the room I was put in stank. the ceiling was covered in browning water marks that looked like there was a significant leak from above. I was woken to the sound of a heavy drip in the room, right next to my luggage. when I checked out the member of staff tried to charge me for breakfast even though my booking states it is included. when I argued my case he got visibly annoyed and walked off saying "you're done here". i couldn't believe the state of the room, but there was no chance to speak to the staff in the morning after the altercation over double breakfast charge.

I’m one of those who never complains, however, I could feel every spring through what’s left of the mattress. No hot water for a 9am shower? Tiles falling off/loose in the dated bathroom. 11am check out sounded great, but cleaners cleaning rooms from 7:45am so what’s the point? Good air con that was the only positive. Sadly this is old, not cheap and certainly never been 4 stars.

Truth is, this hotel probably deserves most of the hilariously bad reviews. The rooms all seems to be in various stages of collapse - some have only hot water, others have only cold. Some have broken or barely functioning air conditioning. Half the power sockets are broken/ a death risk. The place was renovated very shoddily about 25 years ago and it’s clear the owner can’t or won’t pay to get it fixed. However, I got a very good deal on one of the premium rooms, the bed was great, the location perfect for my visit and as a result would be very happy to stay again for that sort of price..

Stayed here for our honeymoon, was quite skeptical after seeing some bad reviews kn the lead up but our stay was comfortable and our room was spacious and clean. My husband tried the English breakfast which he said was okay (smaller than expected). The staff were welcoming. The only downside we found was it was noisy where we were staying on the bottom floor as we were close to the restaurant and you could constantly hear other guests.

This property has had a bunch of negative reviews so I thought it would be worth adding my experience. Overall it is good. Our room was the "garden suite". It was a large room with a comfortable enough bed, some old and battered armchairs (think shabby chic). The bathroom was large. Checkin was delayed because the maintenance person hadn't fixed the shower that the previous guests had reported as being faulty. Despite this he still didn't fix it properly as it was either dangerously hot or cool. Reported to management who promised to get the mixer replaced but they didn't do it in the week i was staying there. So to sum up. It is a quaint building, well located and in a safe area. Staff really don't care about the guests and service is poor so if something goes wrong it is unlikely they will deal with it.

Avoid - pretty shocked at the experience really. Sadly this hotel needs some serious work before guests can have a safe and comfortable stay. We hired two rooms for two nights. Requested on the original booking a double and a twin, but given two doubles. No apology for their mistake and they made up a sofa bed in one of the double rooms, which was incredibly uncomfortable and not what we paid for. The actual bed in the other room had a reasonably comfortable mattress, albeit on a plyboard base held together with silver duct tape and sharp exposed metal brackets. Working air conditioning unit on the wall had no grill on top exposing internal moving parts. Curtains hanging off rail and pretty threadbare. Both bathrooms were not clean and shower pole over bath not fixed to the wall. Just a trickle on full and hence not enough water to shower. The room would not lock, which I am pleased to say they did fix the same day. TV did actually work but limited channels and no BBC channels for example. It’s such a shame, as the hotel has potential, but they need to renovate it before letting out rooms. We decided to eat elsewhere, so cannot comment on food.

Staff on reception very helpful. Room was poor. Electric sockets didn't work, air con had to be controlled by switch on wall under dressing table hence move the furniture in order to get on hands and knees to reach switch. Carpets very dated. Bathroom dated, shower was ok if you were 4 foot tall but pressure was very poor..part of toilet roll holder on wall, unsure where the rest was, never found it! Climbed 87 stairs to room on 4th floor...luckily only had light bag and small case. Elderly people would really struggle. Goldfish in reception kept in tall thin vase which I feel is cruel.
