What Guests Say About Their Stay

We had no idea what to expect as we booked last minute without doing any research nor looking at pictures. Also the name, One & Only Desaru, is somewhat non-descript, it doesn't evoke much... This is a 5-star resort, an oasis secluded from the world, large luxurious villas, private beaches and all -- and also, I guess, from paparazzis! That kind of a place. Top, top, top. Will return for sure.

Overview of One&Only Desaru Coast

One&Only Desaru Coast is a breathtaking 5-star luxury resort nestled along the pristine south-eastern coastline of Johor, Malaysia. Situated within the expansive Desaru Coast integrated destination, this exclusive retreat overlooks the South China Sea and is cradled by ancient tropical rainforest, offering guests an extraordinary blend of coastal elegance and natural immersion. With just 45 rooms across its beautifully landscaped grounds, the resort delivers a level of intimacy and personalised service that few properties in Southeast Asia can match.

What sets One&Only Desaru Coast apart is its seamless integration with the surrounding environment. The architecture draws deeply from the Malay peninsula's heritage, with open-plan pavilions, soaring timber ceilings, and natural materials that blur the boundaries between interior luxury and the lush outdoors. Every suite features its own private plunge pool, ensuring that seclusion and indulgence are woven into each moment of your stay. From the world-class Chenot Spa to the award-winning dining helmed by internationally acclaimed chefs, every detail here has been considered with extraordinary care.

Guests at One&Only Desaru Coast can expect a resort experience that caters equally to romantic getaways, family holidays, and wellness retreats. The resort's dedicated KidsOnly Club keeps younger travellers thoroughly engaged, while adults can lose themselves in spa rituals, tennis and padel sessions, or simply the quietude of the private beach. Whether you are seeking adventure or complete relaxation, this is a destination that invites you to slow down and savour every element of tropical luxury.

Room Types at One&Only Desaru Coast

One&Only Desaru Coast offers five distinct accommodation categories, each designed to provide a generous sense of space, privacy, and connection to the natural landscape. All suites and villas feature premium bedding, a private furnished terrace with plunge pool, walk-in rainfall showers, standalone bathtubs, complimentary high-speed WiFi, flat-screen televisions, fully stocked minibars, pillow menus, and laptop-compatible in-room safes. Butler service is available around the clock across all room categories.

Rainforest Junior Suite

The Rainforest Junior Suite measures a generous 105 square metres (approximately 1,130 square feet) and is set amongst the resort's ancient tropical rainforest canopy. Each suite features either a king-size bed or twin queen beds, making it suitable for couples or families with young children. The highlight of this room category is the expansive private terrace, complete with a refreshing plunge pool and a cushioned daybed surrounded by verdant greenery. Inside, you will find a dedicated sitting area, a spacious bathroom with both a walk-in rain shower and a freestanding soaking tub, and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the lush jungle landscape. The Rainforest Junior Suite is ideal for travellers who wish to wake up to birdsong and the gentle rustle of tropical foliage.

Ocean Junior Suite

The Ocean Junior Suite also spans 105 square metres and shares the same refined layout as its rainforest counterpart, but with the added allure of direct beach access and unobstructed views of the South China Sea. Configured with a king-size bed, this suite opens onto a private terrace fitted with a plunge pool and daybed, where guests can gaze out at the ocean from the comfort of their own space. The living area includes a comfortable lounge and dining zone, while the bathroom mirrors the same luxurious appointments found throughout the resort. For those who dream of stepping straight from their suite onto golden sand, the Ocean Junior Suite delivers that experience effortlessly.

Ocean Grand Suite

The Ocean Grand Suite is a magnificent 210-square-metre retreat designed for guests seeking even greater space and luxury. This two-bedroom suite features a king bed in the master bedroom and twin beds in the second bedroom, along with three well-appointed bathrooms, each equipped with indulgent rain showers and standalone tubs. The expansive indoor living room flows seamlessly into a generous outdoor veranda and terrace, offering panoramic views of the coastline. With two private plunge pools and direct access to the beach, the Ocean Grand Suite is perfect for families or groups of friends travelling together who desire top-tier comfort without compromise. Maximum occupancy accommodates up to four adults and two children comfortably.

