Overview of Mercure Penang Beach

Mercure Penang Beach is a well-established 4-star beachfront hotel nestled along the scenic coastline of Tanjung Bungah in George Town, Penang. Managed under the internationally renowned Accor hotel group, this 230-room property enjoys a privileged position directly overlooking the Andaman Sea, offering guests a genuine seaside retreat without sacrificing easy access to Penang's cultural and culinary attractions. The hotel occupies a stretch of sandy beach that has long been a favourite among both local residents and international visitors drawn to Penang's northern shoreline.

What sets Mercure Penang Beach apart from many city-centre hotels in Penang is the seamless combination of beachfront relaxation and urban convenience. The hotel sits comfortably between the bustling heritage zone of George Town and the resort strip of Batu Ferringhi, placing guests within a short drive of virtually every major attraction on the island. Whether you are a leisure traveller seeking a sun-soaked holiday or a business guest attending meetings at nearby convention venues, the property delivers a balanced experience that caters to a broad range of needs.

Guests frequently praise the hotel's warm hospitality and its ability to deliver the hallmarks of the Mercure brand — contemporary comfort rooted in local character. From the ocean-facing swimming pool to the flavours of Penang served at breakfast, the hotel embraces its Malaysian setting wholeheartedly. The property has earned consistently positive reviews for its friendly staff, generous breakfast spread, and panoramic sea views that greet guests from numerous vantage points throughout the resort.

Room Types at Mercure Penang Beach

Mercure Penang Beach offers 230 well-appointed guestrooms spread across three distinct categories, each designed with modern furnishings and thoughtful amenities. All rooms are fully air-conditioned and equipped with a flat-screen satellite television, complimentary high-speed WiFi, an in-room electronic safe, and tea and coffee making facilities. Bathrooms across all categories feature a rain shower, hairdryer, complimentary toiletries, and fresh towels. The hotel's contemporary interiors make use of clean lines and warm tones, creating a comfortable atmosphere suited to both short getaways and extended stays.

Standard Room

The

Standard Room

at Mercure Penang Beach provides a comfortable base for guests who prioritise value without compromising on quality. These rooms are furnished with either a king-sized bed or twin single beds, making them suitable for couples as well as friends or colleagues travelling together. The room accommodates up to two adult guests. Standard amenities include the flat-screen TV with satellite channels, a work desk for those who need to attend to business matters, complimentary WiFi, and the full complement of bathroom essentials including a rain shower. While the Standard Room does not feature a direct sea view, the rooms are well-insulated from noise and benefit from ample natural light, ensuring a restful night's sleep after a day of exploring Penang.

Superior Sea View

The

Superior Sea View

room is the most popular category at Mercure Penang Beach, and for good reason. Measuring approximately 28 square metres (around 301 square feet), these rooms open up to sweeping panoramic views of the Andaman Sea — a feature that transforms the stay from pleasant to truly memorable. Guests can choose between a king bed configuration or twin beds, and the room comfortably accommodates up to two adults. Beyond the standard amenities, the Superior Sea View room benefits from its orientation towards the ocean, allowing guests to wake up to the sight of the shimmering sea and enjoy stunning sunsets from the comfort of their room. The 42-inch LCD television, rain shower, ironing facilities, and generous wardrobe space ensure that every practical need is met. With 112 ocean-facing rooms available in the hotel, the Superior Sea View category forms a significant portion of the property's inventory, yet early booking is still recommended during peak holiday periods.

Privilege Room

For guests seeking an elevated experience, the

Privilege Room

represents the premium tier at Mercure Penang Beach. This category builds upon the features of the Superior Sea View room with additional exclusive touches designed to make your stay feel truly special. Privilege Room guests enjoy enhanced in-room amenities, which typically include a welcome drink upon arrival, plush bathrobes and slippers, premium bathroom toiletries, and a well-stocked minibar. The room itself offers generous proportions and is positioned to maximise the ocean views. This category is ideal for guests celebrating a special occasion, honeymooners looking for added romance, or business travellers who appreciate the finer details after a long day. The Privilege Room experience aligns with the Accor brand's commitment to providing a step up in service for discerning guests, and it remains one of the best ways to enjoy the full beachfront experience that Mercure Penang Beach has to offer.

Facilities and Amenities

The centrepiece of the hotel's leisure facilities is the

outdoor swimming pool

, which faces directly out towards the sea. The pool has a depth of 1.5 metres and is open daily from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, providing ample opportunity for morning laps or a relaxing afternoon dip with the Andaman Sea as your backdrop. Sun loungers and parasols are arranged around the pool deck, making it a popular spot for guests to unwind with a book or a cold drink from the nearby bar.

Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the hotel's

24-hour gymnasium

, which is equipped with a range of cardiovascular and strength-training machines. The round-the-clock access is a genuine advantage for early risers and those arriving on late flights who still wish to maintain their exercise routine. The gym is well-maintained and air-conditioned, ensuring a comfortable workout regardless of the tropical heat outside.

Mercure Penang Beach provides

complimentary high-speed WiFi

throughout the entire property, covering guestrooms, public areas, the pool deck, and the restaurant. This makes the hotel a practical choice for digital nomads or business travellers who need to stay connected during their visit. The hotel also features a

24-hour front desk

and a dedicated tour desk where staff can assist with arranging local excursions, transport, and day trips to popular Penang attractions.

For those arriving by car,

complimentary on-site parking

is available — a notable perk given that many beachfront hotels in Penang charge for parking. The hotel also offers

four fully equipped meeting rooms

that can be configured in various layouts, making the property suitable for corporate retreats, seminars, and small-scale conferences. Direct

beach access

from the hotel grounds allows guests to step onto the sand within moments, adding to the resort-like feel of the property.

Location and Getting There

Mercure Penang Beach is located at

Jalan Tanjung Bungah, 11200 Penang

, in the coastal neighbourhood of Tanjung Bungah. This area occupies a scenic stretch along Penang Island's northern coast, positioned conveniently between the UNESCO World Heritage Site of George Town to the east and the popular beach resort area of Batu Ferringhi to the west. The hotel's location makes it an ideal base for guests who want the best of both worlds — beachfront living with easy access to heritage, shopping, and street food.

From

Penang International Airport

, the hotel is approximately 25 kilometres away. The drive typically takes around 40 to 50 minutes depending on traffic conditions, with the route passing through the island's eastern corridor before heading north along the coast. Taxis and e-hailing services such as Grab are readily available at the airport, with fares starting from approximately RM 50 to RM 70 for the journey. The hotel also offers an airport shuttle service for guests who prefer to arrange their transfer in advance.

If you are arriving via the

Penang Sentral

ferry and bus terminal on the mainland, the journey to the hotel involves crossing the Penang Bridge or taking the ferry to George Town, followed by a drive northward along the coast. The total travel time is roughly 45 minutes to one hour. For those exploring the island,

Gurney Plaza

and

Gurney Drive

are approximately 10 to 15 minutes by car, while the vibrant

George Town heritage zone

with its famous street art and clan jetties is around 15 minutes away. The resort strip of

Batu Ferringhi

, known for its night market and water sports, is also just 15 minutes to the north.

Closer to the hotel, guests can explore the

Tanjung Bungah Floating Mosque

, situated around 3 kilometres away, or visit the

Penang Avatar Secret Garden

, which is less than a kilometre from the property.

Straits Quay

, a waterfront retail marina with boutique shops and dining outlets, is a short 10-minute drive away and makes for a pleasant evening outing.

Dining at Mercure Penang Beach

The Ombak

is the hotel's signature all-day dining restaurant, located on the ground floor with a spacious terrace that looks directly out over the ocean. The name "Ombak," meaning "wave" in Malay, perfectly captures the restaurant's seaside character. The Ombak serves a diverse menu of international and Malaysian cuisine, making it a versatile dining option for guests with varying tastes. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, ensuring that guests always have a convenient on-site dining option available.

Breakfast at The Ombak is a highlight of the Mercure Penang Beach experience. The daily

buffet breakfast

, served from 7:00 am to 10:00 am, features a generous spread that includes both Western favourites and beloved local dishes. Guests can look forward to freshly prepared

nasi lemak

,

roti canai

, eggs cooked to order, pastries, fresh tropical fruits, and a variety of hot and cold beverages including the ever-popular

teh tarik

. Reviewers consistently note that the breakfast selection is well-maintained throughout service hours, with staff attentively replenishing dishes right up until closing time.

For drinks and lighter fare, the

M Bar

offers a relaxed setting with magnificent sea views and soothing background music. The bar runs daily happy hours from 4:00 pm until midnight, making it an excellent spot to enjoy a sunset cocktail or a nightcap. Room service is also available for guests who prefer to dine in the privacy of their room.

Beyond the hotel, Tanjung Bungah is home to a thriving local food scene. The

Tanjung Bungah Market and Food Complex

is located just over a kilometre away and offers an authentic hawker dining experience with stalls serving Penang classics such as char koay teow, Hokkien mee, and Penang laksa.

Sure Win Food Court

and

Medan Selera Mutiara

are other popular neighbourhood eateries. For a more contemporary dining experience,

Gusto Cafe

on Jalan Tanjung Bungah serves excellent coffee and Western-style brunch, while

Sunshine Bay Seafood

is a local favourite for fresh seafood and Chinese-style cooking.

