It’s very basic, but great for wildlife photography and viewing. The food is good, no alcohol, but otherwise a great and reasonable place to stay. I would come back.

Rooms are basic, but of great value for the price, and come equipped with everything you need (including a can of Raid!! Very clean rooms, but it is the jungle). They give wonderful boat tours of the river at a very reasonable price. We weren't fortunate enough to see the elephants, but the guides had an encyclopedic knowledge of the wildlife (of which we saw a ton! Proboscis, orangutang, macaques for days, etc), and they went as far as extending the sunset cruise to inquire with villagers as to where the elephants might be. If they're out there, I imagine they'll find them. Wonderful time! We didn't get the package and found that was more economical for us. Still did two cruises a day, plus easy to find walking paths of your own

Your Travel Guide to Sandakan as a Malaysian Traveler

How to Get to Sandakan from Kuala Lumpur and Major Malaysian Cities

The most convenient way to reach Sandakan from Kuala Lumpur and other major cities in Peninsular Malaysia is by air. Several airlines operate daily flights to Sandakan Airport (SDK). Flight durations are typically around 2 to 2.5 hours, and you can often find fares ranging from MYR 150 to MYR 400 for a one-way ticket, depending on the booking time and airline. Use Traveloka to book flight deals.

For those who prefer overland travel, bus services are available, though this is a significantly longer journey. Buses depart from major terminals like TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) in Kuala Lumpur. The trip can take anywhere from 20 to 24 hours, with ticket prices generally falling between MYR 80 to MYR 150. This option is best suited for travelers with ample time and a desire to see more of Sabah's landscapes.

Driving to Sandakan is also an option for adventurous travelers. The journey involves navigating through various highways and trunk roads across Sabah. While specific toll costs can vary, budget around MYR 50-100 for fuel and tolls for a one-way trip from Kota Kinabalu, for example. This route offers flexibility but requires careful planning and awareness of road conditions.

Best Time to Visit Sandakan

Sandakan enjoys a tropical rainforest climate, meaning it is warm and humid throughout the year. The best time to visit is generally during the drier months, from March to October. During this period, rainfall is less frequent, making it more conducive for outdoor activities like jungle trekking and river cruises, which are popular in the region.

The period from November to February often sees higher rainfall, characteristic of the monsoon season. While this doesn't mean constant rain, expect more frequent showers, which can sometimes affect visibility for wildlife spotting or make jungle trails muddy. However, the lush greenery is at its peak, and you might find fewer crowds and potentially lower prices for accommodation and tours during this off-peak season.

Food and Dining Near Sandakan — What Malaysian Travelers Must Try

Sandakan offers a delightful culinary journey for Malaysian travelers, with a focus on fresh seafood and local Sabahan flavors. One dish you absolutely must try is the Kinabatangan seafood, often prepared simply to highlight its freshness. Grilled fish, prawns, and crabs are readily available and delicious, especially when enjoyed at restaurants overlooking the water.

Don't leave Sandakan without sampling the local version of Laksa. Sabahan Laksa often features a unique broth that differs from its Peninsular counterparts, sometimes incorporating tamarind for a tangy zest. Another local favorite is the Tuaran Mee, a type of egg noodle dish that can be stir-fried or served in soup, known for its springy texture.

For a taste of everyday Malaysian cuisine, look for stalls and eateries serving Nasi Lemak and Roti Canai, which are staples across the country. Many of these will be halal-certified. Exploring the local markets and hawker centers is a great way to discover authentic flavors and experience the local food culture.

Consider trying Hinava, a traditional Kadazan-Dusun dish made from raw fish marinated in lime juice, chili, ginger, and onions. It's a refreshing and unique appetizer that showcases indigenous culinary traditions. Always confirm the halal status if you have dietary requirements, though most local eateries catering to the general public will adhere to halal practices.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Sandakan

Sandakan is a melting pot of cultures, with Malay, Chinese, and indigenous communities coexisting. When visiting religious sites like mosques or temples, it's respectful to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Malaysians are generally welcoming, and a friendly demeanor goes a long way in interactions. Always greet elders with respect.

Safety in Sandakan is generally good, especially in tourist areas. However, like any city, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially at night. Keep valuables secure and avoid displaying excessive wealth. For emergencies, the national emergency number is 999, which connects you to police, ambulance, and fire services.

To enhance your travel experience, several apps are highly recommended. Grab is essential for convenient e-hailing transportation throughout Sandakan and its surroundings. MySejahtera is crucial for health declarations and tracking, as often required for entry into various establishments. A reliable map application like Google Maps will also be invaluable for navigation.

