Your Travel Guide to Langkawi as a Malaysian Traveler

How to Get to Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur and Major Malaysian Cities

Traveling to Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur and other major Malaysian cities is convenient, with several transport options available. The quickest way is by air. Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, and Batik Air operate frequent flights from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) to Langkawi International Airport (LGK). The flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, with fares often starting from around MYR 150-300 for a one-way ticket, depending on booking time and airline. Booking your flight in advance is recommended for better prices.

For those who prefer a more scenic and potentially budget-friendly journey, traveling by bus is an option, though it involves a ferry transfer. You can take a bus from Kuala Lumpur's TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) to Kuala Perlis or Penang. From Kuala Perlis, it's a short bus or taxi ride to the ferry terminal for a 1.5-hour ferry crossing to Langkawi. From Penang, the ferry also takes around 2-3 hours. Bus fares typically range from MYR 40-70, and ferry tickets are around MYR 20-30.

Driving to Langkawi is also feasible for those who enjoy road trips. You would drive north towards Perlis or Butterworth (Penang), then take a ferry that accommodates vehicles. The drive from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Perlis is about 5-6 hours, covering approximately 500 kilometers. Toll charges along the North-South Expressway would add roughly MYR 50-70 for a round trip. Once on the island, having your own vehicle offers great flexibility for exploration.

Best Time to Visit Langkawi

Langkawi enjoys a tropical climate year-round, but the best time to visit for most Malaysian travelers is during the dry season, which typically runs from December to February. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity and minimal rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities like beach hopping, island tours, and exploring the natural landscapes. The sea is generally calmer, perfect for water sports and boat trips.

The shoulder seasons, from March to May and September to November, can also be pleasant. While there might be occasional rain showers, they are usually brief and followed by sunshine. September and October can see more frequent rain as the northeast monsoon begins to wane, but you might find fewer crowds and potentially better deals on accommodation and flights. The period from June to August is considered the wetter season, with higher humidity and more consistent rainfall, though it rarely rains all day.

For travelers looking to avoid the peak tourist crowds and potentially find more affordable rates, visiting during the off-peak season (generally June to August and parts of September/October) can be a good strategy. Despite the possibility of rain, Langkawi remains beautiful, and many attractions are still fully operational. The island’s lush greenery is particularly vibrant after the rains.

Food and Dining Near Langkawi — What Malaysian Travelers Must Try

Langkawi offers a culinary journey that reflects the diverse flavors of Malaysian cuisine, with plenty of halal options readily available. A characteristic Malaysian breakfast or supper is Roti Canai, a flaky flatbread often served with dhal or curry. You can find excellent versions at local mamak stalls and restaurants throughout Kuah.

No trip to Malaysia is complete without trying Nasi Lemak, the national dish. This fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf, served with spicy sambal, anchovies, peanuts, and a hard-boiled egg, is a staple. Many restaurants in Langkawi serve it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Another must-try is Char Kway Teow, a stir-fried flat rice noodle dish with prawns, cockles, bean sprouts, and chives, known for its smoky 'wok hei' flavor.

For seafood lovers, Langkawi’s coastal location means fresh catches are abundant. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid, often marinated in local spices, are a delight. Laksa, a spicy noodle soup, comes in various regional styles, and Langkawi offers its own delicious interpretations. Don't forget to sample Satay, marinated and grilled skewers of chicken or beef, served with a rich peanut sauce. These dishes are widely available at local eateries and food courts, ensuring a delicious and authentic experience for all.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Langkawi

Langkawi is a Muslim-majority island, so dressing modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or more traditional areas, is appreciated. While beachwear is common at resorts and beaches, covering shoulders and knees when out and about in towns like Kuah is advisable. Malaysians are generally friendly and welcoming, and showing respect for local customs will enhance your interactions.

Safety in Langkawi is generally high, with low crime rates. However, like anywhere, it's wise to take standard precautions: be aware of your surroundings, secure your valuables, and avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. For any emergencies, the national emergency number is 999, which connects you to police, ambulance, and fire services.

For seamless travel, having a few essential apps on your smartphone is highly recommended. Grab is indispensable for e-hailing transportation, offering convenient rides across the island. Touch 'n Go eWallet is useful for various payments, including parking and some retail transactions. MySejahtera, the government's contact tracing app, may still be useful for checking into certain venues. Having these apps will make navigating Langkawi much smoother.

The Adya hotel is 3km from the ferry terminal. Most staff do not speak english so communication difficult. Several things broken in room, ac leaking, found a dead bat on the floor which reinforces the cleaning issues. I seen someone else commneted about bats in the room and thoight it obsurd but then experienced it also. Obviously they get in when windows and doors are left open. Reception staff never acknowlege you after checking in and totally ignore your presence when passing thereafter. Things happen slowly if at all in this aging hotel that is over due a refurbishment. Pool is nice although few sunbeds for the 200+ rooms. Towels were often not available around the pool and sunbeds didnt have materass making them uncomfortable. Many local restaurants nearby and a mall within walking distance.

The staff were excellent—friendly, courteous, and very helpful. The Jelapeng restaurant’s à la carte menu was excellent. The dishes were flavorful and consistently served hot, clearly prepared fresh upon ordering. Breakfast was fresh, but the variety was limited. It would be great to have more options. For example, the fruits were consistently only watermelon and pineapple. A handheld bidet spray is not available in the toilet. Instead, there is a water hose with a wall-mounted valve. For guests who do not use toilet paper, managing the water flow after use can be challenging.

I book my accommodation when travelling predominantly for the pool first and the room second. I love a good pool as that’s where I spend most of my time. Had I known this was a Muslim accommodation I would not have stayed. Nothing against the religion but the call to prayer constantly is anything but relaxing. The staff are not friendly. Not one smile the whole time I was there. Went up to my level and the hall carpets were very dirty and three days later still not vacuumed. The online photos of the two beautiful pools are years old and both pools were so green it was hygienically Impossible to use them. When I questioned the cleanliness multiple times I was told it was from the heat and rain (we all know that’s a big fat lie) and they would put chlorine in. That was no help. The room smelled like hospital air fresher. It was stomach churning. I opened the balcony door to the heat and went to the local market to get some lemongrass oil and a spray bottle to spray around the room. It’s in the most impoverished part of the island which I did not know but although the poverty was confronting it was also beautiful to see the locals so happy and friendly. Like I said, I love a good pool and I am in fact at the pool at my new accommodation writing this review because I checked out of the awful place early and rebooked at the amazing Century Langkasuka with its huge immaculately clean pool over looking the ocean. Same hot weather, same rain!! Clean beautiful pool. Massage 100%

I had the pleasure of staying here for 3 night's and I must say it was one of the best stays that I have had in Malaysia. All the staff were amazing, attentive, always smiling and went the extra mile to make everyone feel comfortable. I am already planning a return trip this time with my family. Great hotel, amazing staff and outstanding views from the higher floors where I was located. A very eclectic mix of guests who greeted one another and were always smiling. Keep up the good work all at the hotel.

First trip to Langkawi and were looking for a property within walking distance to restaurants. Didnt realize when we booked that it was a dry hotel (no alcohol). Rooms were a good size and relatively comfortable but the carpets were very dirty! Had to extend our stay by 1 day and had an unpleasant experince when checking out as we were charged more than quoted. My fault for not taking a picture of the price the clerk wrote down. Live and learn.
