Poda Island Travel Guide: Beaches, Boat Trips, and Best Time to Visit

Poda Island is one of Krabi, Thailand's most popular island escapes, known for its white-sand beach, turquoise sea, and dramatic limestone scenery. Located off the coast of Ao Nang, it is a favourite stop for travellers looking for a relaxed beach day or a classic Krabi island-hopping experience.

This guide explains where Poda Island is, what to do, when to visit, how to get there, estimated costs, and where to stay near the departure points.

Poda Island Location

Poda Island, also written as Ko Poda, is located in the Andaman Sea, off the coast of Ao Nang in Krabi Province, southern Thailand. It is part of the island-hopping circuit that commonly includes nearby destinations such as Chicken Island, Tup Island, and Mor Island.

The island is relatively small and is best known for its beach, clear waters, and offshore limestone formations. Ko Poda is popular for island-hopping, snorkelling, and beach activities.

Most visitors travel to Poda Island from Ao Nang Beach, although boats can also be arranged from other beaches around Krabi. As there is limited accommodation and few visitor facilities on the island, most travellers return to the mainland after their excursion.

Why Visit Poda Island?

Poda Island is a good addition to a Krabi holiday if you want a straightforward beach escape without travelling to a distant province. Its scenery is especially appealing to visitors who enjoy swimming, taking photographs, and spending time by the sea.

Here are a few reasons to include Poda Island in your itinerary:

Iconic Krabi scenery: The white beach, turquoise water and limestone formations create the classic coastal landscape associated with Krabi.
Easy island-hopping stop: Poda Island is often included in half-day or full-day boat tours from Ao Nang.
Beach relaxation: It is a convenient place to swim, sunbathe, or enjoy a picnic by the sea.
Snorkelling opportunities: The surrounding waters may offer opportunities to see tropical fish and marine life, depending on the location and sea conditions.
Suitable for different travellers: Couples, families, groups of friends, and solo travellers can all enjoy the island, provided they are comfortable with boat travel and outdoor conditions.

Unlike a large resort island, Poda Island is primarily a nature and day-trip destination. Visitors should not expect extensive shopping, nightlife, or a wide choice of restaurants.

Best Things to Do

Poda Island's appeal comes from its natural surroundings rather than a long list of built attractions. Most activities take place around the beach and nearby waters.

1. Relax on Poda Island Beach

The island's main beach is its biggest attraction. White sand, shallow-looking turquoise water and views of limestone formations make it a popular place to relax between boat excursions.

Bring a beach towel, sunscreen, and drinking water. Depending on the day's conditions and local arrangements, some areas may be busier when several tour boats arrive.

2. Swim in the Turquoise Water

Swimming is one of the simplest ways to enjoy Poda Island. The water can be inviting, but conditions vary with tides, wind, and weather.

Always follow local safety instructions and pay attention to designated swimming areas. Avoid entering the water during rough conditions or when boat traffic is nearby.

3. Go Snorkelling

Snorkelling is commonly included in Krabi island-hopping tours, although the exact snorkelling location may be around Poda Island or another nearby island. Marine visibility depends on the season, tides, and weather.

If snorkelling is your main priority, ask the operator which sites are included, whether equipment is provided and how much time is allocated for the activity.

4. Take Photos of the Limestone Scenery

Poda Island's offshore limestone formations are a defining part of its landscape. The contrast between the pale sand, blue-green sea, and rugged rock formations makes the island a popular photography stop.

Early morning and late afternoon can offer softer light, although tour schedules and boat availability may determine when you arrive.

5. Enjoy a Picnic by the Sea

Many island-hopping packages include lunch or a simple picnic stop. If you are travelling independently, bring food and water from the mainland, as facilities on Poda Island are limited compared with Ao Nang.

Remember to take your rubbish with you and follow local environmental rules.

6. Combine It with Nearby Islands

Poda Island is often visited as part of a wider island-hopping route. Depending on the tour, nearby stops may include:

Chicken Island: Recognised for its distinctive rock formation and coastal scenery.
Tup Island and Mor Island: Known for their beaches and, at suitable tide conditions, the sandbar connecting the islands.
Railay Beach: A mainland peninsula accessible by boat, famous for limestone cliffs and beaches.

