Alor Gajah was one of the forest areas believed to be the routes for the wild elephants. It was sourced that a herd of wild elephants that were led by a white elephant were seen walking in groups following a channel in the river. Hence, the name Alor Gajah defines the word ‘alor’ which means channel while the word ‘gajah’ means elephant. In the olden days, elephants are powerful animals being trained for war. Elephants are also being kept to be given as a token when any royal families exchanging gift.

Alor Gajah is a district in Malacca, Malaysia. It is located in the north part of Malacca about 25 km from the Malacca town. Alor Gajah district consists of 39 sub-districts, namely Alor Gajah town, Air Pa’abas, Belimbing, Beringin, Brisu, Durian Tunggal, Gadek, Kelemak, Kemuning, Kuala Linggi, Kuala Sungai Baru, Lendu, Machap, Masjid Tanah, Melaka Pindah, Melekek, Padang Sebang, Parit Melana, Pegoh, Pulau Sebang, Ramuan Cina Besar, Ramuan Cina Kecil, Rembia, Sungai Baru Hilir, Sungai Baru Tengah, Sungai Baru Ulu, Sungai Buluh, Sungai Petai, Sungai Siput, Taboh Naning, Tanjung Rimau and Tebong.

How to Get There

By Plane

There are flights to Malacca provided by Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia. From the airport, guests may hail up a taxi to Alor Gajah.

By Car

People driving from Kuala Lumpur may drive through the North-South Expressway (PLUS) exiting at Simpang Ampat exit before continuing the journey towards Alor Gajah.

By Bus

The express bus terminal is located at Jalan Dato Mohd Zin, Alor Gajah. Among the available express bus services are Konsortium Express, Cepat & Cekap Express, Delima Expressand many more.

Tourist Attractions

Formal events or any community programmes usually takes place at the Dataran Keris also known as Dataran Alor Gajah or Alor Gajah Square located in the middle of Alor Gajah town. There is a large keris structure at the centre of the open field that attracted visitors for a photo spot. Keris is a traditional Malay dagger used for fighting.

Another interesting place for sightseeing in Alor Gajah is the Cape Rachado Lighthouse located at Tanjung Tuan. The lighthouse was built as a control tower for the Straits of Malacca.

Visitors may also spend time at beautiful beaches in Alor Gajah such as Pengkalan Balak Beach, Tanjung Bidara Beach and Tanjung Tuan Beach. It is also interesting to visit the Al-Khawarizmi Astronomy Complex in Tanjung Bidara and walk around the museum and the observatory tower.

Local famous dish of Alor Gajah is its Kueh Udang or Prawn Fritters at Menggong Market Food Court. The succulent prawn are mixed up in a batter together with ingredients such as sliced shallots and chives before been deep fried until golden brown. These prawn fritters are served either with homemade chilli sauce or peanut sauce.
