The main attraction of Erawan Waterfall lies in its structure, which consists of seven main tiers. Each tier has its own name and unique characteristics. The name 'Erawan' is derived from the mythology of the three headed white elephant, as the shape of the cliff at the topmost tier is said to resemble this legendary elephant.
In addition to its unique origins, the clarity of the water is also breathtaking. The water in each natural pool appears turquoise in color, a hue derived from dissolving limestone. Levels 1 and 2 are very easy to reach and feature shaded relaxation areas. As you ascend to levels 3 through 7, the views of the waterfalls and lush trees feel increasingly natural and challenging.
In addition to the waterfall, the journey to the upper levels takes you through a forested area with tall trees, rocks, and increasingly steep trails. The atmosphere is a world apart from the bustling city center of Bangkok.

Erawan Waterfall is located within Erawan National Park, Si Sawat District, Kanchanaburi Province, in Western Thailand. The national park was established in 1975 and covers an area of approximately 550 km².
It’s not exactly in the heart of Bangkok. From Bangkok, the drive to Erawan Waterfall takes about 3 hours, while from downtown Kanchanaburi it’s about 1.5 hours. For this reason, Erawan Waterfall is best visited as a day trip from Kanchanaburi or as part of a 2–3-day itinerary in the province.
For foreign tourists, as of June 2026, the entrance fee is 300 baht for adults and 150 baht for children ages 3-14. Rates are subject to change, so be sure to check official announcements before you go.
What can you expect to do at this tourist destination? Here are some exciting activities to enjoy:
At nearly every tier of the waterfall, there are natural pools of turquoise water surrounded by lush trees. Visitors are allowed to swim and soak in most of these tiers. The water feels cool and refreshing.
As you soak your feet or sit quietly in the water, small fish native to the river, known as “Doctor Fish” or the local Gara Rufa species, will come to you. These fish will gently nibble and naturally remove dead skin cells from your feet. In addition to providing a unique tickling sensation, this activity serves as a free form of relaxation that’s very popular among tourists.
For adventure lovers, conquering all levels of the waterfall is an activity not to be missed. This approximately 1.5-km trekking route starts from the information center and leads to the top of the 7th level.

One of the benefits of visiting Erawan is that you can combine it with several other tourist attractions in Kanchanaburi.
The Bridge over the River Kwai is one of the most famous landmarks in Kanchanaburi and is linked to the history of the Death Railway during World War II. From Erawan National Park, it’s about 65–70 km away, according to various travel sources.
To continue with the historical tourism theme, you can visit the Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum. This area is associated with the construction of the Death Railway and is one of the most important historical sites in Kanchanaburi.
The Srinagarind Dam is located along the same route to Erawan and is a great option for enjoying views of the reservoir and the mountains. This area is ideal if you want to extend your trip in the Si Sawat region.
If you’d like to see another waterfall, Huai Mae Khamin Falls is located in Sri Nakharin Dam National Park, about 43 km from Erawan Falls, according to Thai National Parks. This waterfall is a great alternative for travelers looking to explore other waterfall areas around Kanchanaburi.
Follow these tips to ensure your vacation goes smoothly.
Arriving earlier in the morning gives you more time to hike to the top.
It’s recommended to bring cash, especially since the location is in a fairly rural area.
There are specific rules regarding food and drinks along the waterfall trail. Thai National Parks notes that food is not allowed past the second level. For drink bottles, visitors are charged a 20-baht deposit, which is refunded when the bottle is returned.
