The accommodation was a wonderful surprise! The staff (Jefri and his wife) were incredibly kind, helpful, and friendly. Breakfast was served on the shared veranda, which had a spectacular view. Our room was right over the water, and all we had to do was step out onto the veranda to see the turtles. The room was spotlessly clean. The facilities are simple but comfortable, and the location is excellent. You only need to walk to the main street to find everything you need, but once you return to the accommodation, it is wonderfully peaceful and quiet. If I ever return to Derawan, I would definitely stay here again — and I think that says it all! Thank you, Jefri!

More about hotels in Biatan

Biatan: A Gateway to East Kalimantan's Untamed Beauty

For the discerning Filipino traveller seeking an escape beyond the usual Southeast Asian circuit, Biatan in Indonesia presents a compelling proposition. While Indonesia itself is a vast archipelago brimming with diverse cultures and landscapes, Biatan offers a unique window into the raw, natural splendour of East Kalimantan. It’s a destination that rewards those who venture off the beaten path, promising encounters with pristine ecosystems and a slower pace of life that contrasts sharply with the bustling metropolises many are accustomed to. Here, the rhythm of nature dictates the day, offering a refreshing change of pace and a chance to reconnect with the environment.

Biatan is not a monolithic entity; rather, it’s a region composed of distinct areas, each offering a different flavour of Indonesian adventure. From the administrative hub of Tanjung Redeb, which serves as a gateway to the wider Berau Regency, to the world-renowned marine wonders of Maratua and Derawan islands, the choice of where to base yourself profoundly shapes your experience. Exploring these different locales reveals a spectrum of possibilities, from urban conveniences and cultural immersion in Tanjung Redeb to the unparalleled diving and snorkelling opportunities that draw international enthusiasts to the islands.

In terms of value, Biatan positions itself as an attractive option for international travellers. With an average starting price of N/A per night, it offers a significantly more accessible entry point compared to many popular tourist destinations in neighbouring countries. For travellers from the US, Europe, and India, this translates into greater purchasing power, allowing for extended stays, richer culinary explorations, and the ability to indulge in more activities without straining the budget. The cost-effectiveness of Biatan makes it a smart choice for those seeking authentic experiences without the premium price tag.

The accommodation landscape in Biatan mirrors its diverse offerings, ranging from humble homestays to more established hotels. Properties like Kampung Nelayan Karangan and Hotel Biatan Indah represent the spectrum of lodging available, catering to different preferences and budgets. Whether you're looking for a simple, clean room or a more amenity-rich stay, Biatan provides options. For those ready to plan their adventure, exploring these choices and deciding on the perfect place to rest your head is the first step towards an enriching journey. You can easily book hotel accommodations that suit your needs.

Ultimately, Biatan is a destination that appeals to a broad spectrum of international travellers. American adventurers might be drawn to its off-the-grid appeal and opportunities for exploration. European visitors, often seeking cultural depth and natural beauty, will find the region's unique ecosystems and local traditions fascinating. Indian travellers, who frequently seek value and vibrant experiences, will appreciate the affordability and the chance to explore a different facet of Asian culture. While direct connections might be less common for African travellers, the allure of unique natural landscapes and a distinct cultural experience makes Biatan a worthy consideration for those looking to broaden their travel horizons.

Best Areas to Stay in Biatan

Biatan, while a region rather than a single city, offers distinct areas that cater to different travel styles and interests. Understanding these nuances is key to crafting an ideal Indonesian adventure. Whether you prioritize accessibility, proximity to natural wonders, or a more local feel, choosing the right neighbourhood within Biatan will significantly enhance your trip, ensuring you're well-placed to explore the region's diverse attractions and spend time in its unique atmosphere.

Tanjung Redeb

Tanjung Redeb serves as the administrative and commercial heart of the Berau Regency, making it a practical and convenient base for many international travellers. This area offers a more urban Indonesian experience, with a good selection of hotels, restaurants, and local markets. For travellers from the US and Europe, it provides a comfortable introduction to East Kalimantan, offering amenities and services that are familiar while still retaining a distinct local character. It’s an ideal starting point for those who want to acclimatize and arrange onward travel to more remote destinations.

From Tanjung Redeb, you can easily access the gateway to the region's famed islands. The area itself boasts local attractions such as the Sanggam City Park and the historic Masjid Agung Darul Ibadah. For those looking to explore further afield, day trips to nearby natural sites are feasible. Getting to Tanjung Redeb typically involves flying into Kalimarau Airport (BEJ), which is well-connected to major Indonesian cities. From the airport, taxis and ride-hailing services are readily available to take you to your accommodation within the town.

Maratua

Maratua is an island destination renowned globally for its exceptional marine biodiversity and breathtaking coral reefs, making it a prime destination for divers and snorkellers. This area is a world away from the mainland, offering a tranquil escape focused entirely on the ocean. For travellers from Europe and North America who seek unparalleled underwater experiences, Maratua is an absolute must. The vibe here is one of serene seclusion, where the primary activities revolve around exploring the vibrant marine life that inhabits its crystal-clear waters.

