According to history, there was a river in Kulai where there are many types of fishes and also countless turtle and tortoise as well as other sea creatures. During the heavy rain at the river before Chinese New Year, river levels can be as high as five to six feet. The villagers who live near the river must move to higher area and after the rain, the villagers would clean up the house. It was found that hundreds of tortoise climb toward the shore then the villagers would loudly shout “tortoise” and “Turtle” Later, because “turtle come” in Mandarin word hard to pronounce and villagers eventually call Kulai. The river also has been changed to the name Kulai River.
The Kulai District is a district in the state of Johor which covers Kulai Town, Ayer Bemban, Bandar Putra Kulai, Bukit Batu, Indahpura, Kangkar Pulai, Kelapa Sawit, Saleng, Sedenak, Seelong, Senai and Sengkang and Taman Putri.
