Thai Airways or THAI (TG/THA) is the sole national flag carrier of the Kingdom of Thailand with the vision of being the first-choice airline with “Touches of Thai” and with a slogan “I FLY - Smooth as Silk”. As a Full-Service airline, Thai Airways is currently 53.77% owned by the Government of Thailand.
Thai Airways International Company Limited was founded in 1960 as a Thai Airways Company (TAC) joint venture with Scandinavian Airlines Sytem (SAS). The company was 70% owned by the Thai Government through TAC and 30% owned by SAS. TAC itself is the domestic carrier of Thailand. In 1988, TAC and Thai Airways International Company Limited merged to form Thai Airways International, a single entity airline, as the flag carrier of Thailand.
THAI’s branding is deeply rooted in its corporate value: World Class, High Trust and Thai Touch. In applying the company’s vision and value into the airline’s best practice, THAI makes the most use of technology innovation while proudly declaring Thailand’s cultural values and impressive traditions to the world travelers.
THAI targets to be the first airline in Asia using biofuels. To promote its program known as “Travel Green”, Thai Airways conducted experimental flights in 2011. This is a breakthrough from Thai Airways, along with promo campaigns that attract consumers.
Thai Airways offers four travel classes: Economy Class, Premium Economy Class, Royal Silk Class and Royal First Class. The airline also offers cheap flight tickets. THAI is known for its remarkable comfort and service reflected from its first-class quality Economy Class: spacious seats, Audio Visual on Demand (AVOD) system that offers variety of entertainment from movies to meditation practice. For in-flight meal, passengers of international flights may choose extensive variety of menu as well as religious and dietary preferences. Thai Airways also offers promo flight tickets in certain periods. All of these facilities is the form of commitment focusing on grand services, while providing cheap flight fares.
Checked baggage allowance for Economy Class (domestic & international routes) is with maximum weight 20 kg and an extra 10 kg for infant that does not occupy a seat. For international routes to and from USA/Canada, passenger is allowed to have maximum weight of 23 kg with another 23 kg for infant that does not occupy a seat. In addition, carry-on baggage must not exceed 7 kg.

In 1960, Thai Airways Company (TAC) entered partnership with Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) and gained the official brand name Thai Airways or THAI. The national flag carrier successfully reaped benefits from the partnership with the foreign institution, particularly in marketing and managerial expertise.
THAI’s initial international flights commenced from Bangkok to 9 destinations within Asia. In 1971, THAI launched its first intercontinental flights to Australia, then to Europe a year later, and to North America in 1980.
After 17 years being partnered with SAS, in April 1977 the Government of Thailand acquired SAS shares in THAI and officially turned it into a 100% national asset.
In 1988, THAI made a major change. In order to establish a single national carrier, the international operation merged with Thai Airways Company that serves domestic operation. The merger formed the present Thai Airways International.
In 1991, Thai Airways offered its shares to the public and became the largest ever undertaken in the country called Mueang Thai by its citizens. Six years later, THAI became one of the co-founders of Star Alliance along with United Airlines, Air Canada, Lufthansa and SAS.
In 2004, the company started to offer shares to its employees through the Employee Securities Option Plan (ESOP) at 15 Baht per share.
A year later, THAI had its first nonstop flights from Bangkok to New York, followed by another nonstop flights to Los Angeles (lasted until 2012). The flights to New York ceased in 2008 due to high fuel costs. The airline suffered from the biggest loss for the first time in history in 2008.
In 2010, THAI went through a major fleet renewal and significantly improved services as seen today. The new Boeing 787 and Airbus A350 were added and existing cabins were refurbished.
As of 2012, THAI received its first Airbus A380 specifically aimed to serve its main European routes.
