Firstly, parking is very easy. Just in front of the hotel. No need to walk far. Just enter the hotel, it feels like in KL. There is a cafe for coffee and there is also a cafe for food. The smell is just wonderful. The pool is clean and beautiful. A rare attraction in a hotel is a play therapy room for children, free of charge. There are also many restaurants in front of the hotel. Just choose whichever one you like.

I have stayed in many hotels. This is the only one that has Netflix and YouTube. I enjoyed watching Netflix with my wife. The hotel is very near and walking distance to the Aman Central mall. It is also near Masjid Zahir. The in-house restaurant serves a variety of dishes in the evening at a reasonable price. I will definitely come again, God willing.

This hotel was perfect for my needs, traveling alone and exploring this beautiful location. Near the town center and all the wonderful sites on offer. Really well presented, clean, compact, with many amenities in the room that I would have expected in a higher grade of hotel. It was modern and the staff delightful. Much better than I anticipated. Great place.

More about hotels in Alor Setar

Hotels in Alor Setar — Your Complete Guide

Alor Setar is the royal capital of Kedah, Malaysia's oldest state, and serves as a practical overnight stop for travellers heading to Langkawi Island. Located in the northern rice bowl of Peninsular Malaysia, Alor Setar sits roughly 30 minutes from Kuala Kedah jetty, from where hourly ferries depart for Langkawi. The city is steeped in history — it is the birthplace of Malaysia's longest-serving Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and home to the stunning Zahir Mosque, one of the oldest and most beautiful state mosques in the country. Traveloka lists hotels in Alor Setar starting from RM 50/night, making it one of the most affordable state capitals in Peninsular Malaysia for accommodation.

Best Areas to Stay in Alor Setar

Alor Setar is a compact city with most hotels concentrated in two areas, both within easy driving distance of the Langkawi ferry terminal.

Alor Setar Town Centre

The historic heart of the city surrounds the Alor Setar Tower (Menara Alor Setar), Zahir Mosque, and the Pekan Rabu market complex. Most mid-range hotels and budget guesthouses are clustered here. The area is walkable for sightseeing, with the main landmarks within 1–2 km of each other. Kuala Kedah ferry terminal is approximately 30 minutes by car from the town centre.

Budget: RM 50–90/night  |  Mid-range: RM 100–200/night  |  Luxury: RM 250–400/night

Aman Central Area

The modern commercial district is anchored by Aman Central Mall, Kedah's largest shopping centre. Newer hotels in this zone offer contemporary amenities and easy highway access — both north towards Perlis and the Thai border, and south towards Penang. This area is a practical choice for travellers who are driving or who prefer modern shopping and dining facilities.

Budget: RM 55–100/night  |  Mid-range: RM 120–220/night

Hotel Prices in Alor Setar by Star Rating

Alor Setar offers some of the most affordable hotel rates in Peninsular Malaysia. Here is a guide to what you can expect at each tier.

2-Star Hotels: RM 50–100/night. Basic rooms with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and private bathrooms. Suitable for transit travellers stopping overnight before a morning ferry to Langkawi.

3-Star Hotels: RM 100–200/night. Comfortable hotels with breakfast included, swimming pools at selected properties, and well-furnished rooms. The most popular category for Langkawi-bound travellers.

4-Star Hotels: RM 200–400/night. Premium properties with full facilities including restaurants, fitness centres, and meeting rooms. Limited selection in Alor Setar, but the available options deliver good value.

5-Star Hotels: Alor Setar does not have dedicated 5-star hotels. Travellers seeking luxury accommodation typically proceed directly to Langkawi, where the island's world-class resorts are available.

Best Time to Visit Alor Setar

Alor Setar has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round. The driest months are January to April, which coincides with the best period for the Langkawi ferry crossing. The wettest months are September to November, though rainfall in the northern plains is less severe than on the east coast. Hotel rates in Alor Setar remain relatively stable throughout the year, with slight increases during Hari Raya Aidilfitri and school holiday periods when many Malaysians transit through the city en route to Langkawi. Prices also rise during the annual Kedah paddy harvest season festivals in January and February.

