We had a wonderful stay at the Caju Hotel and are so glad we chose it for our first visit to Madeira. The location in the old town is fantastic, with excellent cafes, bakeries and restaurants nearby, and most places of interest (plus bus stops) easily walkable. It made exploring Funchal incredibly convenient. Our room was aesthetically furnished and comfortable, with thoughtful amenities including robes and slippers, plenty of hangers, toiletries, an iron and ironing board, and lots of lighting and power sockets. We also loved the little balcony, which was perfect for letting in the lovely fresh spring air. The shower pressure was excellent, and housekeeping did a superb job throughout our stay, keeping everything replenished without us needing to ask. The included a la carte breakfast was another highlight. Everything we tried was delicious, and there was plenty of choice even over a full week. The team also kindly accepts pre-orders for early starts and can prepare takeaway breakfasts for guests heading out early. Service throughout the hotel was consistently excellent. Everyone we encountered was friendly, warm, and genuinely helpful, which made us feel very welcome throughout our stay. A special thank you as well for helping arrange the return of my AirPods, which I accidentally left behind. I really appreciate the effort and kindness shown in helping reunite me with my lost property. Thank you again to the whole team for making our stay so wonderful!

I really loved this hotel. It’s modern inside and perfectly located in the center of Funchal. The place is spotless, the beds are comfortable, and the shower was excellent. For one person, the room size was just right, but if you’re traveling with someone else, you’ll definitely want a larger room. The only drawback was parking. You have to use a parkade about 5–10 minutes down the road at €20 a night, which can be a bit of a hassle. There’s nowhere to pull up in front of the hotel without blocking the road, so carrying luggage across cobblestone sidewalks isn’t the easiest. I had to haul mine most of the way. That said, I’d absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it. While you’re in Funchal, I suggest grabbing sushi at Yuki and checking out Brasa for a fire-cooked meal. Don’t miss out on a Poncha while you’re there.

If I were rating the property by appearance only, it would be 5 stars. However, we did encounter issues during our stay that made our experience here less than ideal. We noticed a stain on the carpet near the shower during checkin but didn’t think much of it. While bathing that evening, the shower did not drain and would have flooded the room if we had not turned the water off. We notified the front desk of the issue. They responded a bit nonchalantly and said someone would be by to fix the issue tomorrow. We had been traveling and walking all day and needed a shower so we asked if there was an unoccupied room we could shower in. Initially, we were told no and that we would just have to wait until ours was fixed. After some insistence, the front desk finally made some calls and was given authorization to take us to an unoccupied room to shower. The next day, we left to explore Funchal. When we returned, sadly, the same person was working the desk. We asked if the issue was resolved and we were told that it was fixed and that the shower was operating properly. This turned out to not be true as the shower began to flood again during use and water reached the stain on the carpet and the room began to smell of mold and mildew very badly. We again addressed the issue with the front desk person who seemed as if they were annoyed by us like we were being unreasonable. Ultimately, they never fixed the drain and we had to deal with the bad smell for three day. Avoid room 102.

Such a lovely hotel. Rooms are very charming - modern but with character. Super clean. Best of all the staff went above and beyond without us even asking. We were checking out at 6am for an early flight, and staff packed us a to-go breakfast (breakfast usually opens 8am) without us even asking. Obrigada!
