For many travellers, Flores Island first appears on the itinerary because of one famous resident, the Komodo dragon. But stopping at Komodo National Park means seeing only one chapter of what this long, mountainous island has to offer.

Flores stretches across East Nusa Tenggara, with Labuan Bajo in the west and Maumere in the east. Between them are volcanic highlands, traditional villages, coffee-growing regions, dramatic coastlines, and communities with distinct cultural traditions.

Flores is one of the major islands of East Nusa Tenggara (Nusa Tenggara Timur) in eastern Indonesia. Labuan Bajo sits at the western end and has become the island's best-known tourism gateway, while Maumere serves as an important hub in the east.

For most international travellers, flying is the easiest option.

You can fly from Bali to Labuan Bajo, with the journey taking around an hour. There are also connections to Flores through other Indonesian cities, while Maumere's Frans Seda Airport is useful if you're exploring the eastern side of the island.

The highlands around Manggarai and Bajawa offer cooler air, green hills, coffee-growing areas, and traditional villages. One of the most distinctive experiences is Wae Rebo, a remote village around 1,100 metres above sea level, surrounded by mountains and Todo Forest.

Getting there requires a trek, but the reward is the sight of the village's distinctive Mbaru Niang cone-shaped houses and the opportunity to experience Manggarai traditions at a much slower pace.

If you continue east towards Ende and Maumere, the experience becomes less focused on the Komodo circuit and more about Flores itself.

The highlight here is Kelimutu, famous for its three crater lakes whose colours can change over time due to changes in the lakes' volcanic chemistry. The eastern part of Flores is also known for coastal scenery, diving, and smaller communities that see fewer international visitors.

Rather than rushing through a long checklist, pick experiences that match the kind of holiday you want.

The Komodo dragon is naturally the headline attraction. Komodo National Park protects the species and its surrounding ecosystems, including the islands of Komodo, Rinca and Padar.

Visitors aren't permitted to explore the park independently. Official park guidance requires visitors to use authorised guiding services because Komodo dragons live across the main islands in the park.

Padar's viewpoint is one of the most recognisable landscapes in the region, where steep hills overlook three sweeping bays.

The climb is relatively short compared with a mountain trek, but the exposed terrain can be hot. Start early, bring water, and don't underestimate the sun.

The reward is one of those views that instantly explains why western Flores has become so popular.

Kelimutu offers an entirely different side of Flores from the tropical islands around Labuan Bajo.

Its three crater lakes sit side by side near the summit, with their colours changing over time. A sunrise visit is particularly popular because the early light and mist create an atmospheric setting around the volcanic landscape.

If Kelimutu is on your wish list, don't treat it as a quick day trip from Labuan Bajo. It is on the opposite side of Flores, and the journey across the island deserves its own itinerary.

Wae Rebo is worth considering as an experience rather than just a sightseeing stop.

The village's seven Mbaru Niang houses sit high in the mountains, surrounded by forest. Visitors can learn about local customs, see traditional weaving and coffee production, and, if arranged, stay overnight in the traditional houses.

The village has limited mobile coverage and electricity availability, making it a natural opportunity for a digital detox.

Food is an easy way to experience the differences between regions of Flores.

Coffee is particularly significant in the highlands, including around Wae Rebo, where local communities grow and traditionally process coffee.
