) are Filipino staples found with local variations.

For an authentic taste of Benguet, exploring the local markets and food streets is essential. Baguio City's public market is a vibrant hub where you can find fresh produce, local delicacies, and affordable meals. Areas around Burnham Park and Camp John Hay also offer numerous dining options, ranging from casual eateries to more formal restaurants. For Muslim travellers, while specific Halal-certified restaurants might be limited, seeking out establishments that offer simple vegetable dishes, fish, or chicken prepared without pork is advisable, and communicating dietary needs clearly is key.

Dining in Benguet offers excellent value for international travellers. Street food and local eateries can provide delicious meals for as little as USD 2-5 per person. Mid-range restaurants typically charge between USD 8-15 per person for a full meal, while more upscale dining experiences might range from USD 20-30 or more. These prices are generally lower than what travellers from the US and Europe might expect, making Benguet an attractive destination for food enthusiasts on a budget.

When dining in Benguet, embracing local customs enhances the experience. Meal times are generally similar to Western schedules, with lunch around noon and dinner around 7 PM. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, with a 10% tip being customary. It's polite to wait for your host or the eldest person at the table to begin eating. Trying local dishes, even if unfamiliar, is encouraged, and expressing appreciation for the food is always well-received.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Benguet

Understanding local customs is key to a respectful and enjoyable visit to Benguet. Filipinos are generally known for their hospitality and politeness. It's customary to use "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or those in authority, signifying respect. When invited into someone's home, it's polite to bring a small gift. Public displays of affection are generally more subdued than in Western cultures. Being mindful of these nuances will foster positive interactions with the local community.

At popular sites like Burnham Park and Camp John Hay, maintaining a respectful demeanour is important. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites, though casual attire is acceptable for parks and general sightseeing. Photography is usually permitted, but it's always courteous to ask permission before taking close-up photos of individuals. Queuing is generally orderly, and patience is appreciated. Respecting the environment by not littering and staying on designated paths contributes to preserving these beautiful locations.

Benguet is generally a safe destination for tourists, but standard precautions should be taken. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like markets. For transportation, utilize reputable taxi services or ride-hailing apps like Grab, which are widely available in Baguio City. It's advisable to have offline maps downloaded on your phone, such as Google Maps or Maps.me, for navigation assistance, especially in areas with spotty mobile reception.

In case of emergencies, the local police can be reached at 911. For medical assistance, hospitals are available in Baguio City. While there might not be specific tourist police units, regular police are generally helpful. Travellers from the US, UK, India, and various African nations can find their respective embassies or consulates in Manila, the capital city. It is highly recommended to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and trip disruptions.

Getting to Benguet and Getting Around

Reaching Benguet from major international hubs involves flying into the Philippines' primary gateway, Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila. For travellers from the United States (e.g., JFK, LAX, IAD, ORD), flights typically connect through major Asian hubs like Seoul, Tokyo, or Hong Kong, with a total journey time of around 20-25 hours. European travellers (e.g., LHR, FRA, AMS, CDG) will find similar routes, with flight durations averaging 18-23 hours.

Indian travellers (e.g., BOM, DEL, BLR, MAA) can expect journeys of approximately 15-20 hours, often with one stop. For those travelling from Africa (e.g., NBO, LOS, JNB, ADD), flights will likely involve multiple connections, extending the travel time to 25-35 hours or more. From Manila, travellers can then take a bus or arrange a private transfer to Benguet, a scenic journey of about 4-6 hours. It is recommended to book flight options well in advance for the best fares.

Once in Benguet, particularly in Baguio City, getting around is relatively straightforward. Jeepneys are the most common and economical form of public transport, serving various routes throughout the city and surrounding areas, with fares typically ranging from USD 0.20 to USD 0.50. Taxis are also readily available and metered, offering a more comfortable ride for approximately USD 1-3 for short distances. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are operational and provide a convenient way to book rides, with prices comparable to taxis. For exploring specific attractions like Burnham Park or Camp John Hay, walking is often feasible, or short taxi rides can be utilized.

The best time to visit Benguet is generally during the dry season, from November to May, when the weather is cooler and less prone to rain. This period coincides with peak tourist season, especially around Christmas and Holy Week, leading to higher hotel prices and larger crowds. For a more relaxed experience and potentially lower accommodation costs, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or February. The rainy season, from June to October, brings lush greenery but also frequent downpours, which can affect outdoor activities.

Visa Information

For travellers intending to visit Benguet, the primary entry point is the Philippines. Visa requirements vary significantly by nationality. US passport holders can typically enter the Philippines visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism and business purposes, provided they have a valid passport and proof of onward travel. European passport holders, including those from the UK, Germany, and France, generally enjoy similar visa-free entry privileges for stays up to 30 days.

Indian passport holders are also granted visa-free entry for stays of up to 30 days, provided they meet specific conditions such as holding a valid passport and proof of onward or return travel. For travellers from many African nations, including Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, a visa is typically required prior to arrival. It is crucial to verify the most current regulations with the Philippine embassy or consulate in their respective countries.

The process for obtaining a visa, where required, usually involves submitting an application form, a valid passport with sufficient remaining validity (typically at least six months beyond the intended stay), passport-sized photographs, and supporting documents. These may include proof of financial capacity, such as bank statements, an itinerary, hotel bookings, and a confirmed return or onward flight ticket. Some nationalities might be asked for additional documentation, such as an invitation letter from a host in the Philippines or a certificate of employment. It is essential to apply for visas well in advance of your travel dates to allow ample processing time.

While this information provides a general overview, immigration policies are subject to change. Therefore, it is imperative for all international travellers to confirm the latest visa requirements and entry regulations directly with the official immigration authority of the Philippines or the nearest Philippine embassy or consulate before making any travel arrangements.