Why Stay at Mercure Penang Beach

Genuine beachfront location with direct sea access.

Unlike many hotels in Penang that market themselves as "beach hotels" despite being set back from the shore, Mercure Penang Beach delivers true beachfront living. The hotel sits directly on the sand, and guests can walk from the pool deck to the beach in moments. The panoramic views of the Andaman Sea from the Superior Sea View and Privilege Room categories are among the finest available in this price range on Penang Island.

Strategic position between George Town and Batu Ferringhi.

The hotel's Tanjung Bungah location is one of its greatest assets. Guests enjoy a quieter, more relaxed setting than the busier tourist strips, yet remain within a 15-minute drive of George Town's heritage attractions, Gurney Drive's hawker food, and Batu Ferringhi's night market. This balance of tranquillity and accessibility is difficult to find elsewhere on the island.

Exceptional breakfast experience.

The buffet breakfast at The Ombak consistently earns praise from guests for its variety, quality, and the ocean-view setting in which it is served. The inclusion of authentic Penang dishes alongside international options ensures that every guest finds something to enjoy, and the attentive service throughout the breakfast period adds to the overall experience.

Complimentary parking and WiFi.

In a market where many hotels charge separately for parking and internet access, Mercure Penang Beach includes both at no additional cost. This is particularly valuable for self-drive guests exploring the island and for business travellers who require constant connectivity.

Trusted international brand with local charm.

As part of the Accor group, Mercure Penang Beach benefits from internationally recognised service standards while retaining a distinctly Malaysian warmth. Guests who are members of the Accor loyalty programme can earn and redeem points during their stay, adding further value to the booking.

Tips for Booking Mercure Penang Beach

Book early for sea-view rooms during peak seasons.

The Superior Sea View and Privilege Room categories are the most sought-after at the hotel, and availability can become limited during Malaysian school holidays, festive periods such as Chinese New Year and Hari Raya, and the European winter holiday season from December through February. If a sea view is important to you, aim to book at least three to four weeks in advance during these periods to secure your preferred room type.

Consider weekday stays for better value.

Like most beachfront hotels in Penang, rates at Mercure Penang Beach tend to be more competitive on weekdays compared to weekends and public holidays. If your travel dates are flexible, a Sunday-to-Thursday stay can offer meaningful savings, allowing you to allocate more of your budget towards dining and experiences on the island.

Request a higher floor for the best views.

When booking a Superior Sea View or Privilege Room, it is worth adding a note to your reservation requesting a higher floor. While all sea-view rooms benefit from the ocean panorama, the upper floors provide an even more expansive vantage point and tend to be quieter, as they are further from the pool and restaurant areas.

Check-in is at 2:00 pm and check-out is at 12:00 noon.

These timings are standard for the property. If you are arriving on an early flight, you may wish to contact the hotel in advance to enquire about early check-in availability, which is sometimes offered on a complimentary basis subject to room readiness. Similarly, late check-out can occasionally be arranged and is worth requesting if you have a late evening flight.

Take advantage of the tour desk.

The hotel's dedicated tour desk can arrange day trips to popular Penang attractions including the Penang Hill funicular railway, Kek Lok Si Temple, the Tropical Spice Garden, and boat trips to nearby islands. Booking through the hotel is convenient and the staff can offer local insights that help you make the most of your time on the island. For self-drive guests, the complimentary parking at the hotel makes it easy to use Mercure Penang Beach as a base for exploring the entire island at your own pace.

Great location with beautiful beach front and nice pool. Rooms are large. However this experience didn’t live up to what I expected of a well known international hotel brand. The rooms were noisy, we had to asked to be moved as we could hear everything through an adjoining door to the room next door. There was black mould in the shower and despite staying 9 nights our room was not cleaned once, just made up daily. A few times we came back late in the afternoon and our room still hadn’t been made up. The WiFi hardly ever worked in our room. If you wanted to ask reception about anything it was always very slow to be able to speak to someone.

It was our annual family getaway and Mercure Penang Beach ticked off most of the checkboxes except a few! The room was great with a fantastic view of the sea. A nice pool and the beach just in front was wonderful. However, we faced few issues with service. On the first day after the check-in, they seemed to have misplaced our luggage. It took a couple of hours and multiple calls to the front desk to finally get our luggages in the room. Also the housekeeping could be a bit more thorough as both the shampoo and the toilet paper were out in the bathroom and we had to call the front desk to get replacement.

Unreliable, highly not recommended to book anything at this hotel. Poor hotel staff training! Horrible experience!
