Overview of The Chow Kit - An Ormond Hotel

Nestled at the crossroads of heritage and contemporary design, The Chow Kit - An Ormond Hotel is a 4-star boutique property that captures the raw energy and cultural richness of one of Kuala Lumpur's most storied neighbourhoods. Standing at 1012 Jalan Sultan Ismail, on the corner where Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman meets the bustling Chow Kit district, this 113-room hotel invites travellers to experience a side of KL that most tourists never discover — one steeped in wet-market traditions, multicultural street life, and generations of culinary heritage passed down through spoken recipes.

Conceptualised by the Ormond Group and brought to life by Brooklyn-based design practice Studio Tack — their very first project in Asia — The Chow Kit draws inspiration from the neighbourhood's colourful past. The interiors pay homage to the late-night revelry that once defined Chow Kit's alleys and bars during the 1970s and 1980s, blending brass accents, vintage-inspired fixtures, and locally sourced materials into a design language the hotel calls "simplified luxury." Curated artworks from private collections and commissioned pieces by Malaysian and Southeast Asian artists line the corridors and communal spaces, transforming the property into a living gallery that celebrates the region's creative spirit.

What sets The Chow Kit - An Ormond Hotel apart from the polished tower hotels of Bukit Bintang is its deliberate sense of place. Rather than shielding guests from the neighbourhood, the hotel embraces it — from the warm timber floors in every room to the pan-Malaysian menu in the restaurant downstairs, every detail is rooted in the community outside its doors. Whether you are a first-time visitor to Kuala Lumpur or a seasoned traveller seeking something beyond the usual, The Chow Kit offers a genuinely immersive base from which to explore one of the city's most authentic corners.

Room Types at The Chow Kit - An Ormond Hotel

With 86 rooms and 27 suites spread across the property, The Chow Kit offers accommodation categories that range from compact and cleverly designed to spaciously indulgent. Every room features warm timber flooring, floor-to-ceiling windows, luxury bed linen, a Smart TV with satellite channels, free high-speed WiFi, and an ensuite bathroom fitted with a rain shower and bespoke organic toiletries by Jeanie Botanicals. The room names themselves nod to the area's colourful history — a thoughtful touch that extends the storytelling from the lobby right into your private quarters.

The Den

Named after the gambling dens that once peppered the Chow Kit neighbourhood, The Den is the hotel's most compact room at 15 sqm (approximately 160 sqft), fitted with a comfortable queen-sized bed. Maximum occupancy is two adults, making it an ideal choice for solo travellers or couples who plan to spend most of their time exploring the city and need a well-appointed room to return to. Despite its intimate proportions, the space feels open and airy thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the room with natural light. Timber floors, a rain shower, and the signature Jeanie Botanicals toiletries ensure the experience still feels distinctly boutique. A flat-screen Smart TV, a seating area, and a hairdryer complete the essentials for a fuss-free stay.

The King Den

Stepping up in size, The King Den offers 19 sqm (approximately 200 sqft) of living space, furnished with either a king-sized bed or twin beds depending on your preference. This flexibility makes the King Den a popular choice for both couples and friends travelling together. The room accommodates up to two adults and one infant. Like all rooms at The Chow Kit, it features the same signature timber floors, floor-to-ceiling windows, luxury linen, Smart TV, and an ensuite bathroom with a rain shower and organic toiletries. The additional floor space allows for a more generous seating area, and the textured windows in some configurations face a soft lightwell, creating a calm, cocooning atmosphere that contrasts beautifully with the vibrant street energy outside.

The Suite Collection

For guests who desire more space and a sense of occasion, The Chow Kit - An Ormond Hotel offers a collection of suites, each named using local Hokkien dialect terms that reflect the neighbourhood's heritage. The Towkay Suite, meaning "The Boss Suite," spans approximately 22 sqm (240 sqft) and features a king-sized bed alongside a dedicated lounge area with a sofa, tea table, and two single-seater armchairs. A multifunctional dressing area doubles as an open wardrobe, with a mini-fridge and in-room safe neatly integrated below the dressing table.

