Sipiso Piso Waterfall is located in Tongging Village, Merek District, Karo Regency, North Sumatra, on the northern edge of the Lake Toba caldera.

The waterfall is around 120 metres high and sits in the highlands of Karo, roughly 24 km from Kabanjahe and around 40 km from Berastagi. From Medan, the waterfall is approximately 110–117 km away by road.

Its setting is part of what makes the waterfall special. Rather than simply falling into a forest valley, Sipiso Piso plunges from the volcanic plateau with the vast landscape of Lake Toba stretching out below.

Sipiso Piso is one of Indonesia's tallest waterfalls, dropping roughly 120 metres down a steep cliff. From the viewing area, the water appears as a narrow white line against the green volcanic landscape.

The name Sipiso Piso, commonly explained as meaning "like a knife" in the local Batak language, refers to the waterfall's thin, sharp-looking stream as it cuts down the cliff.

The waterfall's source makes the scenery even more interesting. Water from an underground river on the Karo plateau emerges through a cave in the side of the Toba caldera before plunging down the cliff.

Direct flights currently operate on this route, with airlines including AirAsia, Batik Air and Malaysia Airlines. Flight time is around one hour. Once you land in Medan, the trip continues by road.

From Kualanamu, you can hire a private car with driver or rent a car at Traveloka and drive towards Berastagi, then continue through Kabanjahe and Merek towards Tongging.

Silangit International Airport, officially Sisingamangaraja XII International Airport, is another airport serving the Lake Toba region. However, the overland journey to Sipiso Piso still takes around 3–4 hours, so Kualanamu can be more practical from Kuala Lumpur when a direct international flight to Medan fits your itinerary.

Morning is generally the best time to visit, especially if you want clearer views and more comfortable temperatures. Around 8:00–11:00 AM, the light can also create a rainbow around the waterfall when conditions are right.

For weather, the drier months can offer clearer views and more comfortable conditions for the stairs, while wetter periods can give the waterfall stronger flow. The trade-off is that rain can make the steps slippery and reduce visibility around Lake Toba.
