Your Travel Guide to Sandakan as a Malaysian Traveler

How to Get to Sandakan from Kuala Lumpur and Major Malaysian Cities

The most efficient way to travel to Sandakan from Kuala Lumpur and other major cities in Peninsular Malaysia is by air. Several airlines operate flights to Sandakan Airport (SDK), with journey times typically around 2.5 to 3 hours. Fares can vary significantly based on the booking time and airline, but budget-friendly options are often available if you book in advance. You can easily book flight tickets on Traveloka for competitive prices.

For those who prefer overland travel, bus services are available, though this is a considerably longer journey. Buses typically depart from major cities and involve ferry crossings or long drives through Sabah. The travel time can extend to over 20 hours, making it a less practical option for most travelers aiming to maximize their time in Sandakan. Bus fares are generally lower than flights, ranging from MYR 100 to MYR 200 depending on the route and service.

Driving to Sandakan is also an option for those already in Sabah or East Malaysia. The road network within Sabah is developing, and while direct highway routes like those in Peninsular Malaysia are less common, you can navigate using GPS. Be prepared for longer travel times and potential toll charges, which vary by route. For most travelers coming from Peninsular Malaysia, booking a flight remains the most recommended and time-efficient method.

Best Time to Visit Sandakan

Sandakan experiences a tropical rainforest climate, meaning it is warm and humid throughout the year. The best time to visit Sandakan generally falls between March and October, which corresponds to the drier season. During these months, you can expect less rainfall, making it more pleasant for outdoor activities like visiting wildlife sanctuaries or exploring the town's attractions.

The period from November to February often sees more rainfall, characteristic of the monsoon season. While rain showers can occur at any time in a tropical climate, this period might experience more frequent and heavier downpours. However, even during these months, Sandakan remains a viable destination, and you might find fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, offering a different kind of travel advantage.

Food and Dining Near Sandakan — What Malaysian Travelers Must Try

Sandakan's culinary scene is a delightful exploration of Sabah's diverse flavors. A must-try is the local Laksa, which often features a unique broth distinct from its counterparts in other Malaysian states. The seafood here is exceptionally fresh, given Sandakan's coastal location. Look for restaurants serving grilled fish, butter prawns, and spicy squid for an authentic taste of the sea.

Another local specialty to seek out is the Tuaran Mee, a type of egg noodle often stir-fried with various ingredients. For a taste of traditional Sabahan fare, try Hinava, a raw fish salad marinated in lime juice, chili, and ginger, similar to ceviche. These dishes offer a genuine culinary experience that reflects the local heritage and ingredients.

Don't forget to sample popular Malaysian staples like Nasi Lemak and Roti Canai, which are readily available and often prepared with a local twist. Many hawker stalls and local eateries offer these dishes. For a sweet finish, try local desserts or tropical fruits like durian, rambutan, and lanzones when they are in season. Exploring these food options is a key part of experiencing Sandakan.

When dining, especially in areas known for seafood like Sim-sim Village, you'll find numerous restaurants offering fresh catches prepared in various styles. Many of these establishments are family-run and provide a casual, authentic dining atmosphere. Always check for halal certification if you require it, as many eateries in Sandakan are Muslim-friendly.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Sandakan

Sandakan is a melting pot of cultures, with Malay, Chinese, and indigenous communities coexisting. When visiting religious sites like temples or churches, it's respectful to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Malaysians are generally known for their hospitality, and engaging with locals can enrich your travel experience. Always be polite and show respect for local customs and traditions.

Safety in Sandakan is generally good, similar to other Malaysian cities. However, it's always wise to take standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and keep your valuables secure. Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. For any emergencies, the national emergency number is 999, which connects you to police, ambulance, and fire services.

To navigate Sandakan and manage your travel needs, several apps are highly recommended. Grab is essential for e-hailing transportation, making it easy to get around the town and to nearby attractions. A navigation app like Google Maps will be invaluable for finding your way. For payments, ensure you have a digital wallet like Touch 'n Go or access to mobile banking apps from Malaysian banks.

MySejahtera, the Malaysian government's health and contact tracing app, may still be useful for checking into certain venues or for health advisories. Having these apps on your smartphone will significantly streamline your travel experience in Sandakan, allowing for smoother logistics and better preparedness during your visit.

The soft aspects were very good. The facilities included an elevator, a TV, and a shower with warm water. However, perhaps due to the building's age, the electricity on our floor completely went out in the middle of the night, resulting in a blackout. There was no air conditioning, and we couldn't charge our devices, which was very inconvenient. They couldn't restore the power, so they moved us to a room on another floor where the electricity was still on, but it smelled a bit musty and was a local room for Muslims, so it wasn't very practical. Since we only needed a place to sleep, we opened the window and stayed in our original room until morning. There was a kettle, but it was either broken or the electricity was insufficient, so we couldn't use it. There was Wi-Fi, but it was very weak and not very usable. The building's hardware is a bit problematic, but everything else was more than adequate considering the price of the accommodation.

In the end they let me to check in thank God. What's upset me, its already past midnight (just arrived from kk driving) during my check in they just told me that the elevator is not functioning and our room is at level 4, also the there's problem with the water. Since its already late, my whole family decided just to stay here for the night because of tiredness from a long drive.

The toilet part is bad. There is no pipe/hose for the toilet. Guests need to fill themselves using the shower pipe. The prepared buckets and dippers also climb. The heater in the toilet is turned off earlier in the evening. Just found out there is a timing for the heater too.

Trust me, don't book this hotel, horrible hotel, you will regret it! I'm sorry to give it a bad rating, the worst hotel that I've been, I can get a better hotel with this price. Old hotel, worst conditions, lack of maintenance, very bad and old facilities, no wifi, drinking water not provided, TV no function, mold and smelly toilet, lighting spoiled, low flow of shower water with cold water (night), the lift is most scary.

It's OK for budget hotels, for people who don't like noise, close to interesting places.

Staff are friendly, but they said my payment didn't go through although I just paid through this app online. I got all the receipts of payment with me as proof.

Room provided different from photo shown. No heater, no wardrobe, only one socket at the aircon. Bed and cleanliness consider good though.

Usually I will say i'm satisfied. (I have stay in this hotel very often) But this time my stay was not so bad pleasant because the hotel have no hot water. I guess their boiler is broken. The hotel should notify the customer earlier or maybe offer discount or something to compensate such problem.

Good location. However the hotel was rundown and poorly maintained. A lot of room to improve on cleanliness.😉

Reasonable price but a bit old-fashioned accommodation of her design, the internet line is very damp and the phone line is dull, the room is clean and satisfying.
