Literally meaning ‘Flower Cape’, Tanjung Bungah is a seaside suburb located between Gurney and Batu Feringghi, about a half-hour’s drive from Georgetown. Originally a sleepy fishing village, it has risen in popularity over the years to become one of Penang’s most popular destinations. Watersports activities are most popular in Tanjung Bungah, with Penang Water Sports Centre based here. Built amongst its spectacular natural landscape are world-class hotels and resorts, offering guests the utmost comfort and luxury in an idyllic location. Tanjung Bungah is pretty quiet when compared to its more touristy neighbours, Batu Feringghi, Gurney and Georgetown. You can’t miss them as you would be passing them by en route to Batu Feringghi.

By Car

It is very easy to get to Tanjung Bungah by car. The North-South PLUS Highway is a modern toll road that runs from Perlis to Johor Bharu. Use the exits to Penang Bridge or Penang Second Bridge to access Penang Island where Tanjung Bungah is located.

Penang Floating Mosque

Masjid Terapung or the Floating Mosque was built in 2004 in a bid to replace an older mosque which was damaged in the year’s major tsunami disaster. Situated along Tanjung Bungah’s stretch of beach, the mosque is an architectural wonder with its Moorish design, seven-storey-high towering minarets and 360-degree panoramic view of the sea. It’s the first mosque in the country to be built on the sea, with pillars and stilts supporting its majestic structure. Covering an area of 1,295sqm, it can accommodate up to 1500 people during prayer times. Opening Hours: N/A, but permission to enter must be obtained from the mosque officials. No shoes are allowed inside the mosque, and all visitors must be decently dressed. Closed during Friday prayers (from 12:00 – 14:30).

Penang Toy Museum

Penang Toy Museum bills itself as the world’s largest toy museum. It is home to over 100,000 dolls, trains and other collectibles and has earned a spot in the Malaysian Book of Records as the country’s first toy museum, with the largest toy and figurine collection. Walking through the front doors is like stepping back into childhood and you are sure to see some old friends in the collection, from My Little Ponies and Care Bears to Doraemon and Gundam collectibles. A kitschy yet fun place to visit, it is a worthwhile and entertaining place to visit for both adults and kids. The 6996 square -feet Penang Toy Museum was started by Loh Lean Cheng, who was inspired after visiting the London Toy and Model Museum. He began his collection with a Popeye doll, bought in 1973, and from then on the compilation grew. The most expensive toy at the complex is a RM 9000 Gundam robot from Japan: the 1.8m-tall robot is a rare, limited edition toy Cheng acquired on a trip. The museum receives more than 100 visitors a day.
