Italy runs on four distinct seasons, and the temperature swing between north and south (plus coast versus inland) can be significant. Here's the quick version before we dig into the details below.

Spring (March–May): 10°C–22°C. Mild temperatures, blooming landscapes, and fewer crowds make spring one of the best times for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

Summer (June–August): 22°C–35°C. Expect hot, sunny days and peak tourist crowds, especially in popular cities and coastal destinations.

Autumn (September–November): 12°C–24°C. Cooler weather, colourful scenery, and fewer visitors create ideal conditions for exploring cities and the countryside.

Winter (December–February): 0°C–13°C. Winters are cold in northern Italy, with snow in the Alps, while southern regions remain relatively mild and less crowded.

Here's how each part of the year stacks up, so you can match the season to your travel style and budget.

Weather: Mild and pleasant, ranging from a cool 10°C in early March to a warm 22°C by late May. Rain is more frequent in March and April, so pack a light jacket.

Best places and events to enjoy: Rome's gardens and piazzas come alive, Tuscany's countryside turns green with vineyards budding, and Florence hosts the Scoppio del Carro (Explosion of the Cart) at Easter. Venice is far less crowded than in summer, making gondola rides more relaxing.

Cost: Moderate. Flights and hotels sit between low and peak season rates, a good middle ground for value.

Weather: Hot and dry, especially in central and southern Italy, with temperatures regularly hitting 30–35°C. Coastal breezes offer some relief; northern cities like Milan can feel muggy.

Cost: Moderate to low, particularly from late October onwards, as tourist numbers start to thin.

Weather: Cold, especially in the north, where temperatures can dip close to 0°C, with occasional snow in Milan and the Alps. Southern Italy and Rome stay milder, hovering around 8°C–13°C.

Best places and events to enjoy: Rome and Milan's Christmas markets, New Year's Eve celebrations in major piazzas, and February's Venice Carnival with its iconic masks are winter highlights. Ski resorts in the Dolomites also open for the season.

Cost: Lowest of the year (excluding the Christmas/New Year peak), making it the best time for budget-conscious travellers.

If you're only planning one trip and want the best of everything; — good weather, manageable crowds, and reasonable prices; aim for late April to early June, or September to mid-October. You'll get comfortable sightseeing weather without summer's heat and crowds, plus better hotel rates than peak season.

Malaysians do not need a visa to visit Italy for short trips. As part of the Schengen Area, Italy allows visa-free entry for Malaysian passport holders, though a new online travel authorisation is being introduced later in 2026.

Cost: Currently free for visa-exempt entry, though a new online travel authorisation is expected to be introduced in the near future. Once the new ETIAS travel authorisation launches, it will cost €20 (roughly RM 93, depending on daily market rate) per applicant.

Validity: ETIAS, once required, will be valid for 3 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, covering all 30 Schengen countries.

Length of Stay: Up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period, shared across the entire Schengen Area (not per country).

Requirements: A passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure date, proof of sufficient funds (a rough guide is around €100 per day), a return or onward ticket, and travel insurance is strongly recommended. Once mandatory, ETIAS will require a valid passport, an email address, and a debit or credit card for the online application.

Processing Time: No processing needed for visa-free entry today. Once ETIAS launches, most applications are approved within minutes, though some may take up to 96 hours.

Finding halal food in Italy takes a bit of planning, but it's far from impossible, especially in the bigger cities where Muslim-friendly options cluster near major attractions.

If you in Rome, Peri Peri Halal Grill is just a short walk from the Trevi Fountain, serves grilled chicken, biryani, and other halal favourites, while La Via Della Seta near the historic centre is known for its Syrian dishes, including falafel and hummus. 

Milan offers the widest selection of halal dining, particularly around Via Padova and Porta Venezia, where you'll find Lebanese, Egyptian, Pakistani, and other Middle Eastern restaurants. In Florence, halal options are fewer, but Istanbul Doner Kebap near the Duomo is a convenient choice for a quick meal between sightseeing. 

Venice has the most limited halal food scene, with a handful of kebab shops in the Cannaregio district, while nearby Mestre on the mainland offers a greater variety of halal restaurants and butchers. 

Pro tip: pizza margherita, seafood pasta, and gelato are generally halal-friendly (pork and alcohol-free) if you're ever stuck without a dedicated halal restaurant nearby.
