About

The Segamat District is the northern district of Johor state with Negeri Sembilan on the west border and Pahang on the north border. From the capital district of Johor Bahru, you will need to travel as far as 172 kilometres to reach this district. Due to its strategic placement between Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru, Segamat has enjoyed fast growth in agricultural aspects with oil palm and rubber being its main products. It is equally famous for its delicious durians too, which lead to the district to develop such a bold welcoming statement to its visitors: Welcome to Segamat - The Land of the King of Fruits. The town is the fifth biggest in Johor with residents amounting up to 80,000 people, being a melting pot of old and new cultures.

The story behind the district’s name can be traced back to 1511 when Bendahara Tepok and his men were retreating to Johor after the fall of Melaka due to the Portuguese invasion by Alfonso de Albuquerque. The Bendahara stopped by the river in the area to rest and upon drinking the water from the river, he exclaimed “Segar amat!” which translates to “Very fresh!” which evolved to Segamat over time. However, Segamat name is only applied to the river and the area was still known as Rantau Panjang till they adopted Segamat as the district’s official name in the turn of the 20th century.

How to Get There

From Kuala Lumpur International Airport, you can take flights such as Malaysia Airlines, Air Asia or Malindo to Senai International Airport in Kulai, Johor. From there, you can take a taxi or bus to go to the bus terminal of Larkin and board the KKKL Express or S&S International Express buses for a direct trip to Segamat which will take about three to three and a half hours.

Another option is to go by by train – from KL Sentral, you can take the ETS coach to Gemas and from Gemas, take the southbound intercity train to Segamat. Four coaches are prepared daily for southbound trains.

Tourist Attractions

Segamat City Center

Walking around the town itself is enough to enjoy Segamat. There are plenty of good eateries around town such as kopitiams selling coffees that are really excellent and establishment selling good breakfast, char koey teow and roti canai such as Warung Daud and Siam Traffic Light Restaurant. The only shopping mall inside the city, One Segamat Shopping Mall is also a well-known spot. In addition to that, another famous attraction inside the city is the Segamat Square. Erected in 1996, it served as the main venue for Johor's state level celebration of the country’s Independence Day celebration twice, once in 1995 and 2005. As a result, the square was renovated beautifully, housing the clock tower and a durian replica that makes Segamat Square the landmark of Segamat.

Mount Ophir

If you long for an enjoyable weekend getaway far from the hustles and bustles of the town, head down to Mount Ophir and Bekok Waterfall, which are a 45 minute drive from town. It is a great place for picnicking with family and to relax yourself with the wonders of nature. For ones who crave for a challenge, Mount Ophir is also available to hike and water rafting with packages available including guide ranging from seventy ringgits up to a hundred and fifty ringgits which are very affordable.
