Great Escape
Went to Japamala for a short trip with the husband just to get away from all the stress at work. That was exactly what we got! Friendly staffs, a beautiful room, the serene beach all to ourselves.. not forgetting the DELICIOUS food. Its Muslim friendly so no worries! The staffs will always accommodate! We got the Sea Cliff Room. View was great but beware of monkeys - one actually tried opening our door so make sure to keep it locked. Snorkelling was nice too although there were not a lot of fishes and the jellyfishes only came up on the last day when we were leaving. Definitely a place to relax, unwind and enjoy. We totally loved our stay there, wished we had stayed longer!

We enjoyed every single minute at Japamala! Nice and beautiful place, the atmosphere and the enviorment is just amazing. Best place to just relax and get away from everything. The most kindly staffs and manager. Delicious food and extraordinary service. A lot of complimenteries, like water, kayak, snorkling equipments, small dessert in the evening etc. We strongly reccomend Japamala to everyone, especially couples!

A great experience!
I don’t usually write reviews unless a review is worth writing in my opinion. I have to say the resort is wonderful, aside from being absolutely stunning and here's why. The staff are wonderful and work incredibly hard. Our room was good and I don’t really have complaints. The security of the room however was slightly frustrating but I guess that is to be expected at a Jungle resort. More specifically I couldn't nip out for a stroll without locking in the other inhabitant and vice versa. They use a wooden block with a padlock, to keep out the monkeys I'm told. I'm left wondering whether a more innovative way of securing the door is available. The beach The beach too is stunning and the staff work tirelessly to maintain the resort. The water is crystal clear and turquiose in colour. There were plenty of loungers together with towels. Staff kindly provided snorkeling equipment and also a kayak, which I made good use of. Getting there My wife and I were travelling from Singapore. We checked out of our hotel and went to the bus station. By the time we got to the port at Mersing we found out the boat had already left which was a tad annoying. The staff at the port helped us get to Tanjung Gemok which offered another route to the port at Genting, Tioman Island. After a 45 minute bus/coach journey we had to wait around a further two hours before setting off on the ferry. There is little activity in these ports it had to be said, one just has to wait around with not too much to see, although on the way back from, Mersing saw a bit more life. Fortunately for us Genting was the first stop on the boat ride. The staff at Japamala knew the boat timings and were on call to get us to the resort which maybe took 5-10 mins. Door to door it took the best part of a days travel but well worth it on arrival in comparison to the hustle and bustle of the city. Wi-Fi One thing which was of small frustration was the lack of internet connectivity, again this it to be expected on a remote island and I don’t really wish to complain. If it’s an island getaway you want -it’s what you’ll get. I need to buy tickets online. Food I was pleasantly surprised that the food matched the cost- well why wouldn’t it? You often find that the prices are inflated to reflect the remoteness of islands but here the food by in large matched the cost. I won’t lie it is pretty costly and there little or no alternatives. If money isn’t a problem then you could stay here a max 7 days in my opinion. There are two options in terms of cuisine are the Italian restaturant (which perhaps reflects the owners nationality if nothing else) and the Thai and Vietnamese restaurant. My wife and I spent most of our time at the latter and their food couldn't be recommended highly enough. Weather We stayed 4 nights in October and one of my main concerns was the weather. Broadly the weather was good and snorkelling at Coral Island was a highlight. On the day the weather was not great, my wife took the opportunity to get a massage while I went for a walk to the nearest town - Genting, through the jungle. Fortunately for me I had all the right gear to get me through it. Seeing some of the other resorts at Genting made my realise how lucky we were to stay at Japamala. Be warned that if the weather isn’t great options are even more limited. Summary All in all this is a fantastic location and a beautiful one. The staff make it in my opinion, so many small touches which go a long way. I feel like I’m going to miss them and for that reason I’d consider returning.

A fabulous 7 nights of chill
We have just arrived back from what was an amazing 7 nights and days of relaxation. We stayed in a tree top chalet and loved the rustic feel and the fact we were amongst the jungle life. I think people forget that they are staying in the heart of the jungle life and things may get a bit worn over time. We felt the rooms were well kept and comfortable. There was a mini bar on offer and every night a small personalised note was added at your sunset turndown with the chosen scent you selected on arrival. The staff were wonderful and made us feel very welcome and even got to learn our famous drinks order of 2 ginger ales, which on leaving they actually packed us two for the boat ride back to mersing. I could not fault their attention and they were always warm. I could not fault the food I had several lobsters which was caught that day and my husband regularly had the beef tenderloin which was cooked so well it could be cut with a butter knife. Also if anyone can, try the chocolate ice cake as it’s to die for 😘 The free evening cocktails were never just 1 and they would always make sure you got 3 or 4 in that time as well as small snacks to try. You could also eat your dinner at the end of the pier bar which was relaxed and lovely esp if there was a storm brewing out to sea and you could watch the lightning. I also got to indulge in the most amazing upper body massage which left me feeling so relaxed and helped with my ongoing headache issues. Whilst some parts of the resort are a little run down there are people there constantly fixing things and I think people should look at the location of these rooms before making judgements. I think bit by bit things are being updated and changed. They are a rustic resort and that’s what you get. I have stayed in jungle resorts before and all have similar issues due to the rainfall they receive and closeness to nature. Your so close, you have to watch out the monkeys don’t steal your afternoon snacks which are brought to you complementary (they even swiped the plate they were on 😂) The snorkelling around the resort is good and my husband went out a few times as well as out on the kayak whilst I sat and soaked up the sun and dipped my feet in the sea. The WiFi isn’t the best BUT again I think you need to think of your location and in some ways it added to the feel as it forces you to put the phone down and actually talk to people. We have never slept so much and we think it was because we didn’t have our phones in hand at night and first thing in the morning. One of the best nights we had was when dinner was served on the beach for all the guest where everything was bbq. It was such a lovely evening and a great idea as there was a small bonfire lit and lanterns all around. I would happily return to this resort again and hope to again when in Malaysia Thanks again for a restful stay 😀