Accommodation on Maratua ranges from luxurious resorts to more rustic guesthouses, all designed to complement the natural beauty of the island. Popular activities include diving at world-class sites like the "Big Fish Country," snorkelling with turtles, and simply relaxing on the pristine beaches. While Maratua itself doesn't have a major airport, it is typically accessed via boat transfers from Tanjung Redeb or other nearby islands, forming part of a larger island-hopping itinerary. Planning your book attractions and transfers in advance is highly recommended.

Derawan

Derawan Island is another jewel in the Berau Regency's crown, famous for its laid-back atmosphere and incredible marine encounters, particularly its resident population of green sea turtles. It offers a slightly more accessible island experience than Maratua, with a good range of accommodations and a lively, yet relaxed, community feel. This area is particularly appealing to travellers from India and other parts of Asia who are drawn to the combination of natural beauty and a more communal island living experience. It’s a place where you can easily interact with locals and fellow travellers.

Beyond turtle watching, Derawan offers excellent snorkelling and diving opportunities, with sites like the Derawan Channel providing a glimpse into a rich underwater world. Visitors can also explore nearby islands such as Kakaban, famous for its stingless jellyfish lake, and Sangalaki, a sanctuary for manta rays. Getting to Derawan typically involves a boat trip from Tanjung Redeb, making it a common stop on any island-hopping tour of the Berau region. The journey itself is part of the adventure, offering scenic views of the turquoise waters.

Biatan (Central Area)

While "Biatan" itself can refer to the broader region, there are central areas that act as hubs for local life and offer a more authentic glimpse into daily Indonesian existence away from the main tourist islands. These areas might not have the same level of tourist infrastructure as Tanjung Redeb or the island resorts, but they provide a unique opportunity for cultural immersion. This is ideal for travellers from all backgrounds, particularly those from India and Africa, who are keen to experience local life, sample authentic Indonesian cuisine from local warungs, and engage with the community in a less commercialized setting.

Staying in a more central Biatan area means embracing a simpler way of life. You might find charming homestays or smaller guesthouses that offer a personal touch. Local markets are the heart of these communities, providing fresh produce and local delicacies. While specific attractions might be fewer, the experience of living amongst locals, understanding their routines, and exploring the surrounding natural beauty at a slower pace is the main draw. Access to these areas often involves local transport from Tanjung Redeb, requiring a bit more planning but rewarding travellers with genuine cultural insights.

Tanjung Batu

Tanjung Batu is a coastal town that serves as a crucial transit point for accessing the Derawan Islands, including Maratua and Derawan itself. While it's primarily a functional port town, it offers a different perspective on life in the Berau region, one that is deeply connected to maritime activities and trade. For travellers who appreciate seeing the operational side of a region and enjoy a less polished, more authentic atmosphere, Tanjung Batu can be an interesting place to spend a day or two. It’s particularly suited for adventurous travellers from any background who are not deterred by its utilitarian nature.

The main draw of Tanjung Batu is its role as a gateway. You'll find local eateries serving fresh seafood, small shops, and a bustling harbour where fishing boats and passenger ferries come and go. It’s a place to observe local life unfold, away from the curated experiences of resorts. For those planning to visit Derawan or Maratua, spending a night here can break up the journey and offer a glimpse into the lives of the people who facilitate access to these island paradises. Getting to Tanjung Batu is typically via road from Tanjung Redeb, and from here, boat services to the islands are readily available.

Food & Dining

A Taste of East Kalimantan: Culinary Delights in Biatan

Biatan's culinary landscape is a reflection of its Indonesian heritage, offering a diverse mix of flavours influenced by local ingredients and traditional cooking methods. For international visitors, the region presents an opportunity to explore authentic Indonesian cuisine beyond the more commonly known dishes. Signature dishes often feature fresh seafood, owing to its coastal proximity, alongside aromatic spices and local vegetables. Experiencing these local specialities provides a delicious insight into the culture and daily life of Biatan, making every meal a discovery.

When it comes to dining, Biatan offers a spectrum of choices, from bustling local markets to more established restaurants. Tanjung Redeb, as the regional hub, provides the most diverse dining scene, with numerous warungs (local eateries) and cafes. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal-certified food is generally straightforward, as Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country, and most local establishments adhere to Halal practices. Exploring areas like the local markets in Tanjung Redeb will offer the most authentic and budget-friendly culinary experiences.

The cost of dining in Biatan is notably affordable for international travellers. Street food and meals at local warungs can range from as little as ₱50 to ₱150 (approximately $1 to $3 USD), offering incredible value. Mid-range restaurants might charge between ₱200 to ₱500 (approximately $4 to $10 USD) per person for a full meal. This affordability allows travellers from the US, Europe, and India to indulge in a wide variety of local dishes and explore the culinary scene extensively without significant expense.

