I don’t usually bother writing travel reviews, but I felt the need to say just how excellent my stay at Noordin Mews was. Very charming! The service was above and beyond! Every staff member was personable and attentive. The room was also spacious and very comfortable. The pool was a bit small but I still happily used it daily (as it is HOT in December). The location feels a little isolated, but I never felt unsafe as a solo traveler and it’s only 10-15 minutes walk to the touristy areas. George Town is exploding with incredible food, so honestly the walk home after meals was preferred even in the heat. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a wonderful boutique experience.

Your Travel Guide to Pulau Pinang as a Malaysian Traveler

How to Get to Pulau Pinang from Kuala Lumpur and Major Malaysian Cities

Traveling to Pulau Pinang from Kuala Lumpur and other major Malaysian cities is convenient and offers several options to suit different preferences and budgets. For the quickest journey, flying is the most efficient method. Numerous daily flights operate between Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Penang International Airport (PEN). Airlines like Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, and Batik Air offer competitive fares, often ranging from MYR 100 to MYR 300 for a one-way ticket, with a flight duration of approximately 1 hour. Booking your flight in advance can secure better prices.

Alternatively, traveling by bus is a more economical choice. Numerous bus companies operate comfortable express services from Kuala Lumpur's TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) to Penang's Sungai Nibong bus terminal. The journey typically takes around 5 to 6 hours, with ticket prices usually falling between MYR 40 and MYR 70. This option is ideal for those who prefer to travel overland and enjoy the changing scenery.

Driving to Penang is also a popular option for families and groups. The journey from Kuala Lumpur involves using the North-South Expressway. The total distance is about 360 kilometers, and the estimated travel time is 4 to 5 hours, excluding stops. Toll charges can add up to approximately MYR 40-50 for a one-way trip. This provides flexibility for exploring the island at your own pace.

Best Time to Visit Pulau Pinang

Pulau Pinang enjoys a tropical climate year-round, meaning you can expect warm temperatures and humidity regardless of when you visit. However, the best time to plan your trip is generally between December and February. During these months, the weather tends to be drier with less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities, exploring heritage sites, and enjoying the beaches. The northeast monsoon season typically brings more rain from November to March, so if you prefer drier conditions, aim for the earlier part of the year.

The shoulder months, such as March to May and September to October, can also be pleasant, though you might encounter occasional showers. These periods can sometimes offer fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices compared to the peak season. The period from June to August is generally hot and humid, with a higher chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Regardless of the season, always pack light, breathable clothing, sunscreen, and an umbrella or rain jacket for unpredictable weather.

Food and Dining Near Pulau Pinang — What Malaysian Travelers Must Try

Penang is a culinary destination, and no visit is complete without indulging in its iconic dishes. For a true taste of local flavors, you must try Char Kway Teow, a stir-fried flat rice noodle dish cooked over high heat with prawns, cockles, bean sprouts, and chives. Another must-try is Penang Assam Laksa, a tangy and spicy fish-based noodle soup that is distinctively different from other versions found in Malaysia.

Don't leave without sampling Nasi Kandar, a popular dish of steamed rice served with a variety of curries and side dishes, often found in Indian Muslim eateries. For a lighter yet equally delicious option, Roti Canai, a flaky flatbread served with curry, is a breakfast and supper staple. Satay, grilled marinated meat skewers served with peanut sauce, is also a popular choice. Many of these dishes are readily available at hawker stalls and restaurants across the island, with numerous halal-certified options to cater to Muslim travelers.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Pulau Pinang

Penang is a melting pot of cultures, and respecting local customs is key to a pleasant visit. When visiting religious sites like mosques or temples, dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Malaysians are generally friendly and welcoming, but it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying excessive wealth.

For emergencies, the national emergency number is 999. It's advisable to have this number readily accessible. To navigate the island and its attractions efficiently, the Grab app is indispensable for e-hailing services. For payments, ensure you have a Touch 'n Go card or app for tolls and public transport. The MySejahtera app, which was crucial during the pandemic, is still useful for checking venue entry requirements or accessing health information. Familiarizing yourself with these tools will enhance your travel experience in Pulau Pinang.

A very charming property that is just a short walk to the centre of Georgetown. Service was excellent from the moment we arrived until we left. We especially enjoyed the pool and the tasty breakfasts. We stayed in the Sultan Suite which was perfect for our family of 4. We loved Georgetown - and Penang more generally - and if we return we would book to stay at Noordin Mews again without hesitation.

What an incredibly wonderful experience! This is a charming little hideaway tucked away in historic George Town. The space is very special and retains the beauty of a restored shophouse space with clean, minimalist touches. The real beauty of this place though is the incredible dedication and hospitality of the staff who bent over backwards to do what they could to make my stay enjoyable! First rate housekeeping and a lovely breakfast. Will definitely be back!

Excellent welcome from the staff, shout out to Yun Li for going above and beyond to make us feel welcome and knowledgeable about traversing through Penang. She had a lot of great advice and was able to get us restaurant reservations on short notice. The service at Noordin Mews was superb. The doors are quirky though, watch your fingers opening and closing them! There's a public shower and washroom which we were told we could use after we checked out and before we flew out. Overall a positive experience here, especially with the pets that are also welcome at the hotel.

It was an amazing stay for us -- 3 families with our furkids -- Luci, Yoda & Tigger. They got to chill at the cafe while we enjoying the local dishes -- char kuoy teow, curry mee, asam laksa, nyonya kuih etc. The hotel allowed us to grab our favourite food & the team (Anung, Azman, Yun Jie etc ) would unpack & served it. Belinda & Mei are very resourceful and always made our wishes came true. Wonderful ladies and leading the team with excellence service. We took the kids to the beach (a bar recommended by Belinda) for the sand, ocean smell, sea water, breeze, wave splashing on their cutie faces --- just simply wonderful. We already planned to come back for another trip. Thanks Noordin Mews for making our stay FABULOUS!!! Cheers, Kai Lee, Vky, Joanne, Christel & Jazz

It is very cosy, I counted 15 units and is easy for guests n staffs to interact.staffs fulfilled our request for ground floor unit with access to pool & allocate unit 'E' for us. The easy access to pool & lounge were great, and unit was cosy. Location to around places were well reached.

This is a great hotel, given how old it is, it is kept really clean. We stayed in one of the larger rooms with 2 king size beds, this room was very comfortable with a near new bathroom. The other shared facilities are also well kept, there is a nice seating area with some books and games, and the small pool is very refreshing to cool off in the afternoon. It is so nice to stay in a heritage place with character. Breakfast is nice, a bit limited for variety but the Nasi Lemak I had at the hotel one morning was as good as any I have ever had, The staff at the hotel were very friendly and happy to give advice on where to go to eat or things to do. The location is great, whilst it is just outside the heritage city centre it is only a short walk away, with the Komtar bus terminal around the corner if going further afield. I would highly recommend using the local buses, you see so much more than when you just use grab cars all the time. Would recommend this hotel highly, and would stay again if I went back to George Town.
