Seychelles doesn't come up as often as Bali or the Maldives when Malaysians talk about island holidays, but it honestly deserves a spot on the list. This archipelago off the coast of East Africa is made up of over 100 granite and coral islands, with turquoise water, giant tortoises and some of the most photographed beaches on Earth. It's a destination that feels genuinely untouched compared to more crowded tropical spots.

The catch is that Seychelles isn't the easiest place to reach from Malaysia, and the trip does require some planning around flights, inter-island ferries and where exactly to base yourself. 

Seychelles is an archipelago nation in the western Indian Ocean, sitting roughly 1,500 km east of mainland Africa, off the coast of Kenya and Tanzania.

The country is made up of 115 islands, but almost all visitors stick to the three main ones: Mahé (the largest island, home to the capital Victoria and the international airport), Praslin (known for its pristine beaches and the Vallée de Mai nature reserve), and La Digue (a small, car-free island famous for its granite boulder beaches). Traveling from Malaysia, Seychelles sits roughly 6,500 km away, which puts it firmly in long-haul territory. 

Seychelles' biggest draws are almost entirely natural; beaches, reefs and rare wildlife rather than man-made landmarks, which is exactly the appeal for a lot of travellers.

Located on La Digue, this is arguably the most photographed beach in the world, famous for its giant granite boulders framing powder-white sand and shallow turquoise water.

Seychelles is one of the most open destinations in the world, welcoming every nationality visa-free, though there's a digital step Malaysians need to complete before flying.

Every visitor must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) online prior to departure via the official Seychelles Electronic Border System. The standard processing fee is €10.90 (approximately RM 50 to 60), after which a Visitor's Permit valid for up to three months is issued upon arrival at the airport 

You'll need a passport valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates, proof of onward travel, confirmed accommodation and evidence of sufficient funds. There's no direct flight from Kuala Lumpur to Seychelles, so most Malaysians connect through Dubai with Emirates or Doha with Qatar Airways. 

A typical routing departs Kuala Lumpur around 11:30 PM, arrives in Dubai the next morning around 4:00 AM, then connects onward to Mahé (Seychelles International Airport), landing around 10:30 AM local time. The full journey, including the layover, usually takes between 15 and 18 hours depending on your connection.

Once you land on Mahé, getting to Praslin or La Digue means a boat ride, since these islands aren't connected by road or bridge. The Cat Cocos high-speed catamaran ferry is the standard way to island-hop, and it isn't cheap: a one-way ticket from Mahé to Praslin costs around €56 + €2 port fee (approx. RM 275) in economy class, while Mahé to La Digue runs about €66 + €2 port fee (approx. RM 325) one-way, with the Praslin-to-La Digue leg costing roughly RM 70. 

Journey times are short, about 1 hour 10 minutes to Praslin and 1 hour 45 minutes to La Digue including the stop at Praslin, but it's worth booking these ferries in advance during peak season, as seats do sell out.

Seychelles sits close to the equator, so the weather stays warm year-round, but there are still two loose seasons worth knowing about before you book.

The driest and most popular months run from May to September, when the south-east trade winds keep things cooler and less humid, making it ideal for hiking and beach days. 

October to April tends to be warmer and more humid with a higher chance of rain, though it's also when the calmer seas make for particularly good snorkelling and diving conditions, especially around March and April. 

Whichever season you choose, temperatures generally stay between 24°C and 32°C, so packing light, breathable clothing works year-round.

A moderate hike in Morne Seychellois National Park on Mahé, rewarding you with panoramic views over the island and coastline at the summit.

Combine a ferry crossing with cycling around the car-free island, visiting Anse Source d'Argent and other beaches along the way.

Fresh fish, octopus curry and grilled seafood are staples here, and sampling a proper Creole meal is one of the simplest ways to experience local culture.

A relaxed way to see Mahé's coastline from the water, typically with drinks and snorkelling stops included along the way.

Given the long journey to get there, most Malaysian travellers aim for at least 6 to 7 days to properly experience more than one island.

Day 1: Arrive on Mahé, settle into your hotel, and spend the afternoon relaxing at Beau Vallon Beach. 

Day 2: Explore Victoria's market and clock tower in the morning, then hike the Copolia Trail in Morne Seychellois National Park in the afternoon. 

Day 3: Take the Cat Cocos ferry to Praslin, check into your hotel, and spend the afternoon at Anse Lazio or Grand Anse. 

Day 4: Visit the Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve in the morning, then take a boat trip to Curieuse Island to see the giant tortoises. 

Day 5: Ferry over to La Digue for the day, cycling around the island and visiting Anse Source d'Argent. 

Day 6: Return to Mahé, with time for last-minute souvenir shopping or a sunset catamaran cruise. 

Day 7: Use your final day for a slower pace — a spa treatment or one more beach morning before your flight home.

If you only have 4 days, focus on Mahé and Praslin, skipping La Digue to avoid too much time spent on ferries.

1. Bring a mix of euros and Seychellois Rupees, as some local eateries and ferry transfers don't always accept cards, while resorts and larger restaurants generally do. 

2. Book your inter-island ferries in advance if you're travelling during the dry season (May to September), as seats on popular routes fill up quickly. 

3. Wear modest clothes for visits to religious or rural areas, since Seychelles, while relaxed, still appreciates a degree of modesty outside resort zones.
