Melbourne Airport (MEL) Tullamarine: Flights, Flight Schedule, Terminals & SkyBus

Melbourne Airport (MEL) is the main airport for Melbourne and the state of Victoria, about 22 to 25 km north-west of the Melbourne CBD in the Tullamarine area. It is Australia's second-busiest airport and a hub for Qantas, Virgin Australia and Jetstar. All four terminals, T1 to T4, sit under one roof, so you can walk between them. The airport operates 24 hours a day with no curfew.

The Melbourne area also has Avalon Airport (AVV) and Essendon Fields Airport (MEB), so check which airport is on your booking. The terminal you need depends on whether you are flying internationally and which airline you are with.

Terminals and airlines at Melbourne Airport

Terminal 2 handles every international flight. The other three are domestic terminals. Assignments can change, so always check the terminal on your e-ticket.

T1 Domestic

Terminal 1 is used by Qantas for its domestic flights. Qantas international flights leave from the international terminal instead.

T2 International

Terminal 2 is the international terminal. Malaysian travellers will find Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air Malaysia here, along with these airlines:

T3 Domestic

Terminal 3 is used by Virgin Australia for its domestic flights, with check-in on the first floor. Some Virgin Australia flights occasionally leave from T4, but check-in stays at T3.

T4 Domestic

Terminal 4 serves the other domestic airlines:

  • Alliance Airlines
  • Jetstar
  • Link Airways
  • Rex

Jetstar's domestic flights use T4, while its international flights depart from T2.

Moving between terminals

Because the terminals are in one building, you walk between them. Allow 10 to 15 minutes between terminals, and at least 10 minutes from T1 to T4. After security, T4 can also be reached from T3.

Getting to and from Melbourne Airport

The CBD is roughly 22 to 25 km away. The express bus and taxis are the usual choices into the city. Fares are shown at the counter or in the app.

SkyBus

SkyBus is the airport express bus. It stops at T1, T2 and T4 on the ground level, with ticket booths in T1 and T2. The trip to Melbourne City takes about 30 to 45 minutes, and SkyBus runs 24/7, with services to the city, St Kilda and Frankston.

Taxi

Taxi ranks are on the ground floor outside T1, between T2 and T3, and at T4. The ride to the city takes around 30 to 35 minutes, depending on traffic.

Rideshare

Dedicated rideshare pick-up and drop-off areas serve all terminals.

Public bus

Public buses leave from the ground floor of the Transport Hub near T4 and take around 70 minutes. You need a myki card to ride.

Car rental

Rental desks are across the forecourt from T2. By car, the CBD is less than 25 minutes away via the Tullamarine Freeway, and tolls may apply.

Road works around the terminals

Road works are under way around the terminals, bringing temporary detours, lane closures and changed car park access. The airport asks travellers to allow up to 60 minutes extra and suggests the T4 pick-up area to avoid congestion at T1 to T3.

Parking at Melbourne Airport

Short-stay At Terminal car parks serve T1, T2 and T3, and a separate At Terminal car park serves T4. For longer trips there is Long Term, Premium and Valet parking, including Qantas Valet and Virgin Valet. Drop-off zones are out the front of T1, T2 and T3, and on level 1 of the T4 car park. Rates are set by the airport, so check them before you go.

Facilities at Melbourne Airport

Here is what you will find across the four terminals, starting with what travellers ask about most.

Lounges

The international lounges in T2 are all after security: the Qantas First and Business lounges, the Emirates Lounge, the Singapore Airlines SilverKris Lounge, the Air New Zealand Lounge, the Marhaba Lounge, the Plaza Premium Lounge and the AMEX Lounge. On the domestic side, Qantas has a lounge in T1, Virgin Australia on the T3 mezzanine and Rex in T4. Entry depends on your ticket, membership or a paid pass.

Terminal layout

In T2, check-in and departures are on the first floor, and arrivals and baggage reclaim are on the ground floor. T1 has check-in and security on the first floor and baggage reclaim on the ground floor. In T3, Virgin Australia check-in is on the first floor and security on the mezzanine. T4 has check-in and bag drop on the ground floor, security on the first floor and a shared departures lounge where gates appear about 30 minutes before the flight.

Food and drink

Every terminal has places to eat before and after security. T4 has a food court after security.

Duty free shopping

Duty free is in T2 on departure, after passport control, and on arrival. You can also order duty free online and collect it at the airport. The Tourist Refund Scheme desk is just after passport control in T2.

Smoking areas

Smoking and vaping are not allowed inside the terminals. There are a few designated smoking areas outside, including one outside T1 on level 1, and none for transit passengers.

Luggage storage

Smartcarte baggage storage is on the ground floor of T2. Public lockers are on the ground floor of the At Terminal T4 car park.

Prayer rooms

Two multi-faith prayer rooms are open 24/7: one on the ground floor between T2 and T3, and one in T2 after security. A chaplaincy office is on Level 2 of T2.

Money, Wi-Fi and charging

ATMs are spread throughout the airport. Prosegur currency exchange is in T2 before and after security and in T2 arrivals, and T1 and T3/T4 also have Prosegur outlets or ATMs. Free Wi-Fi covers the terminals and car parks, and phone charging stations are in both the international and domestic terminals.

Showers

Showers are in T2 departures, before and after security. Bring your own towel, as there is no towel hire.

Families and accessibility

Baby change and parents rooms are in every terminal, and Changing Places adult change facilities are in T1, T2, T3 and T4. Free wheelchairs are available through your airline.

Tips for departing and arriving at Melbourne Airport

Melbourne Airport asks travellers to check with their airline for the best time to arrive. As a guide, Qantas advises at least 2 hours before an international flight and at least 60 minutes before a domestic one. Add extra time while the road works continue.

On arrival from Malaysia you clear Australian immigration and customs in T2 before reaching the arrivals hall. Check the current entry requirements and what you need to declare before you fly. For updates on the day, use the Traveloka flight status page.