The hotel's most generous accommodation is The Towkay Soh Suite — "The Boss Lady Suite" — which stretches across 38 sqm (approximately 409 sqft) with a luxurious king-sized bed (or twins upon request) and a fully separate living area with plush seating. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame views of the Kuala Lumpur skyline, and the ensuite bathroom is the largest in the property, complete with a rain shower and the full range of luxury organic toiletries. With room for up to two adults and one infant, this suite is ideally suited for guests celebrating a special occasion or those who simply prefer the comfort of additional space during their stay.

Facilities and Amenities

The Chow Kit - An Ormond Hotel channels its energy into doing fewer things exceptionally well rather than offering an exhaustive list of generic facilities. The hotel does not feature a swimming pool or gymnasium — a deliberate choice that reflects its boutique philosophy and compact urban footprint. Instead, the property focuses on design-led communal spaces, attentive personal service, and the kind of thoughtful touches that make a stay memorable.

Free high-speed WiFi is available throughout the entire property, from the guest rooms to the ground-floor restaurant and bar. A 24-hour front desk is staffed by a multilingual team who can assist with luggage storage, local recommendations, and arranging transport. The hotel is equipped with a lift for easy access to all floors. Parking is available on-site through a valet service, with rates starting from approximately RM 3 per hour or around RM 15 per day — though spaces can be limited during peak periods and weekends, so arriving early or arranging parking in advance is advisable.

The hotel's Art Programme is a standout feature that many guests discover only upon arrival. Carefully curated artworks are displayed throughout the corridors and public areas, selected from private collections and commissioned from emerging and established artists across Malaysia and Southeast Asia. This transforms the property into a gallery of sorts, adding layers of visual storytelling that complement the heritage-inspired interiors designed by Studio Tack.

Location and Getting There

The Chow Kit - An Ormond Hotel sits at the intersection of Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, placing guests at the very heart of one of Kuala Lumpur's most culturally vibrant districts. The Chow Kit neighbourhood is famous for its sprawling wet market — the largest in KL — where vendors sell everything from fresh seafood and tropical fruits to textiles and household goods. Stepping outside the hotel doors, you are immediately immersed in the authentic rhythm of daily life in the capital.

The nearest rail connection is Medan Tuanku Monorail station, located just a four- to five-minute walk from the hotel entrance. From Medan Tuanku, the KL Monorail connects directly to key destinations including Bukit Bintang (two stops away) for shopping and nightlife, and KL Sentral for connections to the KLIA Ekspres airport rail link and the broader Klang Valley rail network. Guests can also reach the Petronas Twin Towers and KLCC within a short monorail ride or approximately 2.5 kilometres by road.

The department store SOGO Kuala Lumpur is within a five-minute drive or a pleasant walk along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. Other nearby landmarks include Merdeka Square, Chinatown (Petaling Street), and the National Textile Museum, all reachable within minutes by ride-hailing services such as Grab. For travellers arriving by air, the journey from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) or KLIA2 takes approximately one hour by road, depending on traffic conditions, or around 30 minutes via the KLIA Ekspres train to KL Sentral followed by a short monorail ride or taxi.

Dining at The Chow Kit - An Ormond Hotel

The hotel's signature dining venue is The Chow Kit Kitchen & Bar, an open-plan restaurant and bar that serves as the social heart of the property. Described by the hotel as "a space where strangers become friends and friends become family over a shared meal," the Kitchen & Bar embodies the Malaysian open-house tradition in both its design and spirit. The space is warm and inviting, with communal seating that encourages conversation alongside more intimate corners for quieter meals.

