Gerik is a district capital in Hulu Perak District, Perak. The town as known by locals is Rest Town due to its strategic location next to the East-West Highway, which a link between Kedah and Penang to the east coast Kelantan and Terengganu.
Gerik was named by the local king named Raja Reman back in hundred years ago. The name was derived due to the noise made by the pencil-tailed tree mouse when they gnawed or in Bahasa Melayu known as “menggerit” at the bamboo. Later, the word “gerit” had been used and heard as “Gerik”. Thus, the place was named based on that noise sound.
