Ulu Yam Waterfall: Selangor's Cool Escape Just Outside Kuala Lumpur

Traveloka MY
7 min read

Less than two hours from the city, the jungles of Hulu Selangor hide a string of waterfalls that locals simply call the Ulu Yam Waterfall. Tucked between two historic villages; Ulu Yam Lama and Ulu Yam Bharu, this multi-tiered cascade has been a weekend refuge for KL residents for decades, long before "waterfall hikes" became an Instagram trend.

For travellers searching for an Ulu Yam Waterfall experience, the area is less about one giant cascade and more about spending time beside cool river pools, small waterfalls, and forest scenery. Sungai Tua is one of the easiest places to start, with picnic areas, camping facilities, swimming spots, and a suspension bridge.

Where is Ulu Yam Waterfall?

If you are using “Ulu Yam Waterfall” as your search term, Sungai Tua Eco Forest Park is one of the key places to put on your itinerary. The park sits within the Selangor State Park and is around 10 km from Bandar Baru Selayang, making it accessible enough for a day trip from Kuala Lumpur.

The park is surrounded by hill dipterocarp forest and has natural river pools and rapids where visitors can swim. It also has gazebos, pavilions, camping grounds, changing rooms, and a suspension bridge.

The landscape is more relaxed than the dramatic waterfall destinations found elsewhere in Malaysia. Instead of travelling specifically for one towering cascade, visitors generally come here to combine water activities, picnicking, and time in the forest.

Getting to Ulu Yam from Kuala Lumpur

Reaching Ulu Yam is most convenient by car, particularly if you want to visit more than one attraction in the surrounding area. Sungai Tua Eco Forest Park can be reached from Kuala Lumpur via Batu Caves and the B23 route towards Ulu Yam.

By Car

Follow these steps for the drive:

1.
Leave Kuala Lumpur and head towards Batu Caves.
2.
Join B23, following the route towards Ulu Yam.
3.
Continue past the Empangan Batu reservoir.
4.
Look for the entrance and signage for Taman Negeri Selangor / Sungai Tua Eco Forest Park.
5.
Park at the designated area and continue into the recreational forest.

The journey from central Kuala Lumpur generally takes around 30–60 minutes depending on your starting point and traffic. Weekends can be considerably busier, so an early departure is useful if you want a parking space close to the entrance.

By E-Hailing

Grab can work for reaching the area, but returning from a forest attraction can be less straightforward than travelling there. If you do not have your own transport, arrange your return journey in advance rather than relying on finding a driver after your visit.

By Rental Car

For visitors arriving in Kuala Lumpur without a vehicle, renting a car gives you more flexibility. It is particularly useful if you plan to combine Ulu Yam with nearby attractions around Batu Caves, Serendah, Batang Kali, or Hulu Selangor.

What Makes Ulu Yam Worth the Drive?

Ulu Yam has a different appeal from heavily developed recreational destinations around Kuala Lumpur. The experience centres on being beside the water rather than ticking off a long list of attractions.

1. Natural Swimming Pools

These are one of the biggest draws at Sungai Tua. Tourism Selangor specifically highlights its river pools and ponds as places where visitors can take a dip.

2. Rainforest Scenery

It provides the backdrop throughout the recreational forest. The park sits within Hulu Gombak Forest, classified as dipterocarp hill forest, with tropical plants and wildlife around the river environment.

3. The Suspension Bridge

This bridge adds a small adventure element to an otherwise easy-going day. It allows visitors to cross and walk above the river while taking in the surrounding greenery.

4. Picnic Facilities

The picnic area makes Ulu Yam particularly suitable for groups and families. Gazebos and pavilions provide places to sit, eat, and take a break between swims.

Things to Do Around Ulu Yam Waterfall

There is no need to plan an elaborate itinerary here. A few simple activities can easily fill a morning or afternoon.

1. Take a Dip in the River

Bring swimwear if you want to make use of the natural pools. Water depth and conditions vary, so check the area before entering and follow any restrictions displayed at the site.

