About

Jerejak Island or Pulau Jerejak is located in Bayan Lepas, off the south eastern tip of Penang Island. Historically, Francis Light, the founder of Penang arrived in Jerejak Island in early 1786 before heading on to Penang. In 1797, Colonel Arthur Wellesley had proposed Jerejak as the possible site for Fort Cornwallis. This acts to offer protection to a new township called Jamestown, which was to be set up in present-day Bayan Lepas. This 362 hectare island is located between the Penang Main Island and Seberang Prai and it is rich with history, flora and fauna.

How to Get There

By Car

From Penang International Airport, you take a cab or rent a car to the Jerejak Ferry Terminal. The ride takes up an estimated time of 20 minutes. Then, take the ferry ride to reach Jerejak Island. The ride consumes around 10 minutes with a cost of RM25 for adults and RM16 for children (round trip).

Kek Lok Si Temple

Kek Lok Si is the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia and it is divided into three zones while the temple grounds comprise the hill entrance, souvenir, food and drinks stalls and the turtle liberation pond. The mid section of the temple houses temples, gardens, the pagoda and the four heavenly kings pavilion whereas the hilltop plays host to an enormous statue of the Goddess of Mercy, Kuan Yin as well as more gardens and temples Also known as the ‘Temple of Supreme Bliss’, it features a maze of souvenir kiosks as well as a turtle and fish pond. Standing on a hilltop at Air Itam, near Penang Hill,this temple composed of millions of magnificent images of Buddha and hundreds of beautiful meaningful carvings, sculptures and murals in the interior and exterior of the temple halls, pagodas and archways. Besides that, it is also an unique heritage treasures that have Mahayana Buddhism and traditional Chinese rituals blend into a harmonious whole, in temple architecture and daily activities of worshipers.

Penang Botanical Gardens

Penang Botanical Gardens are usually simply called the Botanic Gardens by Penang islanders. Also known as the Waterfalls Gardens, it was set up by the British in 1884 by Charles Curtis of the Gardens & Forests Departments Straits Settlements and used to be an old quarry site and is divided into 12 sections which are the Formal Garden, Lily Pond, Perdana Plant House, Tropical Rainforest Jungle Track, Fern House, Fern Rockery, Aroid Walkaway, Cactus House, Orchidarium, Horticulture Centre, Nursery and Quarry Recreational Park. The Penang Botanical Garden are about 8 kilometres from Georgetown, and some of the flora there includes the cannonball tree, sengkuang tree, pinang palm, black lily, slipper orchids and many more.