Rainforest Grand Pool Suite

For travellers who crave the ultimate in private resort living, the Rainforest Grand Pool Suite delivers an awe-inspiring 300 square metres (approximately 3,230 square feet) of refined tropical space. The centrepiece of this suite is its own 17-metre private lap pool, surrounded by manicured gardens and the dense canopy of the rainforest. The suite comprises two spacious bedrooms, a generous indoor living and dining area, and multiple outdoor spaces ideal for alfresco meals or quiet contemplation. Every element of the design reflects the resort's commitment to harmonising luxury with nature, and the sense of privacy here is unparalleled. This suite is ideally suited to extended stays or special celebrations where space and exclusivity are paramount.

Villa One

Villa One represents the pinnacle of the One&Only Desaru Coast experience. Spanning an extraordinary 1,500 square metres, this four-bedroom estate is a destination unto itself. Each of the four bedrooms features a king-size bed and en-suite bathroom, accommodating up to eight adults and four children with ease. The villa boasts a spectacular 27-metre private swimming pool with a generous pool deck, open lawns, an outdoor cinema area, and a dedicated barbecue zone. Indoors, guests will find a grand living room, a formal dining room, a home office, and both wet and dry kitchens. A private spa treatment room means wellness therapies can be enjoyed without ever leaving the villa. Dedicated butler service ensures that every need is anticipated, from arranging private dinners to coordinating excursions. Villa One is the ultimate choice for multi-generational family holidays, milestone celebrations, or corporate retreats demanding the highest level of luxury.

Facilities and Amenities

One&Only Desaru Coast offers a wealth of facilities that elevate the guest experience well beyond what is expected even from a five-star resort. The property features three shared swimming pools, including two stunning infinity pools at the Ember Beach Club that overlook the sea. Every suite also includes its own private plunge pool, so guests are never without a place to cool off in complete privacy.

Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate Club One, the resort's comprehensive wellness and sports hub. The fitness centre features both indoor and outdoor training areas, with state-of-the-art equipment and a programme of group fitness classes. Personal training sessions can be arranged for those who prefer a tailored workout. Club One also houses three floodlit tennis courts and two padel courts, staffed by a resident PBI-certified tennis professional who offers private and group lessons for all skill levels.

The Chenot Spa is a crown jewel of the resort, born from a collaboration between One&Only and the globally renowned Chenot wellness group. The spa comprises 10 treatment rooms, a cooling pool, a steam room, and a dedicated relaxation pavilion. Treatments are individually tailored and draw upon four wellness pillars: Sport and Physical Activities, Emotional Wellbeing, Nutrition, and Aesthetics. The spa philosophy combines cutting-edge science with ancient healing wisdom, and guests may also participate in UNESCO-listed Silat Melayu martial arts sessions for a uniquely Malaysian wellness experience.

Families travelling with children will find the KidsOnly Club to be an exceptional amenity. The club features an EcoLab where children learn about the local ecosystem, a Creative Studio for art projects, and a Fisherman Hut with a fishing pond. An ice cream cart and soda bar keep younger guests refreshed throughout the day. For teenagers, One Tribe offers age-appropriate activities including an art studio, cycling, basketball, archery, badminton, football, volleyball, and even golf lessons at the nearby Els Club Desaru Coast. Complimentary high-speed WiFi is available throughout the resort, and valet parking is provided for guests arriving by car.

Location and Getting There

One&Only Desaru Coast is located at Persiaran Damai, Desaru Coast, 81930 Bandar Penawar, Johor. The resort sits along the south-eastern shoreline of Peninsular Malaysia, facing the South China Sea and surrounded by ancient rainforest. The Desaru Coast integrated destination is a well-developed area that also includes adventure parks, golf courses, and retail outlets, making it an excellent base for exploring this part of Johor.

The most common route to the resort is via Senai International Airport (JHB), which is approximately 90 kilometres away. The drive takes between 1.5 and 2 hours depending on traffic conditions, and the resort can arrange private car transfers for a seamless arrival. For guests flying into Singapore Changi Airport (SIN), the resort is accessible via the Tuas Second Link border crossing, with a total journey time of around 2 to 2.5 hours, making it a popular escape for travellers from Singapore as well.

Within the immediate vicinity, guests can explore several notable attractions. The Els Club Desaru Coast, an acclaimed 27-hole golf course designed by Ernie Els, is just 1.6 kilometres from the resort. The Desaru Coast Adventure Waterpark, one of the largest waterparks in the region, is a mere 2.3 kilometres away and offers an exciting day out for families. Nature lovers can visit the Desaru Fruit Farm, take an evening trip to the Kota Tinggi Firefly Park for a magical mangrove experience, or explore the Tanjung Balau Fishermen Museum for a glimpse into the region's maritime heritage. Local night markets are also within easy reach and offer an authentic taste of Malaysian street food culture.

