Hostal El Pilar

Excellent staff was very friendly and helpful. Great water pressure and plenty of hot water. Very clean and plenty of electrical outlets. Extra blankets were very helpful. It is right next to square where big easter parade ended, but we were shielded from outdoor noises. Location is incredible! We loved that. There were two drawbacks. The first was that we heard people walking on stairs quite frequently in middle of night. The second was the awkward bathroom. Toilet sits in tight area and you have to sit sideways. The sink has a shelf mounted right above it that prevents you from being able to easily wash your face or spit out toothpaste. And the shower is in a tight space with the hot/cold handle placed where it is very easy to bump and turn off, make it all cold, or make it all hot. All in all, the apartment is fine, but unless the bathroom was remodeled, we would opt to try a different hotel.

One of the staff was very rude because we were claiming the room that we pay in Expedia. At night there a lot of noise from the street

The staff were very welcoming and helpful. Check in was easy and we could store our luggage. We did have to buzz into the main building every time which was odd, but there was always someone to let us in. The room was small, but for a Hostal it was enough (considering we had our own bathroom in the room). It could be cleaner—the ceiling was peeling above our shower, the shower head was on the floor of the tub when we arrived, and the comforter and blankets did not seem to be as clean as the sheets. Overall, I would probably book again.

Great location, very clean, cordial staff. The room was lacking especially the very small bathroom and shower could not bend over to wash my lower body. Bathroom sink tiny and no mats to place outside of shower to prevent water on floor.

Very attentive staff, clean towels and sheets, kindly accommodate our luggage before checking in and after checking out.

Walkable and convenient Transportaion

The place is in a great location, the staff is amazing and the bedroom are ok for the price.

The rooms (at least for 3 people) are extremely small, with almost no room for 3 people's luggage, the bathrooms are extremely small and nothing like the photos posted on Expedia. If you have a rental car, I recommend careful coordination for parking. We didn't get one, nor did we get the hotel to help us with the issue of our car's license plate when driving through the center of Madrid, which has limitations and many hotels put it in the city system to exempt payment of the pollution tax. This hostel doesn't help with this issue either.

The place is in good location, they don't have ironing for clothes, you must to leave the key on the reception.

The property is a few steps away from Puerta del Sol, close to many of Madrid’s main attractions within walking distance, same as Sol’s Metro station. We stayed in two different rooms, they were quite small but clean and confortable. Since it’s in front of a busy street with bars and restaurants, it was a bit noisy to the point we woke up in the middle of the night once.

Room was exactly as advertised. Area around hotel can be noisy, but I knew that in advance, so no surprise. Clean. Staff was friendly, courteous and professional.

The hostal is located in old building with horrible odor inside. No ventilation , air conditioner does not work. We got the smallest room possible instead of double room for which we paid $195 for the first night. Concierge promised to give us another room next day, we stayed in that room for 4 days but never been moved to a room we paid for. The bed, pillow and bedding is in poor condition, one small chair. There is no breakfast, no iron, no hair dryer, no minim fridge, not even a lobby to sit in to do some work or have a coffee and meet up) plain just a bed and a bathroom that’s it. The electric outlet gives yellow sparkles when plugged or when the light needs to turn on/off. Overall unpleasant experience. The staff is not that friendly or compassionate. We wouldn’t stay there again. And I won’t recommend to stay there. it’s convenient as a location but not if you have a car. There are many different hostels around- give a try but do not fall for Hostal El Pilar