The menu celebrates pan-Malaysian cuisine, with dishes crafted from recipes passed down through generations of home cooks. The emphasis is on honest flavours and locally sourced produce, drawing from culinary traditions across the north and south of the peninsula as well as the multicultural influences — Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Indonesian — that define KL's food scene. The restaurant has also introduced Ketam, a crab-focused concept showcasing fresh mud crabs in dishes such as Mango Pai Tee, Curry Croquette, Wok-Hei Fried Rice, and Spicy Linguine with crab meat.

Breakfast is served cooked to order, with service available from approximately 6:30 AM to 10:00 AM on weekdays and 7:00 AM to 10:30 AM on weekends. Guests who book a room inclusive of breakfast will find it a rewarding start to the day; those on room-only rates can add breakfast for approximately RM 35 per adult. The Kitchen & Bar remains open daily until around 10:30 PM, making it a convenient option for dinner as well.

Beyond the hotel's own restaurant, the Chow Kit neighbourhood itself is one of KL's greatest dining destinations. The famous Chow Kit Market, open from early morning, offers an extraordinary array of street food — from fragrant nasi lemak and smoky satay to charcoal-toasted bread with kaya and butter paired with strong local kopi. The surrounding streets are lined with Malay, Indonesian, and Indian eateries, many of which have been serving the same recipes for decades. The hotel's front desk can arrange guided walking and foodie tours of the neighbourhood for guests who wish to explore with a local guide.

Why Stay at The Chow Kit - An Ormond Hotel

Authentic neighbourhood immersion. Unlike the glass-tower hotels clustered along Bukit Bintang, The Chow Kit - An Ormond Hotel places you in the thick of a real, working Kuala Lumpur neighbourhood. The wet market, the street hawkers, the textile stalls — it is all on your doorstep, offering the kind of cultural richness that cannot be replicated in a manicured hotel district. For travellers who value experience over convention, this location is unmatched.

Design with substance. The interiors by Studio Tack are not simply beautiful — they tell a story. Every material, every brass fitting, every curated artwork connects back to the heritage of the Chow Kit district and the broader Malaysian cultural narrative. The result is a hotel that feels considered and intentional in a way that larger chain properties rarely achieve. Staying here feels like inhabiting a carefully crafted world rather than just occupying a room.

Outstanding food, both inside and out. The Chow Kit Kitchen & Bar has earned a loyal following for its pan-Malaysian menu, and the neighbourhood beyond the hotel doors is one of the best street-food destinations in the entire city. Few hotels in Kuala Lumpur can offer this combination of quality on-site dining and world-class hawker food within walking distance.

Excellent connectivity. Despite its neighbourhood charm, The Chow Kit is far from isolated. Medan Tuanku Monorail station is a five-minute walk away, providing fast connections to KLCC, Bukit Bintang, and KL Sentral. Major landmarks, shopping centres, and transport hubs are all within easy reach, making the hotel a practical base for both leisure and business travellers.

Boutique scale and personal service. With just 113 rooms, The Chow Kit maintains the intimate atmosphere and attentive service that define the best boutique hotels. The multilingual front-desk team is knowledgeable about the local area and genuinely invested in helping guests make the most of their stay, from recommending the best nasi kandar stall to arranging neighbourhood walking tours.

Tips for Booking The Chow Kit - An Ormond Hotel

Choose your room category carefully. If you are visiting Kuala Lumpur primarily for sightseeing and plan to be out most of the day, The Den offers everything you need at the most accessible rate. However, if you value space to unwind after a day of exploring, upgrading to The King Den or one of the suite categories is well worth considering — the Towkay Soh Suite, in particular, offers nearly three times the floor area of The Den and features sweeping skyline views that make returning to your room a highlight of the day.

Book a rate that includes breakfast. The cooked-to-order breakfast at The Chow Kit Kitchen & Bar is a genuine treat, featuring Malaysian-inspired dishes made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Including breakfast in your booking typically represents better value than adding it upon arrival, and it ensures you start each morning with a satisfying meal before heading out to explore. Weekday breakfast service begins at 6:30 AM, ideal for early risers or those with morning flights to catch.

