Stunning location, fantastic villas
The location is absolute paradise and the villas, restaurant, pool bar are all very luxurious and designed to make you feel relaxed and special. We'd called here for 8 nights after 3 days in KL for our honeymoon. Going through Kota Kinabalu you can only reach this island through the resort's dedicated boat shuttle. They run very often and will accommodate anything for you (my husband's e-cig broke while there and a member of staff went to the mainland to get him a replacement!) Food was amazing in both the buffet style restaurant, and the seafood rooftop restaurant (where they gave me and my husband a special table due to us celebrating our honeymoon). All the staff actually for our first few days greeted us by name and said congratulations. It was lovely. We arranged numerous excursions with the hotel while there, including snorkelling and kayaking. And on our last day before leaving for the airport we spent the morning in the beautiful library (as it was raining). The only drawback I would say is their lack of night life. Through the day there's plenty to do, but on a night it seemed almost mandatory to have dinner and then go back to your villa as the only place to have a drink and sit down was the pool bar (which wasn't very comfortable on a night time and had very quite, almost drowsy music!) But if you want luxury, wildlife and to relax in the warm waters of the South China Sea, this is ideal for you. We travelled in July 2016.

Very Disappointed
This is actually my first time to write a negative review. I stayed in the resort for 5 days. To be honest, my room was fine, however, the service was seriously disappointing as a luxury resort. Here are some examples: - Food: Not that good but no choice. - Massage: I bought a package with free 60 or 90 (Can't remember) minutes. But I could feel that the lady was fooling around with me. - Postal service: I wrote 10 postcards and asked a reception lady to send them for me. She charged me a stamp 5 times more than usual. I understood that but none of the postcards arrived even though I've been waiting for months. It doesn't make sense that all postcards are lost at the same time unless she didn't send them at all. I sent an email to ask what happened. Their reply was slow and not sincere. Sad to have such a bad experience.

Paradise
We have had a wonderful time at Gaya Island. The place was like Paradise. Everything was okay. The nature, hotel, room but also the friendly people at the restaurant, reception and swimming pool. Also the sunrise was beautiful.

Heaven!
Having read the reviews for Gaya Island resort prior to our visit - I was nervous - really nervous. There seem to be a ton of mixed reviews. After having spent six days here - I have no idea why people are giving this place negative reviews. Gaya Island resort is INCREDIBLE!!! Are the beaches Maldive clear? No. But you're in Borneo, not the Maldives. Is the food cheap? No. But you're at a five star, luxury resort - what do you expect? Is this place the Burj Al Arab? No. But you're not paying burj prices for a room. I'm a bit embarrassed for the people giving this place negative reviews because there is too much sand at the beach. I guess the clientele you get at a five star is a bit more high maintenance than your average traveller. The rooms are stunning. The lead-in is massive, clean and well-designed. Some are along the hills which I can see could be slightly annoying. But if you're not able to walk, simply ask for a room closer to pool. The service is impeccable. Special thank you to Rajaei, Kaka, Ruddy and Laila. They really went out of their way to make our time here, special. The food is stellar - every thing we ate was delicious and there was plenty of choice. We did not eat at the seafood or Japanese restaurant so can't speak on those. However the Feast Village (Buffett and made to order restaurant), the pool bar, and the restaurant at the private beach - all so good. We found we only needed breakfast and dinner (even that was a bit too much food). All you can eat dinner at feast village came to about £17pp. Didn't break the bank. Drinks were average London prices. Yes, you can see the city of Kota Kinabalu from the beach which is a bit strange in all honesty - but not too intrusive and didn't ruin our time here. I would highly suggest visiting the private beach and maybe bring your own snorkels (which you can purchase cheaply at the pier before your boat to the island). As a travel agent in the UK, I will be confidently selling this property to my clients. (And before there are any questions - I came as a regular guest and this is my honest review).
