For me, it was very easy to redeem. Just scan the QR at the machine that has a passport scanner, scan your passport, select the date to start the pass, and done! (basically just follow the instructions given 😅). Mine had no issue redeeming at the machine, but my friend had to redeem at the counter because the machine could not read the passport. This pass is really worth it if you plan to ride the Shinkansen a lot. I barely used my Icoca card in Hiroshima because I could go to tourist spots with the Maple Bus, which is covered by the pass.

The JR Pass is a life saver, and I think it's a must-have when you go to Japan.
