What Guests Say About Their Stay

We read the reviews and were intrigued. We stayed in winter, and it is cold in Bothwell. It would have been much more inviting if the hosts had the heater running prior to our arrival, but once the property warmed up after a few minutes the shock of how cold it was faded away. We stayed in the 1837 cottage. The accommodation is rustic, eclectically furnished and decorated, and gives an appreciation of life in times gone by. If you are after elegant, refined and well finished accommodation this property is not for you, however if you enjoy history that you can touch and feel the cottage is adorable (we were the latter). Would definitely stay here again but you need to accept the accommodation for what it is - a lower class colonial piece of history.

This is a great place to stay. So much history. The library is amazing. The cottage was built in the mid 1800’s. So it’s vey old. But certainly worth staying. Even electric blankets on the beds.

Beautiful old building, nice and cosy. Well equipped kitchen and comfortable bed. Spotlessly clean. Would stay again.

Not haunted lol. I will be honest i went here thinking for sure we would get some sort of spiritual presence but the was nothing. Bathroom tap needs to be changed its not practical. House is super quiet! Front room door when closed ceases and we struggled to open it and get out. Very comfortable in winter but you would freeze if the power went out. Had cute rabbits in the back yard. Loved the old buildings. Clean and felt homely. Was a great experience to stay and explore. There was a beer left in the frige and milk supplied was covered in dust lol. We only stayed for one night

This is a very large property (the "Storekeeper's House" has enough bedding for up to 12 people), and being an historic building is full of character in an interesting little town. However, the ageing nature of the property lets it down, too - there is some wear and tear - and not every corner of the place felt clean. In the Storekeeper's House there is also just a single bathroom (not counting the outdoor toilet which was out of order), which somewhat undermines the large sleeping capacity. Also, there was some contradictory communication prior to arrival which lead to confusion at check-in, though quickly resolved.

I have been using HomeAway for many years without a problem, but this time it was very different. I thought I had booked a small apartment in this historic building with modern furnishings as photographed. Instead I was given the four bedroom house, with heavy antique furniture, which may be great for a group of friends, but far too big for a couple. While it was interesting to stay in a very old building in a lovely old town, there were a number of issues which spoilt our enjoyment of the building. The appliances in the kitchen needed a good clean; the laundry was not available for use; the garden and grounds were unkempt; there was no wifi and a text to the owner about this went unanswered. Guests should be made aware that the pub has the only restaurant in town and is only open Fri - Sun. Guests should also be aware the only bathroom is up a steep flight of stairs. (There was also an issue with evidence of a rodent in the bathroom vanity but this may have been a once off.) Overall, I guess I expected something better for close to $200 a night.

Did not arrive late, but key was in a coded box of which we did receive a telephone call to give us that code if we arrived late. Got key then had no idea where the actual accommodation was, tried the small cottage where the key was in coded box, that was not it. Walked around the large old building and found the key opened a back door, once inside no information that we had the whole place to ourselves, rang the contact number to clarify what the go was, informed it is all ours, no one else staying. Milk in fridge was 2 months out of date. Building had a cold feeling, not a nice feeling. This accommodation did not work for us.

The town is lovely and we enjoyed walking around and viewing the heritage houses. House itself is basic and nice to experience the heritage building, however other residents staying in the main house were very noisy and as an old property there are many gaps in doors etc so it felt like we were in their dinning room with them until they finally fell asleep. Tried to call and text owner before arrival as we didn't have access to our emails at the time (a common problem in Tasmania but not a big one), and had no response, lucky found a wifi hot spot in a cafe to access old emails. But still no response to text message from owner. Accidentally left our charger at the property so contacted owner via website to see if we could collect from somewhere on property, and as had no luck with calling or texting previously tried emailing via their website. Again no response. I'm not sure who manages the property however the ways to contact owner does not seem to get through to anyone. The books left to read were great giving an inside into the history of the town. The park across the road has a bbq which was great to use for our pre bought dinner. Room itself was basic but had what we needed. We stayed in the cottage attached to main property.

The 1837 cottage is old on the outside, but renovated with modern comforts inside. 2 big bedrooms, one with sitting room with TV, Lounge is comfy - Great to stay for upto 5 people. Worth playing Ratho Farm golf course, while the Pub is only a 5 min walk. Petrol in town was cheaper than Hobart! Fill up.

A glimpse of what a 1838 cottage would have been like. Between quaint and ramshackle. The main entry door had a clear plastic covering allowing you to see the gaps between the boards but stopped the drafts. No need for the discomforts of the past though. Bathroom is very modern (apart from sloping ceiling which limits standing room). Rainfall shower with lovely hot water, heater supplied and even a heated towell rack. House has a big aircon, beds have electric blankets. All very cozy. A lovely overnight stop.
