Tucked inside Penang National Park, Monkey Beach is reached either by a scenic (and sweaty) 45-minute jungle trek or a quick boat ride from Teluk Bahang jetty. True to its name, long-tailed macaques wander the shoreline, so keep food well out of sight. 

It's one of the liveliest beaches in the park, with a few food stalls and basic facilities, making it a good middle-ground between the wilder Turtle Beach and the crowds of Batu Ferringhi.

This is arguably the prettiest beach inside Penang National Park; a rare sandy strip split by a freshwater lagoon, with a turtle conservation centre right beside it. Sea turtles occasionally come ashore here to nest, and the on-site sanctuary is worth a quick look even though the tanks are modest. 

Bring plenty of water and sun protection, as it's a proper hike (or boat ride) to get here and shade is limited once you arrive.

Just five kilometres from Batu Ferringhi but noticeably calmer, Teluk Bahang is where fishing boats bob alongside sunbathers. It's the gateway to Penang National Park, so it's a handy base if you're planning a hike, and it's close to attractions like the Tropical Spice Garden and Penang Butterfly Farm. 

The seafood here, sold fresh from the nearby jetty, is a big draw for locals on weekends.

Not a swimming beach, but a much-loved seaside promenade that deserves a mention. Gurney Drive is where Penangites go for sunset strolls, cycling, and, above all, hawker food. The famous Gurney Drive Hawker Centre sits right along the waterfront, so you can watch the sun dip over the Straits of Malacca with a plate of char kway teow in hand. 

It's also walking distance from Gurney Plaza, handy if you want to combine beach views with a bit of shopping.

Located on the remote southwestern coast in Balik Pulau (Pulau Betong). Pasir Panjang is a quieter, more local beach that rarely sees big tourist crowds. It's a good option if you fancy watching planes take off in the distance while relaxing by the water, and it's close to some excellent seafood restaurants in Batu Maung. 

Not the prettiest sand in Penang, but a peaceful, low-key stop.

Down on the southwestern tip near Balik Pulau, Gertak Sanggul is known for postcard-worthy sunsets, framed by coconut palms and a view of Pulau Kendi just offshore. It's less developed than the north-coast beaches, which is exactly the appeal; fewer crowds, quieter shoreline, and excellent fresh seafood at nearby restaurants like Hai Boey. 

Go for the golden hour. The sunset here is genuinely one of the best on the island.

A short ferry ride from Penang Island, Jerejak Island has a colourful past as a former leper colony and prison, but today it's a laid-back escape with a rainbow-coloured jetty, a beachside swing, and forest trails. It's less about swimming and more about the atmosphere. 

This is the place you must visit if you search for Instagram-worthy photo spots and a slower pace than the mainland beaches. Great for a half-day trip if you want to say you've "island-hopped" in Penang.