The exact route depends on the operator, weather and sea conditions.

Best Time to Visit

The most suitable period for a Poda Island trip is generally November to April, when Krabi's weather is typically drier and sea conditions are often more favourable for boat excursions.

However, weather can change quickly, and boat services may be adjusted or cancelled for safety reasons.

Poda Island Weather Guide

November to February: Generally cooler and drier, with comfortable conditions for beach activities and sightseeing. This is part of the popular travel season.

March to April: Warmer and often sunny, making it suitable for swimming and island-hopping. Bring sun protection and stay hydrated.

May to October: The southwest monsoon can bring more rain, stronger, winds and less predictable sea conditions. Boat trips may be affected, particularly during rough weather.

For the best experience, check the forecast before booking a boat and confirm whether the operator offers a refund or rescheduling option if the trip is cancelled due to weather.

How to Get to Poda Island

The most common way to reach Poda Island is by longtail boat or speedboat from Ao Nang Beach. You can arrange a private boat, join a shared island-hopping tour or book a package through a travel platform.

For Malaysians, you can book a flight to Krabi International Airport (KBV). Upon landing at Krabi Airport, you need to head to the coast where the long-tail boats operate in Ao Nang Beach. The overland journey takes about 30 to 45 minutes:

Option 1: Longtail Boat from Ao Nang

Longtail boats are a traditional and popular way to travel around Krabi's nearby islands. The crossing from Ao Nang to Poda Island generally takes around 30–45 minutes, depending on sea conditions and the departure point.

A practical budgeting estimate for a shared or arranged return longtail boat trip is approximately THB 400 – THB 600 per person (around RM 52 – RM 78, THB 1 = RM 0.13) depending on the operator, group size, and inclusions.

Private boat hire can cost more, particularly for smaller groups or flexible itineraries. Ask whether the quoted fare includes a return journey, island fees, and other stops.

Option 2: Join an Island-Hopping Tour

An organised tour is often the easiest option for first-time visitors. Packages may include hotel transfers, boat transport, snorkelling equipment, lunch, and several island stops.

A typical half-day or full-day tour may cost approximately THB 800 – THB 1,500 per person (around RM 104 – RM195), depending on the boat type, itinerary and inclusions. These are planning estimates rather than fixed 2026 prices.

Before booking, check:

Whether national park fees are included
Whether hotel pick-up and drop-off are provided
Whether lunch, drinking water, and snorkelling equipment are included

How to Get Around Poda Island

Poda Island is small, and most visitors explore it on foot rather than using vehicles. There are no regular taxis or extensive road networks for tourists.

Walking: The main way to move between the beach and nearby areas.
Boat transfers: Used to arrive, depart, and visit other islands.
Swimming: Suitable only in safe, designated areas, and when sea conditions allow.
Tour guide assistance: Useful for understanding the route, timing and safety arrangements.

Wear suitable footwear if you plan to walk around the island, and avoid wandering into restricted or environmentally sensitive areas.

Smart Tips for Visiting Poda Island

A little preparation makes an island trip more comfortable, especially because Poda Island has fewer facilities than mainland Krabi.

Start early: Morning departures can help you avoid some of the busiest periods and stronger midday heat.
Carry cash: Small purchases, local fees or boat arrangements may require cash in Thai baht.
Bring sun protection: Pack sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and a reusable water bottle.
Pack light: A dry bag or waterproof pouch is useful for phones, wallets, and other valuables.
Check tour inclusions: Confirm whether the package includes park fees, lunch, snorkelling equipment, and hotel transfers.
Respect the environment: Do not leave rubbish behind, touch coral, or disturb marine life.
Follow safety instructions: Listen to boat operators and guides, particularly when swimming or snorkelling.
Prepare for limited facilities: Do not rely on the island for extensive shopping, ATMs, or a wide choice of food.
Keep your itinerary flexible: Rough seas and weather changes can affect boat operations.

8.30am – Board your longtail or speedboat for the 4-island tour.
9.00am – Stop at Chicken Island and the Tup Island sandbar (tide permitting).
