The town stretches as far as 8.5 km from North to South and 5 km from East to West and is located in the north of the western half of Timor Island. Atambua is a multi-ethnic town with most of its citizens from Timor, Rote, Sabu, and Flores with some emigrants from East Timor and China. But in spite of diversity, the citizens could still live in harmony. The town's religion is made up of over 90% of Roman Catholic, 5% of Protestant and a few more of Muslim, Hindu, and Buddha. The town is home to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Atambua. The Diocese's population is over 95% Catholic, among the highest percentages of Catholics in all of Indonesia.

Teluk Gurita of Atambua – Teluk Gurita is located in Kakuluk Mesak District, about 18km from Atambua city to the northwest. This bay became a mini-trade route in those days. It is said that when Japan lost the war and had to lift the foot from Indonesia, a lot of war ammunition drowned in this bay. Kolam Susuk – Kolam Susuk is a pond with water that is white like milk. Indeed, that's how it seems. During the day, when the hot sun bounces into the water in this pool, then the water will be white, like milk. This is what makes the people around Atambua call it, Kolom Susuk. This white colour is a reflection or effect of the spoil that is at the bottom of the pond. The land around this area is white soil, including the ground that is the bottom of the pond. With clear water, when the sun shines on the pond it will be seen directly to the ground at the bottom of the pond. That's what makes the effect, it looks as if this pool turns white into colour. Also, the panorama of the savanna has become a bonus factor that makes this place worth to visit.
Pasir Putih – Coastal attractions you should not miss is Pasir Putih. As the name implies, this place is coastal with white sand stretches. It lies somewhat further than the two previous destinations, about 24km from the town of Atambua. In Pasir Putih is equipped with facilities for bathing and recreation. Every holiday season like now, people must be travelling to this beach. By the surrounding community, this beach is called Sukaerlaran Beach. The white sand stretches up to Motaain Beach. This coastal location is also very close to the border of Indonesia-Timor Leste. Beside bathing, you can take a walk to the border area, called the Motaain land border route.
