Tucked away in the ulu (remote area) of Besut, Terengganu, La Hot Spring is one of those places that doesn't show up on every tourist itinerary, and that's exactly its charm. This natural sulphur hot spring has been drawing locals from Terengganu and neighbouring Kelantan for decades, long before it was officially opened as a tourist spot back in 1992. 

The hot water shoots straight out of a hillside and pools naturally, with temperatures said to reach up to 75°C in some spots, so you'll want to ease in slowly. If you're after a proper off-the-beaten-track experience away from Malaysia's more famous hot springs, La Hot Spring has everything you need. 

Beyond the hot pools themselves, there's more to explore here than most people expect, so here's a quick rundown of what to look out for during your visit.

This is the star attraction: sulphur-rich hot water gushing straight out of the hillside into a natural pool. It's genuinely a sight to see, especially with steam rising off the water in the cooler morning air.

For visitors who find the natural pool too hot, there are constructed pools, including a wading pool for children and elders, where the water is a more manageable temperature.

Right next to the hot spring runs a cool river stream, so you can literally hop between hot and cold for a proper contrast-therapy soak, which locals swear by for tired muscles.

A few smaller, more secluded hot pools are available for those who'd rather not share the water with a crowd, ideal for couples or small groups.

If you fancy staying overnight, there are basic chalets and camping grounds on-site, run by the local district council, for a proper back-to-nature experience.

La Hot Spring is located at Sungai Peng., 22010, Jerteh, Terengganu, Malaysia. Getting there takes a bit of planning since it's genuinely in the ulu, but that's part of what keeps it peaceful.

La Hot Spring sits around 34 km from Jerteh town and roughly 130 km from Kuala Terengganu city, in the Hulu Besut area. Driving is by far your best bet, whether that's a self-drive rental car or a Grab from Jerteh or Kuala Besut, and the last stretch of road winds through some proper rural scenery. 

Public transport doesn't really reach this far, so if you don't have your own wheels, it's worth booking with a local outdoor tour operator who can arrange transport, meals, and even a short jungle trek as part of the package.

Weekday mornings are your best bet if you want the place to yourself, since weekends and school holidays bring a steady stream of local families. Malaysia's drier months, roughly from March to September, also make for a smoother drive in, as the rural roads can get a bit rough during the wetter monsoon season from November to February.

A few practical pointers to make your trip smoother, especially since this isn't your typical, fully-serviced tourist attraction.

1. Bring Your Own Supplies. Toiletries, towels, and drinking water are a must, as facilities on-site are fairly basic. There are food stalls, but don't rely on them being open every single day.

2. Wear Modest Swimwear. Given the local, largely Muslim community that frequents this spot, it's respectful (and more comfortable for everyone) to wear modest swimwear rather than a typical bikini or swim trunks.

3. Test the Water Gradually. The natural pool can be scalding hot in places, so ease in slowly and stick to the cooler, man-made pools if you're visiting with kids or elderly family members.

4. Fill Up Your Tank Beforehand. Petrol stations get scarce the closer you get to the springs, so top up in Jerteh town before making the drive in.

5. Go Early for Photos. The steam rising off the hot pools looks stunning in the early morning light, so if you're after good photos, aim to arrive shortly after sunrise.

Since you've already made the trip out to Hulu Besut, it's worth combining your visit with a few other nearby spots.

Roughly a 20-to-30 minute drive away (19-20 km), this multi-tiered waterfall is a lovely follow-up stop for a refreshing dip after your hot spring soak.

Another waterfall in the same general area, around 25 minutes' drive from the hot spring, popular with locals for a quieter, more low-key nature spot.

About 60 minutes' drive away, this bustling jetty town is the main gateway to the Perhentian Islands, and a good spot for fresh seafood before or after your trip.

Located roughly 55 minutes’ drive away from the hot spring, this scenic beach and hill area is worth a stop if you have time to spare, especially for sunset views.

Since La Hot Spring sits in a fairly rural part of Besut, there aren't proper international-standard 4 or 5-star hotels right next to it. Most decent accommodation clusters around Kuala Besut town and Jerteh, roughly 30–45 minutes' drive from the springs.
