Johor Island Travel Guide: How to Get There, Things to Do, and Where to Stay

Johor's islands offer an easy change of scenery when you need a break from the city. Head towards Mersing and you'll find sandy beaches, clear waters, and small island resorts just off the coast.

The journey is also fairly straightforward. Most islands can be reached by boat from Mersing, with some crossings taking less than an hour. That makes them a practical choice for a short getaway from Johor Bahru or Singapore.

Planning your trip? This guide covers everything from getting to Mersing and choosing the right time to visit, to things to do and where to stay before your boat ride.

Why Visit the Islands Around Johor?

Just off the coast of Mersing, you'll find several islands with their own distinct appeal. Pulau Rawa, Pulau Besar, and Pulau Sibu are among the better-known options.

Pulau Rawa is a favourite for its clear waters and iconic waterslide. Pulau Sibu, on the other hand, offers a more laid-back setting surrounded by greenery.

The waters around these islands are generally calm and shallow. This makes them suitable for swimming, snorkelling, and other water activities.

Another reason to consider a Johor island getaway is the slower pace. The islands around Mersing are less developed than some of Malaysia's major beach destinations.

Expect smaller resorts and fewer crowds. You can spend more time by the beach without having to fill your schedule with activities.

How to Get to a Johor Island

Your journey starts in Mersing, which serves as the main gateway to several islands off Johor's coast. Once you arrive at the jetty, continue by boat to your chosen island.

1. Make Your Way to Mersing Jetty

By Car: From Johor Bahru, Mersing takes around 2 hours by car. If you're driving from Kuala Lumpur, allow around 3.5 hours for the journey.

By Bus: Buses are available from Johor Bahru and Singapore. Fares generally start from around RM20 to RM40, depending on your departure point.

2. Take a Boat to Your Chosen Island

By Speedboat: From Mersing Jetty, you can take a boat to islands such as Pulau Rawa and Pulau Besar. The crossing usually takes 20 to 45 minutes. Return fares are typically around RM70 to RM100.

Tip: Check your boat transfer when booking your resort. Many island resorts arrange transfers for their guests.

Booking them together can also make things easier, particularly during weekends and peak travel periods.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Johor Island?

A good island trip depends partly on the weather. Sea conditions can affect boat crossings, visibility, and the activities you can enjoy.

If you're planning to visit several islands, it's even more important to check the conditions before you go.

1. Jetty Hours and Boat Transfers

Mersing Jetty: Boat services usually operate from early morning until late afternoon. The ticket counters are generally open from around 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Boat Schedules: Departure times can change based on the tide and passenger numbers. Some routes may not follow a fixed schedule.

Check with your resort or boat operator at least a day before your trip. This way, you'll know where and when to board.

2. Best Time of the Day

Morning (7:30 AM - 11:00 AM): Start your journey early if possible. Morning crossings are often more comfortable, and you'll have more time to settle in before the afternoon heat.

Late Afternoon (4:00 PM - 6:30 PM): The temperature is more pleasant later in the day. Take a stroll along the beach, go for a swim, or find a good spot for sunset photos.

3. Best Months to Visit

Dry Season (March to September): This is generally the more favourable period for an island getaway. Sea conditions tend to be calmer, with better visibility for water activities.

Monsoon Season (November to February): Many resorts and islands close during these months. Rough seas and strong winds can also affect boat services, so check the latest conditions before making your plans.

Top Things to Do on a Johor Island

There's no need to pack your itinerary with activities. A few simple experiences are enough to make the most of your time on the islands.

1. Snorkel Around the Coral Reefs

You don't always need a boat trip to see marine life. Pulau Besar and Pulau Rawa have coral reefs close to the shore.

Keep an eye out for colourful species such as clownfish and parrotfish. Reef sharks can also be spotted in some areas.

Remember to follow the safety instructions provided by your resort or local guides when snorkelling.

2. Try Rawa's Famous Waterslide

Pulau Rawa has an attraction that's hard to miss. Its waterslide sends you straight from the platform into the sea.

It's one of the island's most recognisable features. The slide is also a popular choice for families and groups travelling together.

3. Hike Up to a Viewpoint

Want to see the islands from a different angle? Several islands, including Rawa and Tinggi, have short trails leading to elevated viewpoints.

Some walks take less than 30 minutes. The terrain can still vary, so wear suitable footwear and bring water with you.

Where to Stay Near Mersing Jetty

If your boat leaves early in the morning, staying overnight in Mersing can make your trip easier. It's also a good option if you're driving from Johor Bahru or Kuala Lumpur and don't want to rush to the jetty.

1. Mersing Beach Resort

Mersing Beach Resort sits right on the beach, with a swimming pool and sea views that make it a nice spot to catch the sunset before your ferry the next day.

It's a good pick if you'd rather spend your evening in Mersing by the water than in a plain town-centre room.