Dining at One&Only Desaru Coast

Dining at One&Only Desaru Coast is a destination experience in its own right, with four distinct restaurants and bars each offering a carefully curated culinary journey. The resort's dining programme celebrates both international and local Malaysian flavours, with menus that emphasise seasonality, provenance, and exceptional quality ingredients.

Ambara is the resort's all-day dining restaurant, open for both breakfast and dinner. Mediterranean-inspired with thoughtful Asian accents, the breakfast menu features everything from flavourful shakshuka and spiced buckwheat pancakes to beloved Malaysian staples such as nasi lemak, roti canai, and brown rice congee. Evening dining at Ambara showcases seasonal produce prepared with care and creativity, making it a relaxed yet refined choice for dinner.

Hoshi is the resort's signature Japanese restaurant, an intimate venue where traditional Japanese sensibility meets modern culinary technique. Seated at the bar counter, guests can observe the chef expertly prepare tempura, nigiri sushi, and sashimi with precision and flair. Seasonal omakase menus highlight the finest ingredients, paired beautifully with an extensive selection of Japanese sake and exclusive whiskies. Hoshi is a must-visit for guests who appreciate the artistry of Japanese cuisine.

Ember Beach Club brings vibrant energy to the resort's beachfront. Helmed by celebrated Chef Andrew Walsh, Ember serves Asian-inspired barbecue dishes in a stunning setting overlooking two infinity pools and the sea. Signature dishes include grilled seabass with green curry and fragrant coconut rice, grilled baby lobster basted with brown butter and house-made XO sauce, and tender wagyu ribeye with kampot black pepper sauce and shallot jam. The atmosphere here transitions beautifully from lively daytime poolside dining to romantic evening meals as the sun sets over the South China Sea.

Dusky Monkey is the resort's open-air bar, perched above the main swimming pool. It offers an extensive menu of curated rums from across the region, fine whiskies, artisanal gins, and premium tonics. It is the perfect spot for a pre-dinner cocktail or a late-night nightcap beneath the stars. For a lighter refreshment option, Essential serves Malaysian-inspired drinks and light bites throughout the day.

Why Stay at One&Only Desaru Coast

Unmatched privacy and exclusivity. With only 45 rooms across a sprawling beachfront and rainforest estate, One&Only Desaru Coast offers a level of seclusion that is exceptionally rare in Southeast Asia. Every suite includes a private plunge pool, and the resort's low density ensures a tranquil, unhurried atmosphere throughout your stay.

World-class wellness at the Chenot Spa. The partnership with Chenot brings a globally respected wellness methodology to the heart of Johor's coastline. From individually tailored treatment programmes to immersive fitness experiences and the unique opportunity to learn Silat Melayu, the resort's wellness offering goes far beyond a standard hotel spa.

Exceptional dining variety. Few resorts of this size offer four distinct dining venues of such calibre. Whether you are savouring an omakase dinner at Hoshi, enjoying beachside barbecue at Ember, or starting the day with nasi lemak at Ambara, the culinary programme at One&Only Desaru Coast rivals standalone fine dining restaurants.

A true family-friendly luxury resort. The dedicated KidsOnly Club and One Tribe teen programme mean that younger guests are just as well catered for as adults. Families can enjoy quality time together at the beach, the waterpark, or the golf course, while children have their own enriching and entertaining experiences to look forward to each day.

Strategic location with easy access. Desaru Coast is well-connected to both Johor and Singapore, making it an accessible luxury escape without the need for a long-haul flight. The surrounding area offers a rich mix of attractions, from championship golf and adventure waterparks to local cultural experiences, ensuring there is always something new to discover beyond the resort.

Tips for Booking One&Only Desaru Coast

Book during the dry season for the best weather. The ideal time to visit Desaru Coast is between March and October, when rainfall is at its lowest and the sea conditions are calmest. This period is perfect for beach activities, water sports, and outdoor dining. If you prefer quieter periods with potentially lower rates, consider weekday stays outside Malaysian and Singaporean school holidays.

Choose your suite based on your priorities. If you value being surrounded by nature and prefer a peaceful, shaded setting, the Rainforest Junior Suite is an excellent choice. For guests who want to step directly onto the sand, the Ocean Junior Suite offers unbeatable beach access. Families and groups should consider the Ocean Grand Suite or the Rainforest Grand Pool Suite for additional bedrooms and generous living space. For milestone celebrations or large family gatherings, Villa One is worth the investment for its extraordinary facilities and complete privacy.