Request a high-floor room with a view. When booking through Traveloka, consider noting a preference for a higher floor in your special requests. Rooms on upper levels benefit from more natural light and, in the suite categories, can reward you with views across the Kuala Lumpur cityscape. While room assignments are subject to availability, the front-desk team is known for accommodating requests whenever possible.

Plan your parking in advance. On-site valet parking is available at approximately RM 15 per day, but spaces are limited, particularly on weekends when the nearby market draws large crowds. If you are driving, arriving earlier in the day improves your chances of securing a spot. Alternatively, ride-hailing services like Grab are plentiful in the area and often prove more convenient for getting around central KL.

Check in early, check out late. Standard check-in at The Chow Kit is at 2:00 PM, with check-out at 12:00 PM (noon). If you arrive before check-in time, the front desk offers luggage storage so you can head straight out to explore the Chow Kit Market or grab a coffee at the Kitchen & Bar. For the best rates and room availability, booking through Traveloka in advance — particularly during off-peak periods such as weekday stays or outside major Malaysian public holidays — tends to offer the strongest value.

Beautiful hotel and great location. Unfortunately, the basic in room amenities were lacking. There is no tea/coffee/cups in the room. There were also no robes or slippers provided. Difficult to take a shower without flooding the floor of the bathroom due to the design. Additionally, there was only a shampoo/conditioner combo- So, if you require conditioning your hair best to bring separate. When we requested a kettle, etc it was provided for us. But, took a few requests to acquire cups etc. Finally, on short notice the friendly staff booked us an airport pick-up which was very kind. We were told we could pay by credit card for a fee. We elected to not exchange currency at the airport and wait for a better exchange rate. Unfortunately, on arrival to the hotel, the taxi driver informed us that he was unable to take cash. After some negotiation, the hotel agreed to pay the taxi driver for us and hold our USD as collateral. We appreciate it helping us but better communication on the front end might’ve prevented the incident.

It's about three stations away from the bustling Bukit Bintang area, and the monorail is just a 6-7 minute walk. The boutique hotel offers a unique stay with its blend of traditional charm and modern, cosmopolitan, yet cozy design. Thumbs up: When I brought in food from outside, the staff kindly offered me cutlery—such a thoughtful touch. It may seem small, but it made a big difference, allowing me to enjoy my meal more comfortably. The staff's attentiveness and kindness truly stood out.

Great hotel, lovely decor, very helpful staff & good location. However, comfort not so great as it was very difficult to sleep with motorbikes racing around outside in the early hours of the morning. Not sure if this is just a weekend thing! The restaurant was also closed all evening for a private event, & it would have been good if this had been communicated beforehand.

In terms of cleaning the rooms left a little to be desired and could be improved. In terms of service they were all fantastic🙂. And when it comes to the options of breakfast there wasn’t many but from the options that there were available they were all super nice and super delicious.

We spent 1 night at this hotel and have fallen in love with it. We definitely will stay here again in the future. We are sitting in the hotel’s restaurant right now. We checked out and knew we wanted to have lunch here before we left. The food & service is top notch. I am a retired Chef so I greatly appreciate good service & cuisine. Great job!!

The rooms need to be uograded. The actual room did not look like the ones we saw online during booking. It looked like a regular cheap hotel/motel.

I can comfortably say that The Chow Kit is my favourite hotel in Kuala Lumpur. Everything was just right. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone who appreciates minimal design codes with a touch of heritage.

Claudia was helpful and friendly at check-in. Room service took a while to deliver the dental kit. They also gave a kettle inside of an iron. At breakfast time, iced gencha came without ice. Poor water flow at the sink. All in all, we will most likely not return.

Amazing staff who are friendly and helpful. Rooms are beautifully decorated and wonderfully comfortable. Highly recommended. Eco friendly, and definitely a place that is worth returning to.
