For Malaysians, Hokkaido has become a firm favourite alongside Tokyo and Osaka, with Sapporo as the main gateway city, followed by Otaru for its canal views, Furano and Biei for flower fields, Hakodate for night views and seafood, and Niseko for ski resorts.

Before diving into the details, here's a quick snapshot of what each season feels like temperature-wise, so you can jump straight to the section that matters most to you.

Winter (December–February): -7°C to -1°C, heavy snowfall, ski season, Sapporo Snow Festival.

Spring (March–May): 0°C to 17°C, cherry blossoms bloom late (early May), fewer crowds.

Weather: Bitterly cold, ranging from -7°C at night to around -1°C in the day. Snow blankets the entire island, and Niseko in particular is famous for some of the driest, fluffiest powder snow in the world.

Best places and events to enjoy: The Sapporo Snow Festival (early February) at Odori Park is the star attraction, with massive ice sculptures and light installations. Niseko and Furano are prime for skiing and snowboarding, while Otaru's canal looks magical dusted in snow. Sounkyo Onsen also runs its own ice festival.

Cost: This is peak season, so flights and hotels (especially in Niseko) are at their priciest. Book at least 3–4 months ahead if travelling in February.

Weather: Cold at the start of March (around 0°C) but warms up nicely by May, reaching highs of 8–17°C. Snow lingers into April in some areas.

Best places and events to enjoy: Cherry blossoms typically bloom in late April to early May in Hokkaido, much later than mainland Japan. Matsumae Park and Maruyama Park in Sapporo are popular sakura spots. Late spring is also a great time to explore Hokkaido University's leafy campus and Lake Toya before the summer rush.

Cost: Mid-range. Prices are lower than winter and summer, making this a good budget-friendly window, though Golden Week (late April to early May) sees a spike due to domestic Japanese travellers.

Weather: Pleasant and mild, averaging 17°C to 25°C, with far less humidity than the rest of Japan. Unlike Honshu, Hokkaido skips the rainy season almost entirely.

Best places and events to enjoy: Furano and Biei's lavender fields peak in the first two weeks of July,  go early before the heat and crowds set in. The Sapporo Summer Festival and beer garden season at Odori Park run through July and August, and Lake Toya hosts a nightly fireworks display from late April through October.

Cost: This is peak season alongside winter, so expect higher flight and hotel prices, particularly around the July lavender bloom and August school holidays.

Weather: Starts mild around 18°C in September and drops steadily to near 0°C by late November, with the first snow sometimes appearing before the month ends.

Best places and events to enjoy: Daisetsuzan National Park sees Japan's earliest autumn colours, often from early September. Jozankei Onsen and Sapporo's Hokkaido University ginkgo avenue are gorgeous by mid-to-late October. Don't miss the Sapporo Autumn Fest in September, a month-long food festival showcasing Hokkaido's seafood, corn, and dairy.

Cost: Generally the most affordable season to visit, with fewer crowds and better hotel rates, aside from a small bump during autumn foliage peak in mid-October.

If you can only make one trip, most first-timers get the best all-round value from late June to mid-July (lavender fields, comfortable weather, long daylight hours) or early February (snow festival season, full winter wonderland experience). Getting to Hokkaido from Malaysia is more straightforward than most people expect, with a mix of direct and one-stop options landing at New Chitose Airport (CTS), Sapporo's main gateway.

Validity: The visa exemption applies as long as your Malaysian passport is a biometric, ICAO-compliant passport (which all Malaysian passports issued today are).

Length of Stay: Up to 90 days per visit for tourism, business meetings, transit, or visiting friends and family.

Requirements: A valid Malaysian passport, a return or onward flight ticket, and proof of accommodation or a planned itinerary. Registering on the Visit Japan Web platform beforehand is optional but speeds up arrival immigration and customs.

Processing Time: None needed. There's no application process at all. Just show up with your passport and travel documents at immigration.
