India Is Always Calling, But When Should You Actually Go? A Malaysian's Seasonal Guide

India is a favourite destination for many Malaysians. It's affordable, easy to reach, and packed with incredible places to explore. From the Himalayas to tropical beaches, every region offers something different.

The best time to visit depends on where you're going. India's weather varies greatly across the country, and each season brings a different experience. This guide covers what to expect throughout the year, including the weather, highlights, and the best time to plan your trip.

India's Climate, The Big Picture

India has three broad seasons: a dry, cooler winter (roughly October to February), a scorching pre-monsoon summer (March to May), and a monsoon season (June to September) that sweeps in from the southwest.

The northern and southern regions experience these differently, the south stays warmer year-round, while the north sees genuinely cold winters and fierce summers. The Himalayan belt has its own alpine patterns entirely.

Best Time to Visit India, Season by Season

1. Winter (October-February): Best for Most of India

Weather: Cool and dry across most of the country. North India ranges from a pleasant 15-25°C in October and November, dipping to 5-15°C in December and January. South India stays warmer, typically 22-30°C throughout.

Best places and things to enjoy: This is India's golden travel season. Rajasthan's fort cities: Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, are at their most comfortable. The Taj Mahal and the Golden Triangle circuit (Delhi-Agra-Jaipur) are best done now. Kerala's backwaters and Goa's beaches are in full swing, and the Rann of Kutch's famous white salt desert festival, the Rann Utsav, runs from November through February.

Cost: Peak pricing, especially December and January. Book flights and accommodation early if you're travelling over the school holiday window.

2. Summer (March-May): Best for Hill Stations

Weather: Hot to extremely hot across the plains, Delhi and Rajasthan regularly see 38-45°C from April onwards. Hill stations like Shimla, Manali, Darjeeling, and Ooty offer a genuine escape, staying in the comfortable 15-22°C range.

Best places and things to enjoy: If you're set on travelling during summer, head for the hills. Shimla and Manali in Himachal Pradesh are classic retreats. Darjeeling's tea estates are beautiful in the lead-up to monsoon, and Ooty in Tamil Nadu is a much cooler alternative to the baking south. Kerala's Munnar hill station is another excellent option before the rains arrive.

Cost: Generally lower prices on the plains (for obvious reasons), but hill stations see a summer surge as domestic tourists escape the heat. Book hill station accommodation well ahead.

3. Monsoon (June-September): Best for Lush Landscapes and Budget Travel

Weather: Heavy to very heavy rainfall across most of India, with humidity rising sharply. Temperatures ease slightly compared to pre-monsoon but the dampness can be intense. The northeast receives some of the heaviest rainfall on the planet during this window.

Best places and things to enjoy: Kerala transforms into a lush, intensely green version of itself during the monsoon. It's actually a popular time for Ayurvedic retreats, which are said to be most effective in the rainy season. The Western Ghats are stunning. Rajasthan becomes quieter and more atmospheric, and a handful of rain-shadow regions like Ladakh and Spiti Valley in the Himalayas are actually at their most accessible now.

Cost: The lowest rates of the year across flights and hotels in most of India. Excellent value for travellers comfortable with occasional downpours.

4. Post-Monsoon / Shoulder Season (October-November): Best Overall Balance

Weather: Skies clear, the land is still green from the rains, and temperatures drop to a very manageable 20-28°C across most of India. This is arguably the single best stretch of the year.

Best places and things to enjoy: Everything is open and looking its best. Rajasthan's palaces, Delhi's Mughal monuments, the backwaters of Kerala, the temples of Tamil Nadu, all excellent. Diwali (typically falling in October or November) is one of the most spectacular cultural experiences in the country if you happen to be in the right city.

Cost: Shoulder pricing, better value than peak winter, but rising steadily through November as the crowds return.

Absolute Best Time to Visit India (If You Only Go Once)

For a first-time Malaysian visitor, October to February is the window to aim for, with October-November offering the best balance of great weather, lower prices than peak December-January, and a country that's still lush and vibrant from the monsoon. If your primary goal is Rajasthan, the Golden Triangle, or any north Indian destination, do not go between April and August, the heat and rain will limit what you can comfortably do and see.

Flights from Malaysia to India

Malaysia has excellent air connectivity to India, with direct flights from Kuala Lumpur (KLIA and klia2) to major Indian cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, and Batik Air Malaysia all operate routes across this corridor, with flight times ranging from roughly 4 hours (to Chennai or Kochi) to around 5 hours 40 minutes (to Delhi or Mumbai).

Fares tend to dip between June and August (monsoon season) when demand from leisure travellers drops, making it a good window for budget-conscious Malaysians comfortable with the rain. December through January sees the highest fares. Booking 4-6 weeks ahead generally yields better rates than last-minute bookings on this route.

Visa and Entry Requirements for Malaysians

Malaysian passport holders can apply for an Indian e-Visa (eTV: electronic Tourist Visa) online through India's official Bureau of Immigration portal, without needing to visit a consulate. The e-Visa is available in 30-day, 1-year, and 5-year validity options, allows double or multiple entries depending on the type, and permits stays of up to 90 days per visit for tourism purposes.

Processing usually takes 3-5 business days, though it's advisable to apply at least one to two weeks before your travel date, particularly during busy periods. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended travel dates, and apply only through the official Indian government portal (indianvisaonline.gov.in) to avoid third-party service fees.
