Langkawi has no shortage of postcard-perfect sandy beaches, but tucked away on its north-western tip is something completely different: Pebble Beach. 

As the name suggests, there's no sand here at all, just a striking carpet of smooth pebbles and rocks running along the shoreline, framed by jungle on one side and the turquoise Andaman Sea on the other. It's one of those spots that even many locals haven't heard of, which is exactly what makes it worth the detour.

Getting there takes a bit of effort, a short trek down a jungle trail off Jalan Datai, but the reward is a quiet, untouched stretch of coast that feels a world away from the busier beaches further south. 

Pebble Beach isn't about swimming or sunbathing; it's about the scenery and the sense of discovery. Here's what to look out for once you're there.

The beach's defining feature is its blanket of smooth, rounded pebbles in every shape and size, formed over years of wave action grinding against the rocky coastline. It's a fantastic spot for photography, especially with the contrast of dark rocks against blue water.

Reaching the beach means walking a narrow, shaded trail through coastal forest for around 50 metres. It's short but atmospheric, and gives the whole visit a proper "hidden gem" feel before you even reach the shore.

Pebble Beach sits directly opposite Temurun Waterfall, Langkawi's tallest cascade. Many visitors combine both stops in a single outing since they're right across from each other on Jalan Datai.

At the top of the trail, there's a simple open-air restaurant called 3-Tiga where you can grab a drink or a bite before or after your walk down. It's not always open, so treat it as a bonus rather than a guarantee.

Because the shore is made up of pebbles rather than sand, it's a great spot for beachcombing and poking around small rockpools at low tide, more of a nature-watching beach than a swimming one.

Unlike museums or paid attractions, Pebble Beach is a public beach, so the rules here are refreshingly simple.

Pebble Beach is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, since it's public land with no gates or ticketing. That said, visiting after dark isn't advisable given the steep jungle trail and lack of lighting, so daylight hours are the way to go.

Entry fee. There is no admission charge at all; access to the beach and the trail leading down to it is completely free. Roadside parking is available near the trailhead off Jalan Datai, though it's informal and unmarked, so arrive with a bit of patience.

1. There is no toilet on site, so plan ahead before heading down the trail.

2. The only nearby option for food and drink is the small 3-Tiga eatery at the top of the trail, which doesn't keep consistent hours.

3. There is minimal to none signage. It helps to have GPS coordinates or a map ready before you set off.

4. The beach isn't regularly maintained, so don't expect groomed sand or rubbish bins, part of its wild, untouched charm.

Pebble Beach sits at the north-western tip of Langkawi, in the Datai area, directly opposite Temurun Waterfall along Jalan Datai (Road 161). Here's how to reach it and when to time your visit.

The easiest way to reach Pebble Beach is by car or taxi via Jalan Datai, the same road that leads to The Datai Langkawi resort and the former site of The Andaman. Look out for the trailhead roughly opposite Temurun Waterfall; there's no official signboard, so many visitors ask locally or use map coordinates 

From there, it's a short but steep 50-metre walk down a forested path to the shore. Since public transport doesn't run this far north, a rental car, taxi, or private driver is really your only practical option.

Aim for the dry season between November and March, when trails are less slippery and the sea is calmer. Early morning or late afternoon works best for both cooler temperatures and softer light for photos. Avoid visiting right after heavy rain, as the descent can get muddy and the currents rougher.

1. Wear proper footwear. Between the uneven pebbles and the steep jungle trail, flip-flops won't cut it here. Trainers or hiking sandals with grip will make the walk far more comfortable.

2. Bring your own water and snacks. Since facilities are minimal and the 3-Tiga eatery isn't always open, it's worth packing a bottle of water and a snack before you set off.

3. Don't expect crowds (or Company). This is one of Langkawi's least-visited beaches, which is part of the appeal, but it also means fewer people around if something goes wrong, so let someone know your plans if you're heading down solo.

4. Watch your step on the way down. The trail can be slippery, particularly after rain. Take it slowly, especially on the way back up.
