All you need to know on Malaysia’s new flight safety procedures

Written by: Valerie Vanessa Ebal

The current global pandemic has caused us all to be grounded. It has redefined a new normal for us, a new way of doing things and living our lives. As domestic air travel resumes and we approach the recovery MCO phase here in Malaysia, we begin to reclaim spaces while we gradually regain the freedom to move — and we honestly can’t be happier. However, before proceeding to book that flight back home or to that quick getaway destination, it is important to know how airport and airline procedures have changed, to be better prepared and to guard our safety. Here we have listed all the preparations you need to make and things to expect before flying and traveling in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic in Malaysia.

Essential checklist before you fly

1.
Make sure you are healthy, fit to fly and have no respiratory disease symptoms.
2.
Be fully aware and correctly informed about your destination’s quarantine policy and other requirements.
3.
You have obtained all travel approvals and documents.
Passengers need a valid written approval and stamped letter from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for interstate travel in order to be able to check in at the airport. Permits are granted for reasons such as emergencies; attending to death in the family, for work and also couples who were living apart.
Alternatively, Malaysians who have completed the 14-day quarantine at designated quarantine centers may present the letter issued by the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) in exchange of Police Permit. Any letter or document issued by other individuals, companies or government agencies besides PDRM and NADMA, will not be accepted and you shall be referred to the KLIA Police.

At the airport

Who is allowed into the airport?

For KLIA 1, only passengers with a valid flight ticket and boarding pass will be allowed to enter. Family members or friends of the passenger who are not traveling are not allowed into the airport.

For KLIA 2, the public will only be allowed in up to the gateway@klia2 shopping mall. All visitors will be required to wear a face mask and have their body temperature checked before being allowed in.