Practical dining tips for Biatan include embracing the local meal times, which can be earlier than in some Western countries. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, usually around 5-10%. When ordering, it's helpful to learn a few basic Indonesian phrases, though many vendors in tourist-frequented areas will have some English speakers. Observing local customs, such as eating with your right hand and being mindful of hygiene at street food stalls, will enhance your dining experience.

Local Etiquette & Safety

Navigating Biatan with Respect and Awareness

Understanding local customs is key to a respectful and enjoyable visit to Biatan. Indonesians are generally known for their politeness and hospitality, but certain social norms are important for international visitors to be aware of. For instance, it's customary to greet people with a smile and a polite nod. When visiting homes or more traditional settings, it's polite to remove your shoes before entering. Being mindful of these nuances will foster positive interactions with the local community.

When visiting religious sites or more conservative areas in Biatan, dressing modestly is crucial. This typically means covering your shoulders and knees. Photography is usually permitted, but it's always polite to ask for permission before taking pictures of individuals, especially in more rural or traditional settings. Queue culture is generally relaxed, so patience is often required. Being aware of and respecting these practices ensures that your presence is welcomed and appreciated by the local population.

Safety in Biatan is generally good, especially in tourist-frequented areas. However, like any travel destination, it's wise to take standard precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, particularly in crowded markets or during public transport. For transportation, reputable ride-hailing apps like Grab are available in Tanjung Redeb, offering a convenient and relatively safe way to get around. For island travel, ensure you use licensed boat operators.

In case of emergencies, local police can be contacted via emergency numbers. For Filipino travellers, it's advisable to know the contact details of the Philippine Embassy or Consulate in Indonesia, which can provide assistance in critical situations. While specific tourist police might not be prevalent, general law enforcement is available. Considering travel insurance is also a prudent step for all international visitors, offering peace of mind for any unforeseen medical needs or emergencies.

Travel Guide

Your Essential Guide to Biatan: Flights, Transport, and Best Times to Visit

Reaching Biatan from the Philippines typically involves flights from major hubs like Manila (MNL) or Cebu (CEB), with connections usually made in Jakarta or other Indonesian cities. Direct flights are uncommon, so expect a journey time of around 8-12 hours, depending on layovers. The primary airport serving the region is Kalimarau Airport (BEJ) near Tanjung Redeb. Flight prices can vary significantly, but budget around ₱15,000 to ₱25,000 for a round trip, especially if booked in advance. For seamless travel planning, consider using Traveloka to book flight tickets that suit your schedule and budget.

Navigating within Biatan and its surrounding areas offers several options. In Tanjung Redeb, local taxis and ride-hailing services like Grab are readily available for getting around town and to nearby attractions. For travel between islands like Derawan and Maratua, public ferries and private boat charters are the primary modes of transport. These boat trips offer scenic views of the archipelago. For longer distances or inter-island travel, booking through local tour operators or your accommodation is recommended, ensuring you get reliable services.

The best time to visit Biatan largely depends on your priorities. The dry season, typically from April to October, offers the most pleasant weather with less rainfall, making it ideal for island hopping, diving, and outdoor activities. This period also coincides with peak tourist seasons in many parts of the world, so expect slightly higher prices and more crowds. The wet season, from November to March, sees more rain but can offer lower prices and fewer tourists, appealing to budget-conscious travellers from India and the Philippines.

Before you depart for Biatan, ensure you have a few essentials sorted. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), but having some USD on hand for emergencies or larger purchases is advisable. You can exchange currency at the airport or in Tanjung Redeb. Purchasing a local SIM card at the airport is recommended for easy data access and communication. Essential apps include Google Maps for navigation, a translation app, and ride-hailing apps. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.

Visa Information

Entering Indonesia for Your Biatan Adventure: Visa Requirements

For Philippine passport holders planning to visit Biatan, which is located in Indonesia, understanding the visa requirements is crucial. Fortunately, Indonesian immigration policy generally allows Filipino citizens visa-free entry for short stays, typically up to 30 days, for tourism purposes. This visa exemption simplifies travel planning significantly. It is essential, however, to ensure your passport has at least six months of validity remaining from your date of entry into Indonesia and that you possess proof of onward travel, such as a return flight ticket.

The application process for visa-free entry is straightforward upon arrival at Indonesian international airports. You will typically proceed directly to immigration, where your passport will be stamped with the entry permit. While no visa fee is charged for this exemption, it is always prudent to confirm the latest regulations with the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in the Philippines before your trip, as policies can be subject to change. Any specific requirements, such as proof of sufficient funds for your stay, should also be verified.

While visa-free entry is common, it is imperative for all travellers to verify the most current visa regulations directly with Indonesia's official immigration authorities or the Indonesian Embassy in the Philippines. Immigration policies can be updated without prior notice. Confirming your entry status before booking flights and accommodation is highly recommended to avoid any last-minute complications. This due diligence ensures a smooth and stress-free journey to Biatan and the wider Indonesian archipelago.
