The airport is about 3 miles (5 km) northwest of downtown, usually a short drive depending on traffic.
The nickname honours aviator Charles Lindbergh, whose Spirit of St. Louis aircraft was built in San Diego. Its codes are SAN (IATA) and KSAN (ICAO).
There are two: Terminal 1, which has been rebuilt with a new building, and Terminal 2, with East and West concourses and the international arrivals facility.
Carriers include Southwest Airlines, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta and United, plus several low-cost and international airlines.
Yes. MTS Route 992 runs between both terminals and downtown San Diego, roughly every 15 minutes for most of the day.
Take the free San Diego Flyer shuttle to Old Town Transit Center, where it connects with the Trolley, COASTER and Amtrak trains.
Rental companies are grouped in a consolidated rental car center, reached by a shuttle from the terminals.

San Diego International Airport (SAN) is the main commercial airport for San Diego, California. Many locals still call it Lindbergh Field, a nod to Charles Lindbergh, whose Spirit of St. Louis was built in the city. The airport was dedicated in 1928 and today works hard on a compact site beside San Diego Bay, with one runway handling every arrival and departure.
Location is the big draw. The airport lies about 3 miles (5 km) northwest of downtown, so the Gaslamp Quarter, Little Italy and the waterfront are often just a 10 to 15 minute drive away, traffic permitting. Planes on approach pass low over the city, which gives window-seat passengers a memorable view.
SAN has two passenger terminals. Terminal 1 has been rebuilt with a new, larger building, while Terminal 2 has East and West concourses plus the facility for international arrivals. Both terminals offer dining, shops, charging points and free Wi-Fi. Check which terminal your airline uses before you set off.
A wide range of US carriers operate here, including Southwest Airlines, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta and United. Domestic routes cover much of the United States, and a smaller set of international services uses Terminal 2. Check the current schedule for routes and seasonal flights.
Balboa Park, with its museums and gardens, is a short ride from the airport. The beaches of Coronado and La Jolla, the historic Old Town and the busy harbour front round out the city's appeal.
Since the airport is so central, leave extra time for road traffic rather than distance. Public transit is a good way to skip parking. Confirm your terminal, as airlines are split between T1 and T2.