Consider downloading a local phrasebook app if you wish to learn some basic Malay phrases, which can be helpful and appreciated by locals. Having these digital tools readily available on your smartphone will make navigating Sandakan, managing transport, and staying informed much easier during your trip.

Staff were very friendly and helpful, and the river cruise organisation was very efficient. Room was clean, but the ghastly lime green walls clashing with the brown curtains falling off the rails was quite off putting.

Fantastic place to do river cruises. The staff are very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the wildlife. The food was good and had pricing options for those not on a package like me. I loved my stay. My only issue is that the rooms are very damp and mouldy. It is the rainforest and overall I would recommend.

Reasonable room. Air con worked. Was clean enough, but the sink was blocked on arrival. It's an old place and showing it's age. Quite expensive for what you get, but better value I think than other places in Sukau.

We spent 2 nights in Sukau Greenview and we had a great stay there. The lodge organised our pick up from Sepilok and drop off in Sandakan for a fee. We enjoyed the lodge peaceful setting by the river. We went for morning and afternoon river cruise organised by the lodge. We saw many monkeys, some birds, lizards and snakes. Binoculars would be handy as most of the wildlife we saw from some distance. The staff are very polite and helpful. There is free coffee & tea & water available in lodge main building. The meals were simple and tasty. Great value for money.

You're in the jungle so don't expect much and you'll be ok, it is after all a £20 room with aircon. The flyscreens have seen better days and there's holes in them. There's no glass in some of the window vents in our room. The food was so so and dearer than the restaurant up the road so I suggest eating there instead. You don't get a choice of meal, just 'food'! The place is ok, sukau backpackers looked much nicer but no aircon and maybe less good trips. So the tours are good and the guides can be knowledgeable. We saw something on each outing if not the elephants. If you arrange the minivan back to sandakan be warned ours spent a lot of time looking at photos on his phone and not on the road. In the end I had to say something as it was dangerous, after that he drive like Sterling Moss. All in all we enjoyed our stay.

Enjoyed our two nights at Greenview. Very clean and tidy, Jiang runs a tight ship and she was very efficient and organised. Better explanation of tours would be good. Our afternoon cruise was very basic and the guide was not an expert... he didn't know the name of the smaller river we went on. The captain new more... but didn't speak English. Our second cruise was to Abai fishing village. Very luckily we found the elephants eating beside the river. A big group with many little ones. We spent about half an hour watching them before they disappeared into the jungle. Magical. Then on to the village for dinner at a home stay. Meal delicious and a lovely family. Our guide Rossmore? Ross man? (Sorry can't remember) was excellent. Captain of boat was excellent. Fireflies in trees on the way back. Rooms could be improved with a mirror in the bathroom or on the wall, more hooks on the wall or shelves and a chair to sit on. WiFi was nonexistent the entire time. Meals good. Simple meal was adequate for me and represented good value. Cats sit and walk on the tables. Free tea, coffee, water and ice all the time. Recommend you bring own supplies of drinks and snacks as very little available. No tourism locally... not even a t shirt.

This is a great place to stay and do river cruises, walks, etc. It is an easy, inexpensive way to experience Borneo’s nature and wildlife.

My husband and I stayed only for 1 night - we planed to do one afternoon cruise and one morning cruise. Long story short we ended up regretting that we didn't stay longer. The staff has helped us with a transfer from our previous stay in Sepilok, and we have arrived just in time for the cruise. We were greeted by the staff at the premises and briefed about the location, activities etc. Everything is sooo well thought and planned, you are not losing any time there. The staff has optimized the process to the max, great job guys!! The river cruises were absolutely great both of them. We saw a lot of wildlife, proboscis monkeys, birds and even an orangutan. That is what we came for. The guides were full of knowledge and excellent at pointing out wildlife. We had the most basic and delicious breakfast here, fried noodles with vegetables and an egg on top. The room was really big, unfortunately the hot water did not work, but we were so tired to bring it up to the staff as it was late, but for sure they would have fixed it if we asked. The only minus of the room was the bed - quite lumpy and uncomfortable. Overall, GREAT value for money, highly recommend the place. Also the Wi-fi in the restaurant area was impressively good for the middle of the nature.

It’s very basic, but great for wildlife photography and viewing. The food is good, no alcohol, but otherwise a great and reasonable place to stay. I would come back.

The reason you are there is for the boat rides which are excellent. Everything else about this location is very overpriced.

The location is amazing, directly on the banks of the Kinabatangan river. It is local and basic accomadatiin but goid value for money,, dinner and all the river trips arranged by the lidge are great. The kittens were an added entertainment!