Getting to Alor Setar and Getting Around

Sultan Abdul Halim Airport (AOR) is located 13 km north of the city centre and receives flights from Kuala Lumpur on AirAsia (approximately 1.5 hours). Many travellers also drive from Penang — the journey takes approximately 1.5 hours via the North-South Expressway. Alor Setar is also connected by KTM ETS (Electric Train Service) from Kuala Lumpur (approximately 5.5 hours) and Butterworth/Penang (approximately 1.5 hours). Within the city, Grab is the most convenient transport option, with rides typically costing RM 5–15.

Top Attractions Near Alor Setar Hotels

Zahir Mosque: Built in 1912, Zahir Mosque is one of the grandest and oldest state mosques in Malaysia. Its Moorish architecture with five large domes is a defining landmark of Alor Setar. Non-Muslim visitors can view and photograph the exterior.

Alor Setar Tower (Menara Alor Setar): Standing at 165 metres, this telecommunications tower offers an observation deck with panoramic views of the Kedah rice fields and the surrounding city. A revolving restaurant is located near the top.

Pekan Rabu: A bustling market complex selling local handicrafts, dodol (palm sugar toffee), Kedah-style kuih, and traditional Malay clothing. A must-visit for food souvenirs.

Paddy Museum (Muzium Padi): A unique museum dedicated to the rice cultivation that defines Kedah's landscape and economy. Interactive exhibits explain the traditional and modern methods of rice farming in Malaysia.

Kuala Kedah Fort: A historic waterfront fort near the Langkawi ferry terminal, dating back to the 17th century. It was built as a defence against Siamese and Portuguese incursions and offers views across the strait towards Langkawi.

Tips for Booking Hotels in Alor Setar

Book near the town centre for sightseeing. If you plan to explore Alor Setar's attractions before heading to Langkawi, a town centre hotel puts you within walking distance of Zahir Mosque, the tower, and Pekan Rabu.

Consider arrival and departure times. If you have an early morning ferry from Kuala Kedah, ensure your hotel can arrange early checkout or is close to the highway for a quick 30-minute drive to the jetty.

Use Traveloka's free cancellation filter. This is useful if your Langkawi plans change, as ferry schedules can occasionally be affected by weather or tidal conditions.

Combine with Penang for a northern Malaysia itinerary. Alor Setar is only 1.5 hours from Penang by car or ETS train, making it easy to combine both destinations in a single trip before heading to Langkawi.

Must-try dishes include laksa Kedah (a fish-based laksa distinct from Penang laksa), nasi ulam (herbed rice), kuih kapit (love letter biscuits), and dodol (a chewy palm sugar confection). Zahir Mosque, Alor Setar Tower, and Pekan Rabu market can be covered in 3–4 hours. The surrounding Kedah rice paddies are especially photogenic during planting season (May–June) and harvest season (January–February). If you have time, the city provides an authentic Malay cultural experience that contrasts nicely with Langkawi's resort atmosphere.

Is Alor Setar a good base for visiting Langkawi?

Yes — Alor Setar is the closest mainland city to Kuala Kedah jetty, from where hourly ferries depart to Langkawi (1.5-hour crossing). It is a practical overnight stop if you have an early morning ferry. Alternatively, Kuala Perlis (1 hour north of Alor Setar) has a shorter ferry to Langkawi (45 minutes). Flying directly into Langkawi International Airport (LGK) is the fastest option from KL.

Top 4-star options such as Regency Alor Setar Hotel and Cinta Sayang Resort (Sungai Petani, nearby) range from RM 180–320/night. Alor Setar is significantly cheaper than Penang or KL for equivalent hotel quality.

Do Alor Setar hotels offer free cancellation?

Many Alor Setar hotels on Traveloka offer free cancellation. This is recommended for Langkawi-transit stays as ferry schedules can be affected by rough weather. Use the Free Cancellation filter when booking on Traveloka.

What is the food scene like in Alor Setar?

Alor Setar has an excellent hawker food scene influenced by both Malay and Thai cuisine. Specialties include Nasi Kandar, Laksa Kedah (sour fish-based soup), Sup Gear Box (beef bone soup), and Laksam. Pekan Rabu market sells traditional Kedah snacks and is worth exploring. The city is far less touristy than Penang, so prices are significantly lower for the same quality of Malay street food.
