Somewhere in the Celebes Sea off Sabah's east coast sits a strip of sand so small you could walk its length in a few minutes, yet it's become one of the most photographed spots in the Semporna Archipelago. That's Timba-Timba Island, a sliver of white sand and turquoise water that's earned a reputation as Sabah's answer to the Maldives, minus the overwater villas.

Unlike its more famous neighbours Sipadan and Mabul, Timba-Timba isn't really known for headline dive sites. It's known for something simpler: soft sand, glassy water, and the kind of uncrowded, photogenic scenery that makes for an easy, low-effort day trip out of Semporna.

Timba-Timba sits within the Semporna Archipelago, sandwiched between Mataking Island and Kulapuan Island, with Pom Pom and Pandanan not far to the north. The island itself is little more than a sand cay, around a kilometre of beach at most, with no permanent structures beyond basic visitor facilities.

What it lacks in size, it makes up for in photogenic value. At low tide, a narrow sandbar emerges and stretches out into the sea, often described as looking like a bridal veil trailing into the water, a genuinely striking sight and the reason this island shows up so often on Instagram. For snorkellers, the coral reef sits close to shore on both sides of the island. The western side has denser, more elaborate coral but fewer fish, while the eastern side offers a livelier reef with plenty of colourful fish and regular green sea turtle sightings. Conditions vary depending on the day, so your guide will usually decide which side to snorkel based on currents and visibility.

Timba-Timba also plays host to a small turtle hatchery. Frequent turtle sightings around the island have made it a recognised safe nesting spot, and the hatchery helps protect eggs before releasing hatchlings back into the sea, a nice bonus for anyone visiting who cares about marine conservation alongside the photo ops.

There's no accommodation on Timba-Timba itself, this is strictly a day-trip destination. Basic facilities are available, including toilets, shelters, and beach chairs, along with a gazebo and hammocks for lounging between swims. Part of the island is managed by a tour operator with these amenities, while another section remains an undeveloped stretch of sandbank.

Because there's no resort or jetty infrastructure of its own, virtually everyone visits as part of an organised island-hopping tour rather than independently, so factor that into your planning.

Most visitors reach Sabah's east coast by flying into Tawau Airport, either via Kota Kinabalu or directly from Kuala Lumpur with AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines. From Tawau, it's roughly an hour by road to Semporna town, the main jumping-off point for the entire archipelago.

From Semporna jetty, speedboats to Timba-Timba take around 45 minutes. 1. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a hat. There's very little natural shade beyond the gazebo and huts.

3. Check the tide times. The famous sandbar view is best seen at low tide, so ask your operator when this falls on the day of your visit.

4. Pack light and waterproof. Since you're moving between boats, beach, and water, a dry bag for your phone or camera is genuinely useful.

5. Bring cash. Facilities are basic, and card payment options on the island itself are unlikely to be available.
