Your Travel Guide to Johor Bahru as a Malaysian Traveler

How to Get to Johor Bahru from Kuala Lumpur and Major Malaysian Cities

Traveling to Johor Bahru from Kuala Lumpur and other major Malaysian cities is convenient, with multiple transport options available. For those prioritizing speed, flights are a popular choice. Numerous daily flights operate between Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Senai International Airport (JHB) in Johor Bahru. Flight durations are typically around 1 hour, and fares can range from MYR 100 to MYR 300 or more, depending on the airline and booking time. You can easily book flight tickets on Traveloka for competitive prices.

Alternatively, bus travel offers a more economical option. Comfortable express buses connect Kuala Lumpur's TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) to Johor Bahru's Larkin Sentral. The journey usually takes between 4 to 5 hours, with ticket prices typically ranging from MYR 35 to MYR 50. This is a practical choice for travelers on a tighter budget or those who prefer to travel by land and enjoy the scenery.

Driving is another viable option, especially for families or groups traveling together. The North-South Expressway (PLUS Highway) provides a direct route from Kuala Lumpur to Johor Bahru. The drive is approximately 320 kilometers and takes about 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic. Toll charges can add up, with estimated costs for the journey from KL to JB being around MYR 40-50 one way. This offers flexibility and the ability to make stops along the way.

Best Time to Visit Johor Bahru

Johor Bahru enjoys a tropical rainforest climate, characterized by high temperatures and humidity throughout the year. The best time to visit for most Malaysian travelers is generally during the drier months, which typically fall between March and October. During this period, you can expect more sunshine and less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions.

While rain can occur at any time, the monsoon season usually brings heavier downpours, particularly from November to February. However, even during these months, rain showers are often short-lived, and you can still enjoy your trip by planning indoor activities or visiting attractions that are less affected by weather. Traveling during the off-peak seasons, outside of major Malaysian holidays, can also offer a more relaxed experience and potentially better accommodation rates.

Food and Dining Near Johor Bahru — What Malaysian Travelers Must Try

Johor Bahru is a culinary delight, offering a diverse range of dishes that reflect Malaysia's multicultural heritage. A breakfast staple that you absolutely must try is Nasi Lemak, the national dish. Served with fragrant coconut rice, spicy sambal, anchovies, peanuts, and a hard-boiled egg, it's a flavorful start to any day. Many local eateries and even some hotel breakfast spreads offer this iconic dish.

For a taste of wok-fried noodles, Char Kway Teow is a must-try. This popular dish features flat rice noodles stir-fried with prawns, cockles, bean sprouts, chives, and dark soy sauce, giving it a distinct smoky flavor. Look for stalls that cook it over charcoal for an authentic taste. It's a satisfying and widely available option across Johor Bahru.

Another beloved Malaysian classic is Roti Canai, a flaky flatbread often served with dhal (lentil curry) or other curries. It’s a versatile dish perfect for breakfast, lunch, or a late-night snack. You can find variations like Roti Telur (with egg) or Roti Pisang (with banana). Many mamak stalls and Indian Muslim restaurants serve excellent Roti Canai.

No culinary exploration of Malaysia is complete without trying Laksa, a spicy noodle soup. Johor Bahru has its own unique version, often featuring a rich, fish-based gravy. The flavors are robust and comforting. You can also find other regional variations of Laksa, each offering a distinct taste profile. For a sweet and savory treat, Satay, grilled skewers of marinated meat (chicken or beef) served with peanut sauce, cucumber, and onions, is another local favorite.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Johor Bahru

When visiting Johor Bahru, it's appreciated to be mindful of local customs and traditions. Malaysia is a Muslim-majority country, so dressing modestly, especially when visiting religious sites like mosques, is recommended. This generally means covering shoulders and knees. Malaysians are generally friendly and welcoming, and a polite greeting like "Selamat Pagi" (Good Morning) or "Terima Kasih" (Thank You) goes a long way.

For safety, Johor Bahru is generally a safe city for tourists, but it's always wise to exercise standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and keep your valuables secure. Avoid displaying excessive wealth and be cautious of unsolicited offers or scams. In case of emergencies, the national emergency number is 999, which connects you to the police, ambulance, and fire services.

To enhance your travel experience, several apps are highly useful for Malaysian travelers. Grab is indispensable for e-hailing transportation, offering convenient and cashless rides. Touch 'n Go eWallet is essential for various payments, including tolls, parking, and retail purchases. MySejahtera, the government's contact tracing app, may still be useful for checking into certain venues. Having these apps on your smartphone will make navigating and managing your trip much smoother.

Actually, if it was clean, everyone would like to stay here. The bottom of the bed was already black... That's why it felt uncomfortable, I'm afraid the air in the room would be unhealthy. It doesn't feel suitable for families. Please improve your hotel... customer comfort is number 1.

1. The overpowering smell of air freshener that they sprayed was intolerable especially since there wasn't any window to help ventilate the room. All those chemicals trapped inside the room and agitated/circulated by the air cond blower resulted in me having one of the worst migraine attack I've ever experienced in my life and wasn't even able to get a single second of sleep. 2. The pillows was of such poor quality that I had to layer both pillows with 2 pieces of bath towels which made it barely firm enough to support my head but wasn't supportive/comfortable enough to help ease my migraine. 3. There wasn't any internet connection. 4. The TV wasn't working.
