My stay at Duke Romana in Bucharest was, without exaggeration, one of the most stressful and disappointing hotel experiences I’ve ever had. The entire process felt like a bad joke that kept getting worse.
First, the check in system is a nightmare. Everything is done online through an overly complicated, multi-step process that assumes you’re not just computer literate, but practically an IT specialist. And even if you are, it doesn’t matter — because their software doesn’t work properly. I wasted HOURS just trying to check in because the system kept failing. Nothing smooth, nothing intuitive, nothing functional.
After all that frustration, I finally received two access codes — one for the main door and one for the room. Guess what? Neither code worked. Not one. So, there I was, standing outside like an idiot, calling their so called “support,” because this hotel has zero staff on-site. No reception, no human presence, no one to help you in person. Everything is done through online messages, which is absurd for a hotel in the capital city of Romania.
And here comes the most ridiculous part: when I finally reached someone on the phone, I was told they do not speak Romanian. Let me repeat that — a hotel in Bucharest, Romania, told me they only speak English and French, but NOT Romanian. I was born in Romania, I speak the language, and I still couldn’t communicate with the staff of a hotel operating in the country’s capital. It’s like checking into a hotel in the U.S. and being told, “Sorry, we only speak Chinese and Arabic, not English.” Completely unacceptable.
This raises a serious question: What is a Romanian guest supposed to do if they don’t speak English or French and aren’t tech savvy enough to navigate this broken digital check in system? The answer is simple — they’re out of luck. And that is shameful.
As for the hotel itself: dirty, cramped, outdated, and poorly maintained. Nothing about the physical space made up for the chaos of the check in process.
Overall, I do not recommend this hotel at all. Avoid it. Choose a normal hotel or even a basic motel where an actual human being greets you, helps you, and doesn’t require you to be a computer expert or a multilingual acrobat just to enter your room.
Duke Romana is the perfect example of how NOT to run a hotel.