2. Set Up a Riverside Picnic

Ulu Yam is well suited to a slow lunch beside the water. Pack food, drinks, and a picnic mat, or use one of the designated gazebos and pavilions.

3. Walk Across the Suspension Bridge

The suspension bridge offers a different perspective of the river and surrounding forest. It is also an easy addition for visitors who are not looking for a strenuous hike.

4. Go Camping

Sungai Tua has camping facilities for visitors who want to stay longer. Visit Selangor lists campsite charges from RM 5 per tent, although current fees should be confirmed before your trip.

5. Explore More of Ulu Yam

If you have a full day, look beyond Sungai Tua. Sungai Sendat Amenity Forest is another waterfall destination in the wider area, around 30 km from Rawang, with natural pools, waterfalls, camping, picnicking, and BBQ facilities.

Sungai Sendat: Another Waterfall to Add

Sungai Sendat deserves separate attention because it is often associated with waterfall trips around Ulu Yam. The amenity forest is located in the Batang Kali Reserved Forest and is managed by the Selangor Forestry Department. This forest reserve is nestled within the lush Batang Kali Forest Reserve.

The recreational area includes a waterfall and natural river pools, along with camping, picnic and BBQ facilities. Tourism Selangor currently lists operating hours from 8.00am to 5.00pm daily and an entrance price range of RM 1–RM 2.

Safety Note: Water conditions vary drastically across the different tiers of the falls. The upper two tiers are permanently closed due to historic flash-flood damage and dangerous undercurrents. Visitors must respect the warning barriers and limit their swimming strictly to the designated bottom tier pool

When the Waterfall Area is at Its Best

There is no single month that guarantees perfect waterfall conditions because Ulu Yam is a tropical rainforest environment. Instead, think about what kind of day you want.

For swimming and picnicking, an early start is useful. Morning visits are usually more comfortable before the strongest afternoon heat and can give you a quieter stretch of the river.

Weekdays are another practical choice if you prefer a calmer atmosphere. Sungai Tua is particularly popular with locals at weekends, according to Tourism Selangor.

Rain requires extra caution. The park itself warns that flash flooding can occur because of the area's many water sources. If heavy rain is falling or has recently affected the upstream area, postpone swimming and stay away from fast-moving water.

Opening Hours and Entrance Fees

The official gate hours for Sungai Tua Eco Forest Park are 8.00am to 5.00pm daily. Tickets cost RM 2 for adults and RM 1 for children (aged 12 and below).

Keep in mind that parking fees (typically RM 3 per car) and overnight campsite permits (around RM 10 per tent) are charged separately from your general admission ticket. Be sure to bring small banknotes and coins, as the local entry kiosks usually require cash payments.

What to Eat Before Heading Home

A Ulu Yam waterfall outing works well with a simple food plan. You can bring your own picnic and eat at the designated riverside facilities, or stop for food around Ulu Yam and the surrounding villages after leaving the forest.

For a full-day trip, pack enough drinking water and snacks, particularly if you plan to swim, walk,  and explore more than one recreational area.

Do not leave food exposed around the river or camping areas, and take your rubbish with you. Keeping the picnic areas clean is especially important in a natural recreation site.

A Few Things to Bring Along

Ulu Yam is easy to visit, but the right gear can make the day more comfortable.

1. Bring swimwear and a change of clothes.

2. Wear sandals or shoes with good grip around wet rocks.

3. Carry drinking water and snacks.

4. Pack a waterproof pouch for your phone and valuables.

5. Bring mosquito repellent if you plan to stay until later in the day.

6. Take a rubbish bag for your picnic waste.

7. Check rainfall conditions before entering the river.

8. Follow signs and instructions from the forestry authorities.

Do not swim in fast-moving water after heavy rain, and avoid areas that have been cordoned off. A waterfall outing is much more enjoyable when you leave enough room for changing weather and river conditions.
