Masjid Tanah is one of the mukim situated in Alor Gajah District in Malacca. The name Masjid Tanah originates from a mosque (masjid) built from soil (tanah) in around 1800.The town has been inhibited starting from a small village and has become one of the largest towns in Malacca. In the late-1990s, the value of real estate in Masjid Tanah has risen when the government decided to build an oil refinery owned by Petronas at Sungai Udang near the town. Masjid Tanah is located in Alor Gajah which is very near to Negeri Sembilan. Hence, most of people live here originate from Negeri Sembilan and have the accent of Negeri Sembilan or Minang and shared the same culture of adat perpatih. Among a noted and honourable man who comes from this town is Datuk Abu Seman Yusop which is the former Malaysian Deputy of Home Minister from 2009 to 2013.

How to Get There

From Kuala Lumpur city centre, you can take North-South highway which takes 1 hour and 30 minutes to Masjid Tanah. For visitors from Johor Bahru or Singapore also can follow North-South Highway and exit at Malacca. Otherwise, you can also take a bus into the town and commute via taxi and short distance walking. There are many express buses commuting from most major cities in Malaysia and Singapore. Transnational is an example and the bus fare is about RM 30 to RM40. The best way to travel around the town of Malacca is by driving.

Al-Khawarizmi Astronomy Complex

Located around 14 minutes away from Masjid Tanah, it is a place to study and explore the mystery of Universe and it is an effort from Melaka State Government. The purpose of this complex is to generate public awareness of the importance of astronomy as well as support the growth of astronomy via tourism activities. This complex is named after well-known astronomer called Abdullah Muhammad Ibn Musa or Al-Khawarizmi. There are exciting activities in the Observatory and the Planetarium where you can experience the Night Sky Observation and 3D and many other interesting activities. The entrance fee is RM 1.00 per entry and movie tickets are sold at separate cost range between RM 1 to RM3. Visitors are required to take note that the complex is managed by Muslim scholars where descent dress code is advisable.

Tanjung Bidara Beach is one of the beaches on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia and has easy access to famous attractions. Eventhough the water is slightly murky, many people still come for its white soft sandy beach.
