Your Travel Guide to Miri as a Malaysian Traveler

How to Get to Miri from Kuala Lumpur and Major Malaysian Cities

The most convenient way to travel to Miri from Kuala Lumpur and other major Malaysian cities is by air. Numerous airlines operate daily flights to Miri Airport (MZV). Flight durations are typically around 2 to 2.5 hours, with fares varying based on the season and booking time, often ranging from MYR 200 to MYR 500 for a round trip. You can easily book flight tickets through Traveloka for competitive prices.

For budget-conscious travelers, bus services are available, though this is a significantly longer journey. Buses depart from major cities like Kuala Lumpur and Kuching, with travel times extending to over 20 hours. The cost is considerably lower, typically between MYR 80 to MYR 150 one-way.

Driving to Miri is also an option for those who prefer a road trip. The journey from Kuala Lumpur involves traversing Peninsular Malaysia and then crossing to Borneo, which requires a ferry or flight for the vehicle. The total driving distance is substantial, and toll charges can add up. It's a journey best suited for those with ample time and a desire for extensive exploration of Malaysia's diverse landscapes.

Best Time to Visit Miri

Miri experiences a tropical rainforest climate, meaning it is warm and humid throughout the year. The best time to visit Miri for outdoor activities and exploring Mulu National Park is generally during the drier months, which typically fall between March and October. During this period, rainfall is less frequent, making cave exploration and jungle trekking more comfortable.

However, it's important to note that Sarawak can experience rain at any time. The monsoon season usually occurs from November to February, bringing heavier rainfall. While this might deter some outdoor activities, it can also mean fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices. Regardless of the season, always be prepared for humidity and occasional showers.

Food and Dining Near Miri — What Malaysian Travelers Must Try

Miri, like much of Sarawak, boasts a unique culinary scene influenced by its diverse ethnic groups. A must-try is Sarawak Laksa, a fragrant and rich noodle soup often made with a base of shrimp and coconut milk, flavored with a complex blend of spices. It's a comforting and flavorful dish that truly represents the region.

Another local delicacy is Kolo Mee, a dry noodle dish typically tossed with minced meat, shallots, and a light, savory sauce. It's often served with char siu (barbecued pork) or minced pork. You can find excellent versions of Kolo Mee in many local eateries and coffee shops throughout Miri.

For those who enjoy seafood, Miri's coastal location means fresh catches are readily available. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid are popular choices, often prepared with local spices and served with sambal. Don't forget to try Kuih Lapis, a visually appealing layered cake that is a popular sweet treat across Sarawak.

When exploring Miri, you'll find a wide array of dining options, from humble hawker stalls to more established restaurants. Many of these establishments serve authentic Malaysian dishes, ensuring that you can enjoy familiar favorites like Nasi Lemak and Satay alongside regional specialties. Always look for halal-certified eateries if that is a requirement for your dining.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Miri

Miri is a melting pot of cultures, with Malay, Chinese, and indigenous Dayak communities forming its social fabric. When visiting religious sites like mosques or temples, it's respectful to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Malaysians are generally known for their hospitality, so engaging with locals can enrich your travel experience.

Safety in Miri is generally good, with low crime rates. However, as with any travel, it's wise to take standard precautions: be aware of your surroundings, secure your belongings, and avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. For emergencies, the national emergency number is 999.

To enhance your trip, consider downloading a few essential apps. Grab is indispensable for e-hailing transportation and food delivery. Touch 'n Go eWallet is useful for various transactions, including parking and toll payments. MySejahtera, the government's contact tracing app, may also be required for entry into certain venues.

Familiarizing yourself with basic Malay phrases can also be helpful, though English is widely spoken in tourist areas and hotels. Understanding local customs and showing respect for traditions will ensure a more harmonious and enjoyable visit to Miri and Sarawak.

The rooms are nice, but a lot of them like ours don’t have Wifi which in these days is a Nono! Breakfast buffet is including and was of good quality and good selection. Dinner at the Hotel was low quality. Didn’t enjoy any of my 3 evening meals. The grilled chicken was like rubber.

This is a high end hotel very close to Mulu National Park. The rooms are spacious clean and comfortable. Common areas are charming airy and comfortable The dinner buffet is generous if unexciting but considering the remoteness of Mulu does well to cater to most tastes What makes this hotel excellent are the staff. Exceptionally helpful polite and charming.

Horrible condition of the room first night room 128 ceiling start to leak when rain, room 129 air conditioning not cold and few lights not working. Days 3 (17/8) the early transport suppose to be 630am as informed by the check in counter during check in . We reach the reception before 630 am, But the lousy attitude front counter service lady, told us 645 am.. but she did not do anything till we go back and feedback to her few times.. she told us not her problem (then is our problem that we have chose such a reputation hotel.) after few round of requests then she takes action..she made few bad remarks on us .. before we left the for the tour. I think is totally not acceptable...lucky we never missed the guided tour ( canopy walk) which start 7am, we reached the park 717am.. the group and guide is waiting for 5 of us. This hotel totally no WiFi.. and not accessible to hand phone telecommunications in the room.. we are like living in jungle... From reception to your room there are no cover. So if rain you need to use your umbrella to walk to your room. if you are just visiting the national park... No need to waste money for a low class hotel.

Family of 5 stayed for 3 nights. The rooms are really comfortable and in good condition. Nice to have the pool at the end of a days trekking. The location is fantastic and feels very luxurious to have all this in such a remote location ant the edge of the jungle. The one downside is the food. It is expensive (5x local restaurants), many items not available on the menu and the quality not discernibly different from the local restaurants / park HQ. On balance, I would still recommend this place.

Room was lovely and spacious, clean and comfortable although bath towels were not luxurious and fluffy but rather a little on the thin side. Staff on resort were really friendly. Food at buffet restaurant was just ok for what we paid. A little uninteresting and not what a expect from Marriott. Meats on buffet were processed. No fresh meats, duck or smoked salmon. No selection of cheese. Salad was poor.

Spa very good. Staff very helpful. Better access to shuttle service between Hotel and National Park would improve the overall experience.

The Marriott at Mulu is a piece of luxury and tranquillity within a jungle environment. You can experience the wildlife and spectacle of the rainforest without having to forego the luxury. The room was clean and spacious with a great shower and nice products. The pool wasn’t huge but enough for a lovely refreshing dip and the spa provided a good selection of treatments. Dining was slightly limited but remember where you are!! The only negative to the whole stay was the air con in the gym being broken. Overall- would highly recommend the Mulu Marriott and the Mulu National park is certainly worth the visit.

This hotel is nothing less but breathtaking, we enjoyed every moment we spent here. Rooms are beautiful and clean, you have everything here that you might need. Laundry service, buffet style breakfast, lunch, dinner. Georgeous resting area next to the pool with a bar, smoking area. Wifi in the lobby. Returning to the hotel you get al the comfort you need after a tiring hike.

We went there for our anniversary and my brother’s family joined us for his wife’s birthday trip. We had booked separate rooms but the wonderful people at Marriott upgraded us and gave us connecting rooms which was very convenient. Thanks JJ and team ♥️ they definitely went above and beyond. We really appreciate it!
