Teluk Cempedak or Cempedak Bay is located approximately 5 kilometres east from the town centre in Kuantan and Beserah fishing village. It is facing South China Sea and also known as Palm Beach in Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia. The white sandy beach and casuarinas and pine trees line the coast, with some rocky promontories are among the features of Teluk Cempedak. This bay has become a popular spot for water sport.

However, visitors must be aware of red flag and always check with beach safety guard on the wind status. RED indicate very dangerous due to strong wind and wave. Besides that, along the beach, there are many stores selling souvenirs and local food. There are also guesthouses and choices of hotels near the beach.

How to Get There

By Car

From Kuala Lumpur, it takes around 4 hours and 30 minutes to reach Teluk Cempedak by using Segamat- Kuantan road.

By Plane

There are flights daily to Kuantan Airport from Subang and Kuala Lumpur International either by Firefly, Malaysia Airlines or Malindo Air. Once you reach the airport, it takes about 30 minutes to Teluk Cempedak by using Pintasan Kuantan road.

Cherating Turtle Sanctuary

The Cherating Turtle Sanctuary was established by the Department of Fisheries in 1972 as turtle hatchery and situated at Chendor Beach or Pantai Chendor. In 1997, a centre was built on the 0.33-hectare site in order to protect endangered turtles when they land on shore to lay their eggs. On 1 June 1998, Cherating Turtle Sanctuary was officially opened to the public. Visitors come to learn about turtles, purchase turtle-themed souvenirs, and watch the turtles lay their eggs on shore. The Sanctuary also allows visitors to release young turtles back to sea. There are 7 species of marine turtles in the world and 4 of these species land and lay their eggs on Malaysian beaches. They are the Leatherback Turtle, Green Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle and Olive Ridley Turtle. The workers from the centre collect the turtle eggs that are laid on the beach, so they can be nurtured and hatched in a protected environment between April and August every year. However, as years go by, turtles are constantly facing challenges and difficulty in finding the right direction to the nesting grounds, and the task of seeking out new nesting grounds to replace old nesting grounds which had been destroyed. Young turtles take around 20 - 50 years before they become adults with the ability to reproduce and this can make the turtles to extinct even faster. According to news report, some turtles died from tumour growths in the stomach, from swallowing plastic bags and other toxic materials disposed by humans and turtles were killed after getting tangled in fishing nets when they swim above water for air.

Kuantan River Cruise

This river cruise takes around 45 minutes which run two to four times a day run from the pier out towards the mouth of the Kuantan River under the Tanjung Lumpur Bridge. The cruise starts at the Shahbandar Jetty which is located just beside the Municipal Council Office near the Esplanade. Visitors can discover fishes, crawlies, crustaceans, and monitor lizard during cruising. The cruise also take you to mangrove area known as the “Board Walk” which is 1000 meters long track. Besides day cruise, the evening Firefly Cruise leaves at 19:45 and takes roughly two hours which goes in the opposite direction heading upriver to areas for viewing fireflies. A minimum of four passengers is required for the trip to go and day and night cruises are available every day except Wednesday at a price of RM18/adult and RM15/child. Visitors are reminded to wear life jackets during cruising as part of safety reason.