Request a Chenot Spa consultation early. The spa's individually tailored programmes are best enjoyed when booked in advance, allowing the wellness team to prepare a bespoke treatment plan before your arrival. If a comprehensive wellness retreat is part of your travel goals, communicate this at the time of booking so the resort can customise your experience from the moment you arrive.

Take advantage of the full Desaru Coast destination. While it is tempting to remain within the resort, the surrounding Desaru Coast area offers superb experiences. Book a round at The Els Club for world-class golf, spend a morning at the Adventure Waterpark with the children, or arrange a private excursion to the Kota Tinggi Firefly Park for an unforgettable evening. The resort's concierge team can organise all of these activities seamlessly.

Check in and check out times. Standard check-in time at One&Only Desaru Coast is 15:00 and check-out is 12:00. If you are arriving on an early flight, consider requesting early check-in at the time of booking, subject to availability. Late check-out requests are also often accommodated and can make a significant difference to the enjoyment of your final day, particularly if you wish to fit in a last spa treatment or leisurely lunch at Ember Beach Club before departing.

For one of the most expensive resort in Desaru, everything should be ready even with no reservations. High tea at 3-5pm and when I requested for high tea at 4:45pm the server rejected the request saying they have finished serving high tea. Quite a shame for a luxury hotel. Been to others luxurious resorts and never get this kind of request turned down.

We stayed two nights at One&Only Desaru Coast with our baby. The resort anticipated all our needs with a cot, changing table, sterilizer and bottle warmer. The room and food were impeccable. However, we were rather disappointed by the patchy service during breakfast. For two mornings, we had our orders forgotten. For the first morning’s order we had to ask twice before we were served. In the second breakfast our ordered dishes didn’t even come, and we gave up asking. Simple requests like baby cutlery and tissue paper took 10 minutes to arrive. For all the great service elsewhere in the resort, the breakfast service was just simply not up to standards for a resort of this calibre. All in all it could have been a perfect experience if not for the frustrating experience at breakfast.

Amazing property with some fantastic people and overall very good service. The engaged and present management team does a great job helping people grow, where necessary. Both restaurants are good, delivering on service, food and ambience. Personally I would like to see Hoshi deliver “a bit more”, move from good to outstanding, also to match the price tag. Looking forward to seeing the development over time.

Had a memorable 3D2N stay with my family in One&Only. The room is well equipped with everything you would need for a perfect staycation; a spacious bathroom, bath bomb for a relaxing soaking, tea in a variety choices and Nespresso coffee machine. Balcony with a long couch is a plus for family chilling session. A short walking to the private beach where you could enjoy the sunrise. The Resort Manager, Mr Rahman is attentive and graceful in accepting feedback. Definitely will come back for another stay.

The resort is nice but the food at the hotel is overpriced for example a plate of chicken rice will cost you about RM115. Overall the experience is nice and the staff were very friendly and helpful. In addition, the sports club facilities ie tennis and other varieties of sports are excellent. But during this monsoon period ie in December, there’s nothing much you can do at the beach. So try to avoid this period if you can.

This happens to be the 4th One&Only resort that I’ve stayed at; therefore there are certain expectations are required to be met. This is an excellent 5 Star Resort without any doubt but hasn’t quite succeeded in living up to the One&Only brand, unfortunately. Parking my vehicle was not an issue but lugging my baggage up a flight of stairs from the carpark to the lobby without any help was not very pleasant. I was only brought to my villa for check-in after I waiting in the lobby from 3.15pm to 4.15pm. Even then, I had to make a fuss before one of the staff attended to me. I was flabbergasted that coffee and tea was served without a sugar bowl or a milk jug during breakfast. I had to remind a member of the staff and by the time the milk and sugar arrived, I was about to finish my breakfast. Great attention to detail when it comes to amenities and presentation and I wouldn’t expect any less from The One&Only must say that all the staff are very well mannered, polite and helpful

This is a 5-star resort, an oasis secluded from the world, large luxurious villas, private beaches and all -- and also, I guess, from paparazzis! That kind of a place. Top, top, top. Will return for sure.

We had an incredibly private and relaxing time at One & Only Desaru Coast. Cannot recommend this resort enough. Will certainly be back.

The location is unique and private with access to beach at a stone’s throw away. While not fully on board option, the dining and experiences are well worth the value.
