Yangdong Village, Gyeongju
Yangdong Village in Gyeongju is the largest traditional village in Korea, preserving the traditional culture and beautiful nature of the Joseon Dynasty.
The entire village is designated as a cultural heritage site due to its numerous cultural assets, including treasures, national treasures, and folklore materials.
Many people visit this village to see its rich cultural heritage and beautiful surroundings, including King Charles III, who visited in 1993.
Gyeongju National Park
Gyeongju National Park, the only historical park in Korea, was designated as a national park in 1968, making it the second after Jirisan.
The park covers 136.55 square kilometers across eight districts, including Tohamsan Mountain, home to Bulguksa and Seokguram Grotto, and Namsan Mountain, known as an "open-air museum of Buddhism."
The park is beloved as an educational site for its well-preserved Silla cultural relics and harmonious natural landscapes.
It is also recognized globally as one of the world's top 10 heritage sites by UNESCO in 1979.
Bulguksa Temple
Bulguksa is a temple representing Buddhist culture during the Silla Dynasty.
Built during the reign of King Beopheung (514–540) to pray for peace and prosperity, the temple has undergone continuous restoration since the 1920s.
The temple currently holds seven national treasures and numerous important cultural assets.
In December 1995, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the nearby Seokguram Grotto.
Seokguram Grotto
Seokguram is a stone grotto built by Kim Daeseong during the reign of King Gyeongdeok (742–765) in the Silla Dynasty.
Located 3 kilometers by hiking trail or 9 kilometers by car from Bulguksa Temple, the grotto features a seated Buddha statue overlooking the East Sea, designed in perfect harmony with its surroundings.
It was preserved and registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on December 6, 1995.
Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond
Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond in Gyeongju were the secondary palace sites of the Silla Dynasty.
The palace, along with other subsidiary palaces, was used as a residence for the crown prince and hosted banquets for special occasions and important guests.
In the 1980s, fragments of pottery inscribed with "Wolji" were excavated, confirming that the area was originally called "Wolji," meaning "pond that reflects the moon."
The name Anapji was later changed back to Wolji.
Hwangnangwan Hanok Hotel
Hwangnangwan in Gyeongju is a small hanok village composed of four one-story hanoks and two two-story hanoks.
Each room is equipped with a bathroom, and the Nu Maru suite includes a bathtub for added convenience.
Poseokjeong Pavilion
Located on the western side of Namsan Mountain in Gyeongju, Poseokjeong Pavilion was part of a separate palace where the king enjoyed drinking.
According to the "Orchid Pavilion Preface" by Wang Xizhi in 353, clear stream water was made to flow in nine turns, with cups of wine floating along.
The rule was that if a person failed to compose a poem before the cup passed by all nine turns, they had to drink three penalty cups.
Cheomseongdae Observatory
Built during the reign of Queen Seondeok (r. 632–647), Cheomseongdae Observatory is one of the landmarks of Gyeongju.
The observatory is cylindrical, about 9 meters high, and constructed from 365 stones, symbolizing the days of the year.
The structure includes 27 layers of stones, representing the 27th ruler, Queen Seondeok, with an additional two layers symbolizing the lunar dates.
Hwangnyongsa Temple Site
Hwangnyongsa was a temple built during the 6th century in the Silla Dynasty.
Although it was burned down during the Mongol invasions in the 13th century, its remnants suggest it was an enormous temple, estimated to be eight times the size of Bulguksa, covering an area of 29,040 square meters.
