Senai Airport, or Senai International Airport (JHB), is the airport for Johor Bahru and the main airport for southern Peninsular Malaysia. Its code says JHB, but it is not in the city itself. It lies in Senai, in the Kulai District of Johor, and the operator puts the taxi ride to Johor Bahru city centre at about 30 minutes. There is a single passenger building, the Senai International Airport terminal, which handles both domestic and international flights. You may still see the airport's former name, Sultan Ismail International Airport, on older maps and signs.
Unlike most Malaysian airports, Senai is not run by Malaysia Airports. It is operated by a private company, Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn. Bhd. The airport is also a practical option for travellers based in or near Singapore, thanks to bus links that continue across the border from JB Sentral. Read on for the airlines that fly here, the ways to reach Johor Bahru and beyond, parking, what is inside the terminal and some tips for flying through JHB.
Senai keeps things simple. There is one terminal, so you never need to work out which building to go to. The landside area is built around the Aeromall, a shopping and services area where you will find check-in kiosks, transport counters and shops. Security, immigration for international flights and the Departure Hall are upstairs on the first floor.
All scheduled passenger flights at Senai use this terminal. The airport's own airlines and destinations page, cross-checked against its flight board, lists these passenger airlines:
The airline list at Senai is short and can change, so search your route to see who is flying it on your dates. Your e-ticket names the airline operating your flight and is the best check before you set off.
Because the airport sits outside Johor Bahru, it is worth planning the ride before you land. Fares are shown at each counter or by the operator, and they change, so they are not listed here.
The Causeway Link airport shuttle bus runs between Senai Airport and JB Sentral, the main transport hub in Johor Bahru. Buy your ticket at the Causeway Link counter inside the Aeromall. In good traffic the ride takes about 45 minutes. At JB Sentral you can change to buses heading across the border to Singapore, which is why many travellers from the Singapore side use Senai.
Express buses also run from the airport to the Desaru Coast resort area and to Legoland Malaysia. Tickets are sold at the Causeway Link counter in the airport. The operator does not state journey times for these routes.
Taxis work on a coupon system. The coupon counter is in front of the main entrance to the Aeromall, and the ride to Johor Bahru city centre takes about 30 minutes. A taxi is the simplest choice late at night or if you have a lot of luggage.
There is no railway station at the airport itself. To travel by KTM train, take a taxi to Kulai train station first and continue from there. It is a useful route if you are heading north along the railway line rather than into Johor Bahru.
The operator lists car rental services at Senai Airport. Renting makes sense if you plan to tour Johor, visit the coast or drive on to other parts of the peninsula.
Which option suits you depends on where you are heading. For Johor Bahru city centre, the taxi is the quicker door-to-door choice and the shuttle bus to JB Sentral is the budget one. For Singapore, the shuttle to JB Sentral followed by a cross-border bus is the usual route. For Desaru Coast or Legoland Malaysia, the express bus goes there directly, and for towns further along the railway, a short taxi ride to Kulai connects you with KTM trains.
Senai Airport has more than 800 parking bays, managed by Metro Parking. You can choose between the Aeromall basement car park, a second basement car park, an open car park for long-term stays and a VIP or premium car park. Discounted rates are offered for long-term parking, which helps if you are away for more than a few days. Current rates are posted on the airport's car park page.
Senai is a smaller airport, but it covers the basics well. The details below come from the operator's own pages. It does not list a prayer room, Wi-Fi, a smoking area or duty-free shopping, so if you need any of these, check with your airline or the airport before you travel.
The Plaza Premium Lounge is on the first floor of the terminal, airside, after security. It is the place to wait in comfort before your flight. Entry is by paid pass, membership or eligible ticket.
The ground floor is the landside Aeromall. Self check-in kiosks are in its left wing, alongside the shops and transport counters. Security screening, immigration for international flights and the Departure Hall are on the first floor. So the rule of thumb is simple: check in and sort out transport downstairs, then head up to fly.
Food outlets are in three places: the landside Aeromall, the terminal ground floor and the Departure Hall. You can eat before security with friends or family, or after it if you prefer to be close to your gate.
Gift and souvenir shops at the airport are handy for a last-minute present from Johor.
A locker service is on the terminal ground floor, useful if you want to leave a bag while you head into Johor Bahru for a few hours.
Bank ATMs are on the terminal ground floor, along with a bureau de change for travellers who need ringgit on arrival.
Massage-chair rest stations are available, and there are reflexology outlets on the ground floor and in the Departure Hall if you want to unwind before boarding.
Baby nursing rooms are on the ground floor and in the Departure Hall. Priority seats and wheelchairs are provided, and guided assistance can be booked in advance for passengers who need extra help moving through the airport. Some travellers on early flights choose a hotel near the airport for the night before.
The operator's advice is to follow your airline's instructions on when to arrive, so check the check-in cut-off on your booking. If you are coming from Singapore, allow extra time for the border crossing and the bus ride from JB Sentral. Once you are at the airport, use the self check-in kiosks in the Aeromall to save time, then go up to the first floor for security.
On international flights, you will pass immigration on the first floor before reaching the Departure Hall. Entry requirements for Malaysia and for your destination are set by each government, so check the official guidance before you travel. For live departure and arrival information, see the Traveloka flight status page.
The fare cards on this page show fares from Johor Bahru to popular destinations. Below them, the flight schedule tables list upcoming departures and arrivals at Senai Airport by date, with the airline and scheduled times. They are a selection rather than a full timetable, so treat them as a quick way to see what is flying.
Choose a route and your dates, compare airlines and times, and book the flight that fits. Heading to Kuala Lumpur? Check whether your flight lands at KLIA or at Subang, as both airports serve the capital. If you would rather wait, set a Price Alert and Traveloka will tell you when the fare changes. Your e-ticket is sent by email and to the app.
